You might check with Aeroplane Books in Williamsburg, VA for 2nd hand

But I don't see Windsocks going up for resale very often.

Hi Brian-
Photo copies would be just fine. I'll still search

Alright! My copy of the Dorme and Guiguet book showed up today.
Sweet.
I'll be digesting this for quite a long time.
And yes, you do learn something new every day! Did you know
there were two "versions" of Nieuport 17s? He labels them as
"early" and "late", but they can be easily distinguished by the
panel on the forward starboard side of the nose. The "early" one
was more rectangular, while the later one was "circular". Cool!
G! Something to tell Mr. Choroszy of.
Man...it'll be forever until I put this one down...
If you like French aircraft, especially Nieuports, you *need*

Been right here. Unfortunately, the carpet gremlins have been disturbed
by all the chaos of remodeling and they summoned their relatives, the
phone gnomes, who promptly put the whammy on my phone line last Friday
and I just managed to beat them off a few hours ago.
In the meantime, about half of the "Summer Sale" purchases have been

Nice to be back--was beginning to have 'list withdrawal' symptoms.

AFAIK, Jane has never been featured in any publication printed on paper. But
my library is not very large.....
If it was, however, the rear fuselage colours have to be checked carefully.
For example, they are in the wrong sequence on the decal sheet of Joystick's
Ni.27 vac kit.
In my opinion, the correct sequence should be: green-white-red (green
leading), for both the rear part of the fuselage and the fin/rudder complex.
The basic colour scheme should be aluminium, with, possibly, light wood or
CDL front fuselage side panels (the latter were of wood of course, but
usually they were also fabric covered, at least AFAIK....).
Wings MAY have carried the 5-colour French camouflage scheme.
The only picture I have of this machine shows a much worn aircraft.
Comments welcome !
All the very best,
Alberto Casirati

Very good advice, but I reckon this "unmentionable" as just a
small project, hardly worth doing as sub-assemblies. The modellers
block attack isnt so bad, all I need is a good bout of rainy weather.

Ah, that makes sense, so I was asleep when I read that, do any of you
also go to sleep when reading aviation mags? It drives me nuts,
I'm doing something I enjoy, and before I know what I've dozed off.
I only do it when I'm enjoying myself, I don't mind when it's football,
and I remember with pleasure sleeping through cricket matches when I
lived in England, I like cricket but it does send one to sleep,
but going to sleep reading Windsock seems rather unfair.

So it was: a very cold night, my last night having 32 years old, and I was
putting the last details on my 1/72 nieuport 28. I was so glad to finish
this little insect, that I accompanied each detail glued to the model with a
drink of a comforting beverage. I remember that I heard the last bell of the
clock announcing the midnight when I completely finished the model and put
it under the light of my workbench to check alignment, rigging,
undercarriage... all seemed perfect. I was so concentrated that I fell
asleep looking at it.
Maybe it was the cold room? Maybe it was an unknown effect of the drinks? I
awoke suddenly and to my utter surprise I was lying over the workbench, but
not crushing the model or pushing the tools over the edge of the table, but
ALL over the table!!! Mein Gott, I was scale reduced to 1/72!!!
Cursing Matt, I stood up over the debris that always cover my workbench and
thought what to do next. There was little to do but await until morning and
yell for help. In any case, I got some hours to kill so I walked up to my
model, wich by relative comparison now was blown up to 1:1. I found a lor of
rough spots and some glue runs, specially under the tail, but I was quite
satisfied. I hand-turned the propeller and it spun a bit stiff, but that was
OK. I climbed into the cockpit, found a spot where I forgot to paint, tried
the control column and in a whim, I switched on the magnetos and pushed the
throttle...

.... Surprisingly, the engine started! First with a cough and a bang, and
then, as one of those old Singer sewing machines it started to catch rythm,
until the sound became a roar! I was quite shocked to see that the model
started to gain speed and that was about to crash into my toolbox. Full
rudder to get the box out of the way, but then I headed to the table´s edge,
a free fall of almost one meter high! The plane jumped over the edge and
plunged into the darkness, I was sure that the carpet gnomes this time will
feast on my corpse, but as the fall increased the airspeed, I was able to
pull back the joystick and recover the aircraft just before crashing into
the synthetic "cigar" wool carpeting. It was a near call!
I climbed and banked to avoid the chairs, flew by the bookshelves big as
cliffs, and strafed the shelf where the rest of my assembled models are
displayed, waving my wings in a joyride. As I was about to return to the
workbench and land, I saw the Pegasus Albatros D.II coughing blue smoke from
its exhaust, and rolling on the shelf, taking off in my pursuit. Damn, I was
careless to fly over a bunch of german models with a Nieuport all covered in
cockades!

