Thanks, but I'll have a rental. Yes, it looks like my meeting will be in the Falls Church area; however, I have no idea yet if that's where I'll be for my hotel. The people I'm going with - whom have known about this meeting for months - are staying in Springfield. I, on the other hand - who just found out about it today - will be staying hopefully as close to the venue as possible. Undoubtedly, if anyone would I remember those. Welllllllll....there is absolutely no reason why people can't build in say, 1/24 scale using wood structures, cloth coverings, etc. Even those needles would work :-) We're dangerously close to the 1/48 vs 1/72 debate but it's always seemed to me that the larger you go the more detailing you HAVE to do and once you start depicting true fabric covering, you'd need a lot of hours per model more than either a 1/48 or 1/72 scale model. > > I still like the best reason to brush-paint. "I like > > the feel." > > I wonder how it would feel connecting workable controls in 1/72 > scale. Must be fun, huh? Must be :-) Modelbuilding is such a strange activity. Everyone has their own way of 'feeling' at various stages of it. I'm most excited when I'm planning a project and during the major structure stuff. Once the detailing begins I can go either way, either feeling that's it has become a job or a real thrill. When I'm done, however, it's just done....time to move to another project. As someone has said, it's the doing, not the finishing that matters. Message-ID: Howdy! Remember that thread we had about the "patchwork" effect on Hustad's Zepplin? Coincidently, when I was reading Wings in the Night by Willis Fitch (thanks Rory!) I came across a "patchwork" reference. Fitch had just received a brand new Caproni and then went on extended leave. When he returned he was surprised to find his pristine ship was now a dirty, patched up, quilt. I paraphrased all that, but the terms quilt and patchwork keep turning up in both discussions. The section of the book that contained that is on page 261 of my copy. It's copyrighted 1938. Anyway, so Hustad's patchwork effect may be more appropriate than originally thought. Later! Dope the wings with a clear paint of your choice, apply the cellophane as taut as you can, and when the paint dries hit it with some radiant heat from a hair drier or iron held nearby to tighten it up. How he adheres the dope film to the frame I don't In the slightly heavier classes, they use very thin mylar films that are used to make capacitors. Limited Pennyplanes (the 18"ws airplane weighs one penny) use this stuff. It should work for the open frame wings in exactly the same way. You lay some out on a table, take some 3M77 and spray it into the air, waving the wing through the cloud. Then you just 'roll' the wing onto the mylar. We use a hot knife to cut around the edges and this may be a problem with a plastic model but you should be able to rough-cut it and then sand the edge. If the frame is stiff enough, you can take a heat source and the film will shrink up tight. The flecks can be caused by the pigments congealing as you suspected, and also happens when Future is mixed with any ammonia based agent (i.e. most window cleaners). Since you didn't mention thinning it, I suspect you got a lot of congealed flat (which is actually a talcum powder mix!) that does happen when flat base gets old. It tooka a large basin of room temperature water, and a metal wire hanger. Bend the hanger ortion into something approacjing a circle. Pour the "Miracle" solution onto the water and it wouild create a very thing transparent film. Lft up the film with the hanger and then carefully place it over the item to be covered. It would adhere almost immediately. As I recall, some trimmed it with a (horrors) lighted cigarette, but my recollector is not famous for facts of that sort. Like the name of the substance.
