Drill a small hole where they were, then after the decals are on, poke through a small length of shaped plastic through the hole - the aileron horns then line up. Else use photoetch ones and drive yourself insane. I bend down or break of the ailerons and re-glue them. Aftr painting, I measure then cut the decal with a sharp #11 Exacto blade, so it's like doing two separate decals. Put them on at the same time so you can get them into position together. >N.E: Raisin Toast! BTW, I tried some Vegemite at the Nats as we all stood around after the awards ceremony. Karen produced this small sache of it and much to everyone else's apparent alarm (they visibly moved backwards when she produced it), I ate some. It was in one of those little plastic single serving things. It tasted a lot weaker than Marmite and less flavoursome but perhaps that was because it'd been in Dame Karen's purse for a few months! It also had a more grainy & less smooth texture than Marmite. It's OK but I prefer proper Marmite! I also like to eat chocolate ants and frogs covered in aspic. Online color is highly variable. If Matt posts a color chip, each of us will view it differently. Mac's color sync works wonders for matching printer and monitor but 1) most don't have that and 2) it still will only match two output devices, not ensure that the color is accurate. >From a philosophical view, we shouldn't become more concerned about color variation than the people who applied them originally. It's Neil Eddy in Australia who's eating them. Regarding aileron control horns: they are not good eating but I always stick them on last, after everything has been painted and decaled. It's less trouble than trying to slice and get the decal to settle down around it. I've also tried photoetch aileron control horns but they are difficult to line up (perhaps a small hole drilled through would help) and they knock off too easily because you need to use CA, which has poor shearing strength. Which of my 3 computers would you like me to do this on Bob? How would you like to me to set up my monitor when I do it? I'm not sure what your point is except that it must be that you think my comment is incorrect. Methinks you need to play with some non-Macs for a while. This is one of the biggest reasons that Macs still rule the graphics art community as there simply isn't any 'standard'. Macs are the only computers who even address the question. I can change the background color of the msg I'm writing currently from its 'white' to pink or blue without touching the keyboard. While I know that you're careful with color, you can't predict how they will be displayed on a computer monitor. As for mapping specific cmyk values to some other system, there's no problem there but still, without some way of verifying that a particular C value will actually generate a particular cyan intensity (part of what Mac color sync does), you still can't display a cymk combination and say, "That's Methuen X" when looking at a PC monitor. Heck, this is the very problem that causes Pantone values to be used in the publishing world. I spent 3 years listening to artists showing me color cards and telling me "this is what it will REALLY look like" as we were looking at graphics on the screen. You can buy that magazine on any newstand by the way so we're not talking garage operations here. How many here have at least pairs of profiles, published in different places, where the colors vary between profiles? I wanted to review the Rosemont conversion fuselage side-by-side with a "standard" Toko HB D.I (sorry, I can't remember now what "number" the Rosemont is versus the "standard" Toko/EE). However, the Toko/EE kit is so bad (in my opinion) that it has caused me to stumble in a number of places. I'm using the "straight" Toko build to show that acrylics really don't hide their horrid fabric "effect". So, I decided to sand the wings of the Rosemont one, and was in the process of adding decal rib tapes. Then I have to figure out how I'm going to handle the wood fuselage (which is why I like French machines - little to no wood ;-)). Then there's the horrid "gun coffin" for the top of the upper wing. These are horribly molded. Plus all the other Toko mold problems with this kit. Just something I'm no longer thrilled about to finish. However, in wanting to get a number of in-progress kits off my bench, I'm determined to finish them - some year. ;-) Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Aug 2002 12:42:17 -0700 From: "Bob Pearson" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Color Message-ID: <102874935901@smtp-1.vancouver.ipapp.com> >> For anyone who has purchased my CD, try comparing the colours on the cover >> with those on the CD itself .. they should be the same. . at least for the >> computerized profiles. > > Which of my 3 computers would you like me to do this on Bob? Silbergrau used in 1917 is available today as 'Silberbronze'. It's grounded aluminium with nearly no binder. It's still available in german (only?) DIY shops. It's used f.e. for metal exhaust from coal ovens etc. It's head and UV resistant. >From the near it is looking like matt aluminium paint ( Revell / Humbrol), but very fine grounded pigment. The farer away you get the greyer it get or lighter if you are outside. And it changes hue , depending on the surface it is painted on. Look at the Pfalzes. The fuselage often looks lighter ( filled and primed wood) than the wings ( Zapponlack doped). So, if you want to make a factory fresh Pfalz, make it more silvery with less contrast between wings and fuselage. If you wants to make a old bird in a Jasta Schule ( training unit), make it matt and with more contrast ( darker wings/light fuselage). This sure explains why I couldn't understand what you were saying :-) BTW, there is some hardware that will permit color sync on PCs and some of the newer, better monitors have a form of it built into it. None that I've seen match Mac's well-developed system, however. Bob knows that too (grin). It shows the underwing roundels as being blue/white/red, a la the RAF. One of the shots Diego sent me yesterday (from directly underneath) shows it even more clearly... ???? One assumes the museum people had their reasons for applying them. > The USN switched to stars right at the end of the war. The N.28 and > Camel at Pensacola both have stars. That's what I always thought. However... the Skyways article I mentioned yesterday shows the underwing roundels on 5624 (flying from USS Mississippi) as being red/blue/white as usual, the photos are dated August 1919 in the article. Guess I'll go with the markings in the Skyways article. Truth to tell I'd rather have stars but red/blue/white roundels would be OK. In a way, I've already done that as I offered to shoot a whole bunch of kit parts and I did that for all of the Sopwith kits I have that weren't represented. Those eventually got posted but as I never heard anything about that I stopped at Sopwith and didn't do any of the Albatros kits. > EVERYONE! Have a look at the cookups. One thing I didn't understand is that this ISN'T part of the WWI list website. That's the part that I couldn't understand since there are a pile of Albatrii that are in the WWI gallery that aren't part of the cookup. I think mine will remain one of those as having it posted in WWI and a review of it on the Rolls site seems sufficient....maybe more than sufficient :-) Thanks for the explanation, Lorna.
