Here's another thought. I checked the google site. In advanced search they have an option of limiting search to a specific site. I tried setting it to www.wwi-models.org. This seems to work better. Better still, it has another option that limits search to the Title of the page. So one pssibility is to stuff the keywords into the title tag. I think there are other search engine out there that can score on proximity of two words and so on. Coming back to your original suggestion, it has the classic problem of "what to index". The index page (or pages) you set up can be optimized only the particular kind of query you want. Eg, If I wanted to search for all models that used Americal decals, (I am getting exotic here), you would need a separate index page for that. Whereas with a search engine, you would need the discipline to put important keywords in the page. Much like the way libraries catalog books. regards SSH ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 12:47:20 -0400 From: Larry Marshall To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Which Strutter kit is preferable? Only downside is that it also picks up all the references in the msg archives but those seem to follow all the graphics hits so they can just be ignored. > www.wwi-models.org. The "main page" in this case is doesn't have any references to specific aircraft. > So one pssibility is to stuff the keywords into the title tag. > I think there are other search engine out there that can score on > proximity of two words and so on. Still don't see what you see here. If the graphics descriptions contain "Toko 1/72 Sopwith Strutter", putting those same words in a keywords tag won't change the hit success. > Coming back to your original suggestion, it has the classic problem > of "what to index". The index page (or pages) you set up can be We're back to "work" :-) Beyond manufacturer, scale and aircraft, I don't think you can do much better as each description is unique. The only way to do what you suggest would be to have a "Specs" sheet associated with each model that contained entries like: Manufacturer: Toko Aircraft: Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter Scale: 1/72 Decals: kit decals only Detail parts: Aeroclub prop, Tom's Modelworks gun Paint: Misterkit PC-10, Humbrol Radonne Tan Rigging: .005" stainless etc..... While it might be nice, it would also cause some people to say, "Too much trouble" and to go back and get all that info for everything already here (an impressive amount of stuff) would be tough. > Eg, If I wanted to search for all models that used Americal decals, > (I am getting exotic here), you would need a separate index page Not so exotic, given your idea of using Google. I just did an advanced search using "at least one of these words" where I entered Americal and Gryphon. It picked up a bunch of hits to Americal/Gryphon, Americal-Gryphon and America Gryphon. It would certainly be sufficient to show you most of the major decal types that they sell. > for that. Whereas with a search engine, you would need the > discipline to put important keywords in the page. Much like the The difference here is that while libraries need keyword lists, HTML searches use the text itself (the entire book if you will) as the keyword list. Thus, unless you're actually adding new words to an HTML page, listing them as keywords does nothing for these search engines. The primary reason for the keywords field in HTML is to provide information to the web cataloging spiders that try to rate sites based on their content, not to make search engines work better. I will certainly take your suggestion of using Google for this and put it to use. It's the real solution and a lot less work than anything I suggested. It's good that there are smart people in the world to make up for us dullards :-) Cheers --- Larry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 May 2002 18:45:22 +0100 From: Dave Fleming To: Subject: Back Message-ID: <1020534322.3cd41e320f997@netmail.pipex.net> Back from my week in Tenerife, forgot to unsub so have 600 messages awaiting !! Did > you literally do those on 5x8 file cards or was it on some sort of > watercolor paper? How did you transfer the sideview outline to the > 5x8 cards? The first profiles I did were after I saw DSA's work in an issue of WWI Aero. I thought he had a great idea and I set out to do something similar using those blank hardcover books .. I filled two of them with British, German and A-H 1/72 b/w profiles. Next I wanted to see what they looked like in colour, so I did a third book of watercolour sideviews. For all three of these I kept tracing GAs over and over through the pages .. I had no French curves at this time, so gentle curves had a little bump from time to time. ONe other problem was I was unable to change the order once they were drawn. One day I was in the stationary store and found some 5x8 file card binders, and I thought "Hey these are neat, wonder how it would work" I bought one ($12) and brought it home. The first profile I did on these was Willi Gabriel's Js11 D.VII. . It worked great, so I returned to store and bought another. May 1988 was spent on German