I, for one, enjoyed his breadth of knowledge, particularly in regard to British aircraft. There is no doubt he will be sadly missed by all with an interest in World War One Aviation. On a further sad note, Jack Lockett of Ballarat (Vic) passed away yesterday aged 109. Jack was one of the few Western Front survivors left in Australia (if not the last). Jack fought through most of the major battles involving Australians on the Western Front. Having met and talked with Jack about this time two years ago , his wit, courage and insight into the war was an inspiration. Time did what the Germans and the Generals could never do. Not true, I'm afraid. We suffer from a phenomenon called Diffraction Limiting. This means that when your aperture drops below a certain physical diameter, the diffraction causes a LOSS of definition, even although the Depth of Field is still increasing. This is one of the problems with digital cameras, in that they have very small formats, short focal lengths, and consequently physically small apertures. Many stop at f8, because going any smaller would destroy the definition. Some cameras, ie Minolta Dimage 7, gives macro at the long end of the zoom. Longer focal length equals bigger aperture diameter for the same f number equals less diffraction. If you go to the other extreme, 10x8" cameras use lenses of typically 240mm focal length. With these, f64 will still give a reasonably large physical diameter of aperture, and thus no diffraction effects. On 35mm, at a typical focal length macro lens, the highest definition will be at around f4 - f5.6, and stopping down will give MORE depth of field but LESS definition. Sorry to be pedantic, but hope this clarifies things, rather than obfuscates. The silly putty I know is a slightly plastic material that stretches and snapps and bounces like a hard rubber ball. I would'nt use it as a mould as it doesn't hold it's shape (it returns to a liquid form, but a very slow moving one - if you make a ball and leave it overnight, you get a round 'pool' of putty) What I use for moulds is Play-Doh modelling clay - stable, copies good detail and doesn't react with resin - I use blue tack for lots of other things, including masking. I just got an e-mail from them that said they are having major problems with their computer. I would suggest e-mailing them to make sure they got it. It is very unusual to not receive a response from them within 24 hours so something may have happened. HTH --------Bob ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 4438 **********************