Off we went, myself on my Nieuport 28 and a ghost Albatros D.II searching
the tail of my plane to shoot me! I rolled and looped, and the albatros was
always back there, spitting flames. bl**dy hun!
I got by the window of the room and lo and behold I saw that it was a small
opening below, and if I was careful, I could get out of there. I lined up,
against the turbulence that entered by the window opening (it has almost a
gale force when you're 1/72 the normal size) and zoomed off the room and
into the night. Against my wishes, the Albatros did not crash against the
windows, but followed me swiftly. Gee I wished I built an Albatros D.I with
a taller wing gap!
I climbed and climbed and saw that I was not alone. In fact there were lots
of airplanes out there, wings faintly shining inthe moonlight!

How it's possible that all these models are flying all mingled up? I need to
see this, I said to myself, and climbed up to the meleé.
A Spad 12 zoomed near... It was Neil's! At least this one must be friendly,
I reasoned. Who else would be there? A Vickers FB 19? Who else would build
this rare bird but Steve Cox? There was also a few red triplanes, but the
shiniest one was Marcio's, without any doubt. Bill Arnold's Albatros D.II
joined my nemesis in formation. Well, I just looked for Matt's and Alberto's
Nieuports to be safe. There was a career Pup, with Plesha signature, a
bewithched Fokker D.VII with orange nose and tail, Neil's aussie SE5a,
Volker's Junkers, Sanjeev's Fee, Martin Afflito on a black-cowled sopwith
tripe, Michael K. looping his strutter, Ken's version of Vieux Charles, Dale
on his own heart-decorated Spad VII, Peter Leonard on a scary looking
Farman, followed by Pedro in his start strutter... and many more! So many
airplanes, all so garish that not even the night darkness could hide the
wild schemes, the arrows, skulls, checkers crosses and cockades. We danced
the skies on decal-silvered wings, high in the moonlit silence. Hov'ring
there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager model through
footless halls of air.
But the cold was strong and I headed back home, where the light was still
bright on my window. I slipped thru the window opening again, and cut the
engine to land over the workbench but....

Hello! There was again my enemy Albatros right behind, streaming bullets all
over my nieuport! The bullets cut cleanly two or three rigging wires on the
wings and I fought to keep control of the aircraft, wich started to suffer
strong buffeting in the airstream. I side-slip and the workbench surface got
closer and closer, the albatros kept firing and I tried to yank the controls
to stabilize the craft before crash landing on the tool cluttered table. I
bounced on it, a wingtip touched a Windsock mag spreaded there shedding an
aileron, bounced again over a needle file and then the nieuport turned
upside down and knocked me off unconscious.
I woke up with a nasty headache. I was still on my chair, an empty bottle of
port over the workbench and a mess of modelling tools all around me. With
some disgust, I saw that while I was asleep I pushed my newly finished
nieuport 28 with my elbows and turned it upside down, unglued an aileron
loose and damaged the rigging. What a way to satrt a birthday!
I walked to the bathroom to wash my face with cold water (what a headache I
had!) and then I saw my face in the mirror... It was all smeared in castor
oil and I had a nice bump in my forehead, just in the shape of a Nieuport
windshield....

A classic discussion, I can't make up my mind, the first Pegasus kits
were truly awful. The latest are very good, in parts. The Spad 12 is
typical, its the only game in town, but fit is poor, wing surfaces uninspired,
yet the fuselage has mouldings that should make Tamiya envious, nice decals,
and terrific white metal parts. I'm glad I've built a Pegasus, but I'm
in no hurry to do another one.

Michael,
I have this one and I like it a lot! Many pictures, the usual 1/72 and 1/48
plans and so on. However, since I don't suffer from AMS, I can't say exactly
if it's a good tool for experienced modelers. For me it's amazing...
All the best from Brazil

Oggetto: [WWI] A birthday dream, part 2
Damn, I was
careless to fly over a bunch of german models with a Nieuport all covered in
cockades!

In every copy of Skyways (and probably WW1 Aero) there is an
advertisment for Frank van Dalems (IIRC) PC program that does this.
I don't know how well it works, probably not because it doesn't
seem to be an outstanding success. Last I heard they were trying
to get somebody to rewrite it for windows.

There is nothing on the AEG in Volume 5 at all; 4/1 has shots of the
Ottawa survivor, and is the one you want.

The book is in the usual format of the Specials, with 20 pages of scale
drawings, 4 pages of profiles, 68 archive photos, and 19 detail/closeups
and cockpit drawings.
The many detail shots make this the sine qua non of Gotha references,
IMHO.

I'm sold. I'll pick one up from Aeroplane Books at the Nats. By the way,
Aeroplane Books' store is within striking distance of Virginia Beach - close
to Williamsburg.