aircraft, June on British, and then July on Austrian. I did none during August as I started a new job. The rest of the year saw me have 299 done by midnight on NYE, I had 700 by the end of 1990, 1100 by 1994. I made a light table by routing one of the leaves in my grandmothers dining room table (only thing of hers I wanted), put glass into it, with tracing paper underneath to diffuse the glare and placed a light underneath this. This table is great. . I have the computer on one end of it with the glass of the light table under the keyboard and a huge area for reference material. . and occasional meals - I'll post a photo of my work area to http://www.cbrnp.com/RNP/desk.jpg as soon as I send this. Old photo - I have since built three of the four ships shown there. I traced GAs from wherever I could find them unto 5x8 file cards. The first card of each type was then used aas a master template and whenever I had nothing else to do I would grab one of the masters, clip a blank card to it and trace it so as to try and have a few of each aircraft type ready for adding markings whenever the whim struck. This enabled me to do marking drawings if I was so inclined, or perhaps paint one that was already drawn. I still have some of these predrawn/unpainted cards from five years ago when I made the switch to the computer. The next step up was to do 1/24 acrylic profiles. . these were in the FMP VC book and also some rear covers of OTF. These were done on heavyweight watercolour paper. I still want to do more some day. The final step was to get the computer and to start doing profiles on it. ON my old Mac I did a bunch of crosshatched b/w profiles, and this lead to FMP suggesting I could do better ones on a more powerful computer. The collection now numbers 38 binders with over 1500 profiles (probably closer to 1600 now. I am slowly replacing some of the old watercolours with new computer profiles that are printed on 8x10 Epson card cut down to 5x8 (discontinued - so I need to find another source of high quality 8x10 card stock). It makes a real difference printing on thee better card stock .. normal file cards tend to look a little muddy due to absorbing the ink, So as I get around to it I am also replacing those I printed on plain file cards. The binders are also discontinued, so if anyone ever happens to find some National Brand 8.5 x 7 two binders by Dennison National Co. of Holyoke, MA 01041. They have product number 08-188 and also say Virgin Vinyl Ringdex, Made in USA. Colours are red, black, blue or beige. I have hauled these binders to the last 4.5 OTF seminars, and still have to decide if they will make the trip to the next one or not. Each year I say the same thing, but they are a hassle to pack. I combine them down to 18 binders and then have them as my carry on .. but that will probably not be allowed as they are a tad heavy and slightly oversize. One thing is doing these profiles has sure opened many doors for me !! Power output in early engines seemed to be variable, the Clergets used in Norwegian Sopwith Babys are given as 110, 130 and 150hp in various references. Externally they were the same, and it was said that 20hp could be the difference between engines made at different factories, but to exactly the same specifications. Some were probably more accurate when it came to tolerances ets. We are working on two flyable engines for the current Sopwith Baby rebuild, and besides the drawings and handbooks that we have found in Norwegian archives, the handbook reprinted by Camden is one of our best sources. Another key is that no one should take to the bank anything I say about engines. I'm far from an expert and don't claim to be. This afternoon, however, I took a look at the Clerget history that's on the French site I referenced earlier. It lists no 150hp Clerget whatever and it's consistent with the numbers I provided. Similarly, the Camel Datafile corroborates my suggestion that the 150hp engines in Camels were made by Bentley and that they were referred to as AR1s. Could be that there's a connection between this engine and the Clerget 9B in some way but I'm not expert enough to speculate. The interesting thing is that while many Camels sported 110hp LeRhones and 130hp Clergets, the big complaint within the RFC was a lack of power. According the Datafile the AR1 provided sufficient power. There is also a reference to "French-built Clergets" that provided sufficient power. I don't know if this is a reference to the Clerget 9bf or not. > that 20hp could be the difference between engines made at different > factories, but to exactly the same specifications. Catching up on digests and IM now. One moderately interesting nugget as a result of my visit to ED Models in Birmingham. I picked up the Scaleplane and the Formaplane 1/72nd Hanriot kits (well, at a quid each, and in the hope that it would hurry Eduard along, how could I not). It turns out that the plastic in both cases was exactly the same sheet. The good news is that it was a Chubbock production, and looks very crisp (the Scaleplane version has a very nice but age-yellowed transfer sheet). Goes to the top of the build stack (after the next DH2).
