Me too. Funny how you are not supposed to remember much pre infant school. I do though remember my grandmother used to take me on endless walks - when I guess I was 4 or so - which usually ended up passing the local timber merchant's ship - which stocked Airfix, Eagle, Lincoln, Frog and some other goodies. I was born in 1953 so this was just when Airfix was starting to blossom. There was a peg board in the window on which were always hung the latest Airfix releases. I remember all the old cars and galleons and then out came the Walrus, Mosquito, Bf110 etc etc. I used to spend my pocketmoney on anything and everything - a village church?, a hovercraft?, Henry VIII? - yeh lets have it. My first double-winger was a Gladiator - I filled the whole clear cockpit with glue and then watched as it dissolved and ran down the fuselage sides! I remember getting the Albatros (lovely pale blue plastic), Camel, F2b etc, but the one that killed me was the RE8. I just could not get that top wing to stay in place with all the spindly struts and glue and two shaking hands and watch "Champion the Wonder Horse" or "The Lone Ranger" at the same time. It fell off so many times - and finally looked racier as a monoplane anyway. I remember even then having a preference for WWI and when the local newsagent started hanging Aurora kits (in bags in the UK) in their window - with coloured plastic and black guns, wheels and engines - and ground crew and that neat little circular nameplate I was absolutely hooked. I still got lots of Airfix, Revell, Frog 1/72 stuff, but a new Aurora quarter-scalar was always a major event. I've heard many (RR for example) say that the Pfalz was a rarity in Britain. In Scotland this was not the case. We obviously got the whole UK allotment of these beauties and I built dozens of 'em. Only ever found one SPAD and one Nie28 though! That's what started my preference for 1/48 and its stayed ever since. Thank you Aurora! My earliest memory of styrene was taking a nap on the living room sofa and waking up after dark and my dad was building this set of little airplanes, and he had some bright colors glossy paint. I still remember they were Lindberg kits with little cellophane windos in the back of the box. I know one of them was a Thunder/*-t. A few years later he got into HO trains for me to play with, trouble is the early trains made so much electronic noise that it ruined the tv picture so I coun't run the train while my parents were watching Disney. A coworker of dad's also ran trains. We went over to "Uncle Jim's " and there on neat shelve arranged in the corner of his basement was the biggest most complete NEAT set of model airplanes I'de ever seen. Mostly OT Aurora, but my favorite was a Curtis Condor on floats, had the sleekness of the DC 3 and two wings. My first kit was a Hawk Gee Bee racer. I remember leaving off the prop so it looked more like a fat little jet. I think my firs OT kit was the dark metalic red Aurora Dr-I, imitating Uncle Jim and not dad. I know I had over 100 built models by the time I graduated from High school in 1973. I really didn't appreciate OT things untill after I had Aero Engineering degree in 1977. My first job was as a liason engineer in the depot overhauling C/CK-135s, first the shock of working on airplanes that were just a little younger than me (KC, now EC-135 S/N55-3118 first flew in 1956, an it's still flying right here out of Tinker AFB). The second shock was being Boeing ized with respect to structures, design for the load add 2% for the aircrew, 2% for his wife, and 5% for his kid. I became fasinated in the frail structures that enabled the OT aircraft to do thier mission. 78-81 were my golden OT year. This is when K&B was producing the last of the cleaned up Aurora molds. I had learned hou to use an airbrush, I under stood the goal of replicating enough to look like a real aircraft in a photograph, I could still see details, and I was building. Then I got heavy into r/c and swapped my first generation OT kits to a guy for a radio and some kits and went flying. 82-83 I worked part time in a hobby shop. The owner sold to emloyees at 10% above cost, I had to remember to bring $10 home in cash, the rest came home in models. by 83 I had over 1400 kits. Then I sold all of them, except the OT stuff for some reason to a guy in Airizona. Three marriages and six houses later I was backup to over 600 kits and started selling off the 1/72 OT stuff that I could no longer see on eBay, Then once it was all gone THEN I discovered you tallented wizzerds in plastic and paint on the web. And now I'm having cash flow problems, and am going to whille the stash once again to under 200 kits total so look for an offer of a few OT and bunches of ot kits from me in a few days Thanks to whomever started this thread, it has been fun reminising with you all.
