Message-ID: <005801c1fa18$56372c20$7bd3e2c8@computador> Hello! As the message subject says, yes, 425/17 is ready! But the way to heaven was not free from small disasters. First, you must remember I told you weeks ago that the contact surface between the Rosepart Spandaus and the fuselage was so small that I wouldn't dare to touch the machine guns again. So, while I was trying to attach the right cabane strut... well, you can guess, it touched the right Spandau and, alas, I had to glue it again (this time with a top wing to help visualizing the job :-D). OK, done, but if you look carefully you'll see the traces of superglue. Then I attached the maligned strut. Last step was landing gear. The whole thing was ready and I just had to glue it to the fuselage. No big deal, but, hm, the alignment isn't 100% perfect (this observation applies for the entire plane). I think it's a combination, 30% lack of skill and 70% kit problem :-) Then (np 4 first notes of Beethoven's 5th Symphony) rigging. Got a piece of the Revell Sukhoi S-37 black sprue and made the fire thing. My mother looked at what I was doing and was pleased to help :-) With 60 cm of streched black sprue in hand, I started cutting it and making "attempt-and-error" experiences to get the right measures. First the landing gear rigging, then the cabane strut rigging (no, I didn't rig tail and top wing). For a first experience, quite good, I hope. But if the Baron had to shoot at an enemy with my model, he'd hit one of the wires, I think... :-) Sure, I took pictures. Hope to get them tomorrow, scan them and post them in my website, as well as sending them to the Gallery. See you all tomorrow, when I'll be back to work! :-) All the best from Brazil Marcio Campos Still trying to understand what happened today in Zeltweg ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 13:17:28 +1000 From: "NEIL EDDY" To: Subject: Re: rank question Message-ID: <003101c1fa2c$b69afc40$cad932d2@default> Michael; For the British Army of 1914-1918 the following was generally true: A section under a Lance Corporal (~ 15) A Platoon under a Subaltern (~ 60) A Company under a Captain (~ 250) A Battalion under a Major (~ 1,000) A Regiment under a Colonel (~ 2,000) A Brigade under a Brigadier (~ 4,000) A Division under a Major General ( ~ 12,000) A Corps under a Lieutenant General (~ 50,000) An Army under a General (~ 200,000) All figures were usually less than this due to casualties, leave, training courses, sickness, however. Errr, yes, I did have some problems. One cabane strut was too long, by about one rub on a sheet of 400 grit wet&dry. Only, I rubbed it on 320 grit and made it the same amount too short. Frankly, that problem was all my own. However.....I am mildly suspicious that the undercarriage legs are too long by a couple of mm. simply because the model looks to be standing tippy toes. NO evidence ! It may just be my 1/48 sensibilities struggling with 1/72 appearance, and in any case the model went together so sweetly that I'd forgive such a trifle in an instant even if it was proven inaccurate. Had a rejuvenating Saturday at the Pittsburgh PA IPMS 'Un-Con 2002'. There actually is a small gaggle of WWI modelers here in the tri-state area and most of them made it to the show and brought models with them. My old friend and list lurker Bruce Simard was there, and we met and bonded with Bill Arnold, another lurker who would be more active if he could figure out how to turn off his AOL HTML. As has been said by many others, listees meeting for the first time are like old war buddies; our common interests open all sorts of paths of conversation. Could almost smell the castor oil... The organization of the show is a bit different from most IPMS shows in that there were only about 10 broad categories like '1/48 airplanes', '1/35 military vehicles', 'dioramas', etc. Instead of only a first, second, and third prize in a multitude of classes, they awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals for modeling excellence; so the competition is against modeling standards instead of other models. Interesting approach, but labor-intensive for judging. Anyhoo, both Bruce and Bill went home with medals: Bruce for a sweet little 1/72 Phoenix D.I and Bill for an armload of ot airplanes as well as a very nice 1/72 Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter. My "Hun in the Sun" diorama captured a gold medal and the wz.34 Polish armored car rated a silver. I really have to devote more time to getting biplanes finished instead of Polish tanks. All of us helped the local economy at the vendors' tables; and I was gifted with an Americal sheet of early German crosses by another friend who won it in the raffle. Other WWI models included two 1/48 Eduard Rolands, a 1/32 Nieuport 16, an Airfix British Mk.I tank, and a German battleship. Apologies if I missed some, as I was distracted by the camaraderie... This is always a good show with a sizeable contingent of OT models; Bruce and I have faced off with biplanes at 72 yards several times in the past and plan to do so again in the future. Compliments to the Pittsburgh club for another successful gathering. After the show, I went up the street to Borders Bookstore, but that's another story...
