I have the "horizontal fin" depicted as being fabric covered - I did a quick checked back through my refernces and did not see any photos that clearly show what the covering was. There is an indication of wood covering on one of the stab rib station drawings - but I figured that was the root rib and was just showing the end of the plywood on the fuse. I guess the fact that it is often covered in lozenge was another factor which led me to believe it was fabric. Brian - are you sure ?? was the wood typicaly covered in fabric? I can't ever recall seeing a photo in which this area was left natural wood. well... I hope i have the exact orientation of that first ghost view saved somewhere so I can re-render that layer. And I better change the bump maps to get rid of that rib sag. damn mark Find the best deals on the web at AltaVista Shopping! http://www.shopping.altavista.com ------------------------------ Date: 13 Mar 2002 16:54:33 -0800 From: Mark Miller To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Replicating a wood finish Message-ID: <20020314005433.26750.cpmta@c016.snv.cp.net> On Wed, 13 March 2002, "ot811" wrote: ...It can be curved, but only on the grain axis, so if you were doing a albatros fuselage it would have to be done by panels. If you look at some of the panels you will see that they are curving around with the fuse - and also curving up to merge with the stab. I stay away from food based mixtures on models. This product says it contains Propyl Alcohol. I find it works best for me when airbrushed on. Others prefer to brush it. The instructions say you can spray it on decal paper, (glue on paper), paint or print a design and spray again to seal. Never tried it. I've always had good results as an overcoat for homemade or old decals and the local shops stock it, so I've never used any of the other similar products. sp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 20:25:39 EST From: KarrArt@aol.com To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Replicating a wood - Alb parts Message-ID: <84.24da2585.29c15613@aol.com> In a message dated 3/13/02 4:48:52 PM Pacific Standard Time, albatros1212@altavista.com writes: << I guess the fact that it is often covered in lozenge was another factor which led me to believe it was fabric. >> Yes yes yes....it's fabric covered !!!! <3C90379E.51679F6E@earthlink.net> I found Smer kits good for learning/confidence curves - I built the Alby D? and the fuselage turned out great...The Lafayette Escadrille Nie. 11 (learned about cheap airbrushes and overspray on this one) is nearing completion after only a few years of being a shelf queen. The radiator, scale, and other apects of the Aurora/Monogram/ Smer D.VII always bugged me, so I could not bring myself to build either one that I formerly owned. The Camel is rather like that too...come on, Ed!
