This will work as long as you do nit burnish the with anything harder than a soft cloth. Any place where you have to apply a lot of pressure with a hard object will polish the foil to a high gloss. JP I like applying the adhesive to the matte side, because the glue spreads more evenly and smoothly on it. Little risk of puddling, etc., which is a perennial problem on the shiny side. The matte side, if you've noticed, is quite delicate under handling. It scratches easily, revealing shiny stuff underneath. Once this has happened to a piece, you have to scour all the rest of the matte off to balance it out. I really can't see much practical use for the shiny stuff as is unless you're doing rear view mirrors or oleo struts, so it really doesn't matter which side you lay face down. Whatever you're working with you'll be extensively reworking anyway, so... chaque a son gout, as Fonck would have put it ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 07:11:18 -0300 From: "Diego Fernetti" To: Subject: RE: New Models Message-ID: <008e01c20bb0$2b46b900$4640a8c0@ssp.salud.rosario.gov.ar> Now that they're on the Gallery, I see my models more and more critically. Message-ID: Bill asks: "How many gauges in a Nieuport 11?" And since I'm unexpectedly at work instead of on the road, I'll assay an answer. I do not believe one can be too dogmatic about any of the various gauges in any early plane, as it was a simple matter to clip additional ones to the airframe, or construct a board in which to mount them. For what it's worth, I believe almost any plane would carry a rev counter or tachometer, and any rotary-engined plane would have an oil pulsometer. After that, anything else can be considered optional, including a compass. When researching the N.17, I discovered a number of photos of different Nieuports of various marks, and almost all of them varied considerably. I ended up adding an altimeter and an airspeed indicator. These I attached to the longerons and other framing members, and did not build an instrument panel. I also included a floor-mounted compass. As far as a N.11 is concerned, even more latitude is permissable, IMHO, so you can use what Eduard provided or follow Ira's dicta. No fuzz with glueing! The glue on this foil works perfect and is lasting now for years. I used it first time around 5 years ago and the foil is still there where it has to be. Usually I am using standard high gloss chrome foil. I am toning it down with steel whool ( several grades; availably at woodworker's store) when the foil is still on the backing sheet. I have semi-matt foils also, but I am not fully convinced.
