I'll post my findings once I get them, unless I find something in the archives between now and then showing it has already been done. There are certainly things about modern magazines that *are* an advantage - colour profiles for example are more inspiring and a lot easier to grasp (thinking of deciphering the "colours" in the late Mike Keeps b&w profiles in SAM) > If I take a look to nowaday's european > magazines... full of glossy paper and perfect photos, but completely > uninspiring. What bugs me is that I think that the magazine editors are guilty of underestimating their readers. Sure, if you go to rec.models.scale you'll see posts by people for whom the slightest imperfection in a kit is impossible to imagine fixing, but there are also people out there - lots of them - doing more than just shaking the box, and it's not a big step from carving a kit about to add a detail set to making the details yourself. The missing ingredient seems to be the inspiration that a decent "Do it yourself" article can provide. Many, if not most, of the Italian Nieuports, at least the N.11's, and early 17's, had the French cockades painted out, but no national markings on the upper wing. Take a look at Alberto's Baracca Nieuport 17 on the web site. Find some nice rearing horses ala Ferrari, and make an Italian ace of ace's plane. .Mark. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill & Kaja Michaels" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2002 4:29 PM Subject: [WWI] !/32 N.17 and Italian decals > > I've got one of those 1/32 N.17 kits as well-- my 12 year old son > gave it to me for > Christmas. The Eduard Albatros D.V was the first kit I've built for about 2 years that had the struts all fit. Of course, the V-strut construction helps prevent alignment errors. Aside from that, the older kits with the "helpful" cross beams on the interplane struts also had their cabanes fit for the same reason; e.g. Revell SE5a. Less obvious is why everything lines up on the Airfix Bristol F.2B & Sopwith Camel. The Revell Fokker D.VII also fit but the interplane N-struts probably helped get the exact correct angle there too. Inbox Review of the 1/72 Ansaldo SVA.10: Very nicely casted..Virtually no pinholes or bubbles or any major imperfections..Really fantastic interior..I don't think you want to add anything except seatbelts...Your level of AMS will determine this...Wings are beautifully thin and ribs are beatifully represented on all flying surfaces..Fuselage has interior sidewall molded in and its PERFECT!!!..Even down to one or two switches, I don't have a magnifier handy to confirm that!!!! How the hell do these folks do this??? Surface detail is terrific on all parts. I usually replace with photoetch anyway, though the Lewis on this kit is as nice as any white metal one I have seen. The radiator grill is amazing!! One instruction sheet with a GA on one side and an exploded plan in the other...Decals appear to be SuperScale-quality and provide markings for an Italian and a Polish aircraft. A piece of clear stock is provided for the windscreen. A terrific kit!! Nieuport 25:Again, much like the above kit..This one has a couble of air bubbles on the fuselage, but nothing like the average resin kit and I mean a couple!! Two on one side and one on the other....Again, very thin flying surfaces and beautifly ribs...Fantastic interior detail again as well as side wall detail..The engine is nicely done, but could stand some sprucing up with add'l details...The cowl is a gem....Be careful with it as it is extremely thin..Matches up dead-on with the Datafile special plans..Decals are nice and provide markings for Nungesser's N1895, although they only provide the stripes for the top wing and some references show stripes on the top of the lower wings as well, so these will need to be done by you. This one will look like a 25!!! No doubt about that. Even Matt will like this Nieuport!! ; ) Albatros C.1: Again, a virtual repeat of the above....This one has more surface detail and it is beautifully done..There is even a compass molded in to the lower port wing!!!! Flying surfaces are tops....Super interior detail. Engine is good..Decals provide markings for a German and a Polish machine, nice quality.....No noticeable imperfections...Another beauty of a kit... These are the first OT Choroszy Modelbud kits i have gotten...I had been given a bunch of betweener Japanese Navy planes and was just as impressed as with these. If I were to rate these kits on a resin-kit scale of 1-10, these are 10's along with Ardpol...I haven't ordered any in the past because I just felt that they were great kits, but $35-45 for a 1/72 scale model was over the edge. At $22, still a little steep, but certainly worth it, IMO. I can't wait to pick up the rest of the Nieuports and possibly one of the Friedrichschafens...Hope no one minds the long post....Email me if you have any questions.... Sand, prime and painted with Mr. Kit German grey, they look fine. Nip the excess off in the correct uniform size and attach. I am going to try something similar for the Aeroclub Brisfit, that actually resembles the original strut. Same wire, encase it with carved halves of the correct shape from bamboo chop stick, sand, stain and varnish. If this works, I want to drill my pilot holes all the way through the wings, wide enough to share with the fishing line rigging, attach and snip. Paint outside of wings after assembly. I imagine that this has been done before. Has anyone on this list used this or a similar method? It promises to give strength and the correct look. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 15:48:16 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: RE: Strut Length Message-ID: <7186131CB805D411A60E0090272F7C7102BCDC3C@mimhexch1.mim.com.au> David says: > I am going to try something similar for the Aeroclub Brisfit, > that actually > resembles the original strut. Ummm, yes, me. On a Biff too and all. And plenty of other listees before and since I expect. My Biff's on the site in the Internet Modeller article archive if you'd like to see how struts look, though mine are actually solid bamboo with the ends drilled and pins inserted. He managed to score two tickets on the new Zeppelin operating out of Friedrichshaffen. I will gift him with a large package of Dramamine before he leaves and hope he'll bring me a new ball cap with "Zeppelin" on it. I always put at least a seat and a stick in the cockpit, but I have the attention span of a subadult mortal, so I have to move on to avoid creating another unfinished project. That's my method of choice too. You can always fit and fiddle the struts to exact length and then drill and pin them. sp ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 4204 **********************
