Cheers --- Larry >> As for washing kits before digging in, I think I may start doing that with some of the newer production ones- they seem to be greasier than kits once were. CA is a miracle product, provided we don't all find out that in the future it gives up! I don't want to wake up to a series of horrible snapping and pinging sounds in the middle of the night as my models suddenly both implode and explode! For certain joints such as fuselage halves, I'll usually begin with some solvent based stuff- MEK, laquer thinner.....or the ever evaporative Tenax, and then while the plastic is still soft and gummy, drizzle in some CA, letting it run down inside. For some reason, it seems to really work well specifically with MEK - they meet, like each other , and make a pact to enhance one another's properties. But- it doesn't work the other way 'round- if you use CA first, it seals out the MEK! The big problem is that it's really nasty on lungs and lots of people become allergic to it. I used to buy it by the case of 24 bottles for my R/C and F/F building. In recent years I've moved back to using other glues, saving CA use for only those cases where holding things in place for long periods of time is not practical. As for models coming apart, CA joints are more brittle than joints made with a lot of other glues but I can't imagine that this would be a problem for static models. > For some reason, it seems to really work well specifically with MEK - they meet, like each other , and make a pact to enhance one another's properties. CA needs a basic (as in pH) environment within which to work. Possibly the styrene/MEK interaction provides that. The components in the English ones wore quicker, and so tended to lose power with age much faster, as much as 20-40hp or more. The primary problem was a matter of supply since more engines were needed by a unit during a given time frame but if the engine deteriorated during a flight it could still put the pilot in a bad spot. The LeRhone developed more power than the Clerget, but because it was also lighter it worsened the handling problems. The Bentley was developed from experience with the previous engines, and bypassed the normal development channels - probably why it was as much of a success as it was. The vast majority of aircraft had the fabric stitched rather than tacked but the reason for taping is the same. It's there because every hole in the fabric weakens it - at the point of maximum stress where the rib presses against it. The tape is there to strengthen the fabric against tearing where threads have been cut by needle or tack, to seal the hole against ingress of water, to protect the stitches themselves and to streamline the surface. I originally found this whole subject bloody painfull. After about 15 years of putting blue on top and pink underneath I discovered that aircraft existed with blue or pink on both. Made me look at my collection with a somewhat jaded eye, I can tell you. It's only really since I joined the list in 1996(??? could it be that long ago?) that I started looking at lots of photos and discussing this business. And what I found is that I could find a *few* examples which definitely had the same colour top and bottom, but none at all which definitely didn't - which was in fact counter to what I wanted given the way I'd always made my models. Hardly definitive (absence of evidence etc) but certainly indicative. Add to that that *EVERY* restored aircraft that has either blue or pink tapes on it, AFAIK, has just *one* colour of tape. Of course, the curators of all those museums could be right stupid, far less knowledgeable than we are. Or not. Anyhoo, Dicta Ira certainly applies, but I do wish I knew exactly where Superscale got their ideas since that's the only source I had pre-Windsock Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s).
