As we said, if one put us inside a wall, it'd become a mental asylum. If one put a tent above us, it'd be a circus. My face muscles are still tired of laughing so much for hours and hours. Contest was very nice and there were lots of models despite the distance between Catanduva and big cities of Sao Paulo state (6 hours on the road from Sao Paulo city to Catanduva). Among things that caught my attention were a 1/48 (sorry) XB-70 Valkyrie and a 1/32 F-4 Phantom (every time I see a Phanton I remember those Calvin comic strips). Ah, those folks who also like to build and paint figures may know a modeler called Marcelo Guerra (he was in our group of crazy people). He showed a 6-cm (IIRC) tall Gladiator figure (Maximus when he was a Roman general). If you come closer, you'll realize it's Russell Crowe himself. Really outstanding. Now to the OT models. As I imagined, only a few ones. Besides the two I took there, there were also a 1/72 Revell Fokker triplane in beginner category, and a 1/72 diorama with Berthold's D.VII and an Heller Roland C.II very beautifully done. Both got medals in their categories! On the table of Catanduva modeling group there were another Berthold's Revell D.VII and two Glencoe 1/48 planes, an A-H Albatros and a Nieuport. I talked for hours with young Rodrigo Hummel, the guy who built the Glencoe models. He likes WW1 a lot, speaks average English and, guess what, was very excited when I told him about the List. I think he will join us soon. So, after judging, I discovered that my two planes had not entered any category. Very strange! So I went to Mr. Toninho, president of Catanduva modeling group and a good friend of ours, to ask him some information on the category my planes were in (AFAIK, they didn't open a biplane or WW1 category since there were only my models there). He said "hm, very strange, it was not supposed to be like this. Give me a few minutes and I'll see what happened". Then I went to take care of other things (buy some kits in a shop - nothing OT, although - and help friends to pack their models). When I returned to my table to get my models, there was a bronze medal beside my Pfalz... the funny thing is that I will never be able to discover the category in which the plane was placed... propeller planes? German planes? Non-ww2 planes? :-) I took pictures, but must finish the roll first. Lately I can hardly remember things that happened last week. :-) The Rareplane/Warbird vac was my first vac. As I recall, it went together very nicely. I think the wing is three pieces (bottom and two top halves and the fuselage fits snugly in the middle. My main concern was the corrugations in the leading edges. I think I used a file to re scribe them. As far as memory serves, I think the corrugations actually line on. The kit was built BA (before Aeroclub) so there are no aftermarket pieces. The guns are from a Revell kit. Reference material was sparse at this time so I just built it as it came out of the bag. The Pegasus kit is nice for one of the earlier models his built. No metal guns, props or landing gear. The stabilizer is thick and needed some fuselage work to make it fit but that was only real problem with the kit. The decals set down with Solvaset (not to be used on newer Pegasus kits). The model is shiner in the photos that real life. Also, it has a windscreen now. I forgot it in the photo. The Rareplane kit is dead flat. I do build my models off the show room floor because I know for at least 15 minutes they looked that way. As far as a recommendation, personally I would do the same thing again and build both. I have on several occasions done this just to see the difference. The kits both have pluses and minuses but neither kit is that superior to the other in my opinion. And building both at the same time give you the opportunity to add to the lesser of the two kits making them both beautiful. :-) Thank you for the nice comments on the kit. Your model of the Pegasus kit has made the choice rather difficult, I didn't think it would look so good. Any other opinions, anybody? /Neil C. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 13:21:37 -0300 From: "Diego Fernetti" To: Subject: RE: Nomenclature question - side control horn Message-ID: <04b401c1c918$d1d24120$4640a8c0@ssp.salud.rosario.gov.ar> Michael, Sanjeev Curiously, as a non-english speaker and due to the relatively few wackos in the area to chat with, I learned most of my aeronautical terminology from english or french texts. Sometimes I lack the proper spanish words to describe "cabane struts" or "drift wire" and risking to sound snobbish I must pronounce them in english with my barely understandable babbling. IIRC, a bell crank describes the angled cranks of limited traverse as found in the ailerons (thus the similarity with the movement of a bell). IMHO, the device Michael describes would be simply described as "forward elevator crank", but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe in the DH2 datafile there's a better description of the item. There was also other form of such devices, as in the Gotha bombers, where it takes the form of a vertical "tie" wich pivots from its center. If you dare, you always con build the Pegasus kit as a Junkers D.I of elongated fuselage as oppossed to the Warbirds short-fuselaged junkers. Now doing the fuselage plug necessary for the conversion should be quite a challange! So why don't you build trains >or boats instead? (although we're all glad you don't:-)) I just like the look of aeroplanes more, especially biplanes. I've never done a WW1 monoplane, though I have a few kits. I've also built a couple of off topic USS military vehicles and have a few bits of 1/72nd scale Soviet armour in the closet - maybe I'll get back into that. I just try to find out enough about the aeroplane so I can build the model. That's why I like those Datafiles - I like books with a lot of pictures, where modeling references are concerned anyway:).
