I have to admit that I've never used any oil paint on my models, but I used diluted watercolur in Future (Glo-Cot in my case) liquid floorwax and I'd rather have a very thin, transparent wash rather than a thicker, more opaque version. Maybe it's because I work in small scale and too much can make panel lines stand too much, or maybe because if I get short on the amount of weathering, there's always another chance to add a new layer of tinted "varnish". In fact that's the way I built up the dark ply colour on the Albatros D.II and the propeller on the Taube. Neil, I use oil washes a lot and I don't "take them off" as such. I use two types of washes, a very thin wash for an all over wash to pick out detail such as rib tapes and other surcace features, and a thicker wash that is flowed into panel lines (such as ailerons or engine panels). For the former, the paint is very heavily thinned. I generally use burnt umber and a lot of turpentine so that the turps has a "hint" of colour. This is then liberally washed over the whole model with a large soft brush (I use the cheap ones they sell in hobby stores, great for this). No need to "take it off" - the paint is so highly thinnned it is only really noticeable where it gathers around rib tapes and other details. The rest dries quickly as the turps evaporates with no real noticeable colour, although it tones down CDL nicely. For engine panel lines, ailerons etc I use a mix of lamp black and burnt umber thinned about 50/50 with turps. I then paint this as close to the panel lines as I can get with a well pointed sable brush. I then get a clean pointed sable brush with clean turps and "refine" the panel lines by "painting" the oils into the panel line. If it's an engine cover, any oils that don't flow into the panel lines I paint into random oil streaks, again using a brush loaded with clean turps so you are thinning and wiping off at the same time. Hope that makes sense. >Also I'm using a ratio of paint to pure turpentine which gives a thin wash - >is thinner better than thicker? See above - for a general wash, very heavily thinned, for panel lines, about 50/50. I'm just about to submit pics of MvR's Albatros DV where I've used this technique. It came out quite nicely, if a little bit overdone (Mr Verlinden must have tapped me on the shoulder....). However - I've been unable to answer a couple of people off-line in the last week because I was away and without email access using my own PC. Sorry, I'll get back to you when I have a moment. Which may not be soon. I'm moving house starting tomorrow and will be pretty busy and short of time this week even for critically important tasks like goofing off from work reading the archives. I'll be sorry to leave the old place despite the snakes, but the new one has a huge covered entertaining area beside the pool, just ideal for entertaining visiting WW1 listees ;-) Sorry about having to move all these finished models though - usually that's a sign I should cull the oldest ones ! Sorrier still to let the cheese and kisses see the number of packing cartons my unfinished models fill :-( ON Topic.... I'm just about finished an Eduard Pfalz D.III built OoB for a client between burst of work on *another kit*. I'd been told by several local modellers that the lower wing didn't fit worth s**t but in fact it fit without a single gap. I still used a smidge of milliput to smooth the transition between fuselage and root fairing and another to properly fair the tailfin into the fuselage, but the Pfalzie practically clicked together despite being a "mid production" Eduard rather than the newest immaculate kits. Photos......maybe, in a week or three. Happy modelling folks! Wet and thinner. The beauty with oils is that you can build them up. If you think it's coming out too thin, wait until it dries, then add another wash. Or just go over it again with a thicker formula. Plus, if you keep the oil paint too "thick" and too "dry", then removing the oil becomes more difficult later. What do I mean by "removing it"? For example, when I put a wash over wing ribs, I just brush the paint over the entire surface. After it has dried for awhile, I then - very lightly - take an eye make-up applicator and rub it over the ribs. Very lightly. This will give the effect of the ribs appearing "lighter" than the surrounding surface. Then again, IHMO, FWIW and YMMV... Current pricing at $38 and $ 35 Australian, or about $18.65 and I have several kits on the way from NKR but I didn't see them as a good source for Eduard. Maybe things change but right now they list no 1/72 Eduard and only 2 1/48 WWI kits. > No connection to NKR other than as a very satisfied customer. This seems to be a unanimous opinion. After my embarrassing attempt to join myself with a 1/72 Fokker DVII, I thought I need to 'get back on the horse' and redeem myself. I've spent the last couple of evenings staying up late while doing the interior on an Eduard 1/48 Roland CII. Nothing special here as I'm just doing it OOB but I've enjoyed painting the parts and they're now all in place and the fuselage is closed up. I also had a most wonderful time meeting Daniel Munoz, our resident metal-worker and his buddies, who form the Societe de Modelisme de Quebec. What a great bunch of guys...even if they do build WWII tanks :-) BTW, Daniel's talent has very much been understated here. He showed me deck cannons, artillery shells, and even small goblets and drinking glasses that he's made. The stuff is magnificent. Don't let him know I said this, though, as it'll go to his head :-) > I know a lot of Listees use this method for panel work and weathering, so > what do people think? - "wet vs dry" and "thinner vs thicker". I'd love to hear opinions but I have none myself. I've added a coat of Model Master Acryl -flat white - to help point out some of the imperfections that still need to be corrected.
