There are two pretty darn good books out on WWI heavy ordnance, one by Ian Hogg on Allied material and the other by a gentleman named Jager on German material...but sadly there is just a tremendous amount of stuff that is hinted at in publications like this ancient softbound book that I took the Russian material from. Just like the aviation side of things, as time goes by more stuff is dug out but obiously there is a very long way to go...for instance...the Big Bertha is one of the best known pieces of Central Powers weaponry but just try to find anything other then a very small handful of pictures...particularly from a scratchbuilders viewpoint of wanting to construct a model...anyway, we'll keep looking and thanks Grzegorz for the heads up!!!....Bob Horton ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 22:09:13 -0400 From: CoolSpadLuke@aol.com To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: applying CA wasRE: Joint life: was... back to the b Message-ID: <5A2AC178.15E40D39.138E644A@aol.com> Right mind or not (that has always been questionable), I used the spray nozzle when doing balsa kits without too many problems. As others have said, CA glue is harder than plastic once it sets, and therefore more difficult to sand and shape. However, the kickers, while *not* fully curing the CA, will dry it out enough to be workable. My routine is to apply, "kick," and immediately pick up the sanding stick. I find the CA is softer than the surrounding plastic and can easily be sanded out to a feathered edge. Because it's not under stress, I don't care that the area is more weakly glued than would be the case without the accelerant. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 22:47:40 -0400 From: CoolSpadLuke@aol.com To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: I hate tall bottles! This works for a while until the second application. A Here's a couple solutions to bottle tipping: 1) if you have a kid, swipe some of their Legos and build a box for the bottle to sit in (I use this regularly as I also use Legos for simple jigs where I need to square things) 2) Get a hunk of blue foam and hack a hole in it large enough to hold the bottle. Don't use this technique to hold bottles of stuff that melts foam. Don't ask how I know. 3) Get a chunk of modeling clay, roll it into a thick snake and wrap it around the bottom of the bottle. > wayward edge of ply decal needed to be pressed down, so holding the > part between thumb & forefinger and the open bottle of Sol between > pinkie & ring finger, I calmly and deliberately rotated the part as Ah...the old "Why the heck didn't we evolve a third hand" routine. Alternatively I would be happy to trade for a different Datafile, let me know what you've got. I was talking to Part owner and he agreed. I can do it in the same way like with the SPAD A.2 set. But I can't guarantee if the details would fit to 1/48 kits. before I start working on the sets I need to know how many and which one would you like to have. Please contact me off-list. Could I be more explicit? > (...and I didn't even mention Macs...) Ok, but this will be my last computer-related msg here as this isn't a computer list. For the past 3 years I've used Linux on a box very similar to yours and my mail tool is Kmail. I don't even own a virus scanner and don't need one. Lest you think this is s 'fringe element' decision, IBM, Sun, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq and others have been dumping mountains of money into Linux development as their livelihood depends on solving these problems that Mr. Bill will not. As evidence that it's working, a little retailer by the name of Walmart is now selling Intel-based computers without an operating system on them. You'd be amazed at how much cheaper your computer is without paying Microsoft for the privilege (did I mention that all of my software is free?). No more than a month ago Forbes magazine ran an article describing the move to Linux on Wall St. as companies like Merrill-Lynch convert their operations to Linux. The US Post Office is using Linux. The Space Shuttle is using Linux. 5 countries in South America have legislated Windoze off the desktops of their government computers. Spain has just announced the conversion of 80,000 of their school computers to Linux. Ok...enough Linux. If you simply HAVE to use Windoze, there are many alternatives to Outlook. Many companies (the smart ones?) insist that their employees don't use Outlook and have adopted Eudora, Pegasus, Poco or other mail tool as their email tool. Someone mentioned that they "need" Outlook for work. There is a single reason for this and that would be that their IT guys are running Microsoft Exchange on their company network system. While I wouldn't do it, there are, I suppose, justifications for doing so and that does mean that you have to run Outlook (Bill's nothing if he isn't the best marketeer on the planet). BUT, for security sake, even (especially) the IT guys should be concerned about the use of such a virus sponge. All they need to do to allow other mail tools is to set up a POP server (takes a few minutes) that would then route mail to their Exchange server. Given that there are POP servers that the entire world can talk to and then MS Exchange that only Microsoft can talk to, it's not as though you're going down some dark alley to accomplish this flexibility. For what it's worth, Outlook talks just fine to POP servers too. In short, there are solutions to these problems. The reason most people don't know about them is that Microsoft spends their money with superb marketing, not in software development. Now...if anyone wants to discuss this, why don't we do it offline. I'm sure that the WWI afficionados are about to point out that there were no computers at that time :-) Cheers --- Larry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 08:25:32 -0300 From: "Diego Fernetti" To: Subject: Re: Virus warning! However, I must mention that I saw a computer from the early 1900s made in France to calculate tides in our Navy Museum, so I'm quite sure that artifacts like these were used during WW1. The computer itself was a extravagant medium sized wooden room filled with some thousands of brass gears and some other clockwork gizmos, that provided to the users some highly and precisely innacurate information that could best be replaced with an old sailor that looked out of any window. Apart from the room, the same applies to most computers of today, right? ;-) D. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 13:42:56 +0200 From: Crawford Neil To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: RE: Back Message-ID: And you missed putting D in his place for putting Teneriffe in the wrong place. I guess it's all in how you define "computer." I don't include the abacus or mechanical counting devices in my definition but you're right in some circles I'm sure :-) Cheers --- Larry ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 4384 **********************
