Message-ID: I am afraid this is a repeat post, since it didn't seem to show up the first time. If I've bored you all to death already, I apologise. As I understand it, camo works on two levels. The first and most obvious is that you produce a colour which blends into the background and is thus difficult to differentiate. Easy, as long as you only fly over one colour of landscape. The second level depends on some understanding of how the eye/brain works. The eye produces a "raw" image, and the visual cortex in the brain processes it to make sense. Part of that processing involves comparing the signal from the eye with a library of known (and EXPECTED) images. This allows the brain to cut corners and make sense of the image faster. This is an essential tool in the evolution of man, when spotting big beasts in the undergrowth was a real danger, and a millisecond gained in reacting could mean the difference between escape and being lunch. Hence, if you present the eye and brain with an image which is totally out of context, it is automatically rejected, and ignored, and not seen (at least, to a degree). If it IS seen, it is seen with less emphasis. This is the principle on which splinter camo works, where you are expecting to see an image of two greys with a dividing line half way up. You are equally expecting to see any ship as a dull grey mass. So when you are on watch, three hours in, scanning through your binoculars, bored out of your mind, you are letting the "auto" part of your brain do the image processing. As you scan across the horizon, an image of startling black and white and grey splinters momentarily passes your field of view. Your brain is on "auto", it rejects the image, you don't see a battleship... at least that is the principle. To return to pink, it fills the bill in BOTH respects, since on SOME occasions it will closely match the dawn or dusk sky and therefore blend in, and on other occasions, it will be so outrageously strange against a background of, say, foliage, that the "auto" part of the brain will reject the image. There, did I get the job, sir? Message-ID: <3D464A30.8D4C96EA@dial.pipex.com> The latest issue of Scale Aviation Modeller International (R Franks, editor) to hit the streets here in the UK (Vol 8/8, August 2002) has a couple of OT articles. One by Nicholas Wigman on the 1/48th Eduard Albatros DII and one on building the 1/72 Choroszy LVG CV and Ardpol DFW CV as post WWI Polish aircraft marked (here's the Diego bit) 'Wanda' , this latter by Wojciech Butrycz Some nice models, the clear fabric on the DFW in particular is nicely done (using preshading to show the wing ribs, one of the few realistic uses for this technique IMHO). Nicholas Wigman's DII has a nice wood effect, but he is thrown by the instruction's 3 colour wings, and opts for traditional 'single green' finish. Other OT news is the release schedule from Roden, including a catalog number for the 1/72 SE5a (#023), due in December apparently (although still not on their website last time I looked). Others are: July 1/72 Albatros DIII Oeffag s.53 (#022) and s.153 (Late) (#030) August 1/72 Albatros DIII Oeffag s.153 (Early) (#024) and s.253 (#026) 1/48 Sopwith Strutter 2-seat Fighter (#402) and Single seat bomber (#404) October 1/72 Albatros W4 Early (#028) December 1/72 RAF SE5a 1/48 Sopwith Strutter Comic Fighter (#407) and Two Seat Trainer (#411) Dave F ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 2 *******************
