Message-ID: <3CFD09D1.CDAA5018@rogers.com> Given the number of altimeters that have survived I'd suspect they were quite common while airspeed indicators seem to be a rarity. An average pilot would know if he was too slow or too fast - but if the weather deteriorated an altimeter and compass would be almost essential. Some pilots still had the pre-war superstitions about compasses spinning by themselves (pilots getting into spins in clouds not believing what the compass was saying etc) so they were somewhat optional. A watch was a common fitting and the pilots had to be careful to remove them when they left the aircraft or it would disappear - being a quality government issue item much in demand. Even in 1/48th it would be hard to tell any of them apart (aside from the compass) and I can't recall seeing anything that looking obviously like a watch (maybe someone else has?) so it probably had an even more buckshee mounting than the other instruments. Tachometers were extensively used as many rotaries would be brought up to the desired rpm and then the mixture set - but an experienced pilot should eventually have been able to do that from the engine sound. The pulsator is on the left in the N.11 just ahead of the throttle and mixture controls and looks like a glass tube from an old tv. Some had a map spread over the middle but it is impossible to tell how they were attached - possibly with clamps? The dials were usually grouped to either the left or the right, or a few on each side, but there were exceptions (1 RNAS machine had three dials across the middle, mounted ahead of the bar and as high as possible and an Italian machine (A on fuselage) had a single instrument visible in the middle. I have yet to find an 11 with an obvious panel though some N.16's did had them. I saw two types of these devices. One is like a box with two knobs to "roll" the map, but there was one simpler that was a simple glass (or celluloid) cover attached with hooks to a small wooden plank and the map folded and sandwiched inside. I also saw a smal leather pouch with a transparent cover to be hung or tied to the pilot clothes, but I don't know if that was usual. So what does the list think of this kit? The lozenge looks a bit odd? That Siemens Schuckert is one heck of a nice looking plane. /Neil C. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2002 11:32:32 +0200 From: "Grzegorz Mazurowski" To: Subject: re: Modeling Boyfriend was Part 4 Saga of the Missing B.M. The lozenge looks a bit odd? >That Siemens Schuckert is one heck of a nice looking plane. I'm in the middle of building it. I am attempting to incorporate the Part photoetch and the Hawkeye resin "improvement" to do a mid/late model (no headrest) D.III. Here's my view of the kit and the other stuff so far. 1. The kit itself is fine but there are a couple of issues. One is the engine being a little under-detailed - the Hawkeye things solves that. 2. The top wing is a little small - the Hawkeye thing should've solved that but mine was warped (so was the one bought by one of the French gents on the list), so I'm dubious. The spinner and horizontal tail bits in the Hawkeye thing are definitely good though. 3. The kit's lozenge decals are way past dodgy - get yourself some A/G 5-colour or Eagle Strike if A/G are not available. 4. The Part p/e has some nice stuff. I don't have the skill to use some of it though; e.g. they give a replacement for the underside louvre openings butyou have to cut away the kit's ones - good luck! There's a lot of excellent interior stuff on the Part p/e that I'll defintely use though. If I were prioritizing about which things really needed fxing from the kit, I would just replace the decals - if you want to add details, you could probably do that without aftermarket, although some of the bits on the Part p/e are really convenient to have.
