Online color is highly variable. If Matt posts a color chip, each of us will view it differently. Mac's color sync works wonders for matching printer and monitor but 1) most don't have that and 2) it still will only match two output devices, not ensure that the color is accurate. >From a philosophical view, we shouldn't become more concerned about color variation than the people who applied them originally. I've seen the many reports from Virginia and can add only a couple of items: Matt, the 1/72 biplane winner was ot, a "Pete". The Ansaldo AI Balilla took third, while the strip-down Fokker Dr.I was second. In 1/72 scratch-builds the HD2 was second, while the big prize winner, the DeHavilland 1, took first in this category. With all due respect, I could not see what made that DeHavilland better than Tom's Dh2 or a 1/72 Vindicator, but what do I know? There was a highly placed Salmson 2A2 in 1/72 vacs, and all the other winners have been reported. Eduard says that their 1/48 Camel *may* be available by Christmas, and that their 1/48 W.4 is imminent. Next up for them in 1/48 is definitely the SE5a. While there is always a rush of contributions when a new cookup is launched, they are still more than welcome. Cook-ups are not just a way for the list to have a group building experience, the inspiration and knowledge they engender spread out to many more people. Current cookups are Albatros, Sopwith, AFV BBq and WW1 Giants (and the fastest Nieuport cookup on record ;-) ). To contribute to the cookup all anyone has to do is send their submissions to Shane the Younger or myself. EVERYONE! Have a look at the cookups. There are some gaps that maybe you can fill with a built model, an in-box review or maybe even just a parts scan of a kit we haven't got. Several of us said we would build specific Albatros markings and there would be a single page with kit, corrections, and markings information. It was supposed to be completed by September 2000, IIRC. My three Albatrii were the ones I had said I would do, but as you can see they are just a tetch late. I am not sure, but I would say that there is still room for your model on the Cook-up site, if you would like to have it with other Albatros pictures, but you would have to talk to the site managers. It is an epoxy product which, when cured, taps, drills, sands and accepts fasteners exactly like a finely grained wood. It can be molded like clay prior to curing, shrinks very little, and is generally very light and forgiving. Unfortunately, they only sell them in 20-tube packs of 400 mm long (16 ") tubes. So each pack is more than enough for a looong time. The per-unit price of these tubes is quite reasonable, but not being related to the late Nigerian Leader, I find it prohibitively expensive to purchase their 5-6 of their 20-tube packs. As part of my aforementioned Sopwith Pup, I decided, as a first for me, to 'animate' the model slightly by repositioning the ailerons and tail plane. After careful scribing etc. this was achieved with little drama until... It came time to add the upper wing roundels which gave me a bit of a hard time positioning them correctly, made more difficult by the molded control horns on the ailerons. After much mucking about and slitting the decal in an attempt to settle it on the aileron I got one down. However, one ended up totally ruined (The spares box is a wonderful thing I say!). Looking back on it with 20/20 hindsight, I guess most people would place the decal on the aileron first then reposition it. Is this what most people do? Also, apart from removing them, how does everyone deal with molded control horns and decals? Do we have any more information on the spider? I think that was my favorite. My second had to be the Taube. http://www.njipms.org/Features/IPMS2002nats/Exhibits/Aircraft/image.html?2002nats0467.JPG Later! I add control horns at last, at the same tiem as rigging. I also slice the decals prior to applying while they're still on the carrier sheet. Not all the way thru, just a cut where I want them to be separated. Later I position them carefully on the wing. Being "au naturel" can be adequate to join Ernest and run thru his collection of kits." _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Aug 2002 16:48:13 +0000 From: "Brent Theobald" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Blue Max DH4 Message-ID: Howdy Tom, >Can anyone comment on the Aeroclub RE8 which is a much earlier product? I have an Re-8 awaiting airbrushing. It's a good kit. I found the white metal cockpit parts to be inelegant. If I were to do it again I would scratchbuild some of these parts to be finer and more "to scale". It's not a bad kit, just be prepared for more work than some of the latest Eduard kits. Good luck!
