You will have little to no luck finding it under that title since it is a loose translation of 'Im Westen Nichts Neues' Nothing New in the West. Under that title, it is available from foreign language book sources. Todd __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Cooper, former USAS DH4 pilot, POW, founding member of the Kosciuszko (7th) Squadron during the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1920, producer of King Kong, etc... Dramatic licence taken with technical aspects, but unlike most of the other naively romantic American WWI aviation films of the '20s and '30s. Also, there may be a real Nie. 28 in it. I may still have it on tape somewhere... ibs4421 wrote: > Peter, > I am a big fan of "Westfront 1918" by G. W. Pabst. To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: HB-B.I Message-ID: <3C69FCC8.BEFB0F7C@x25.net> Most early aircraft were designed to be flown from the rear seat if the pane was carrying only one person. Even Piper Cubs in the 40s and 50s were flown that way. It was to maintain a center of Gravity that was best for flying. The second person was located, forward, on the center of gravity and did not affect the balance adversely to any great degree... Almost all training aircraft had full instrumentation in the rear cockpit. ONLY. That is just the way it was. Look at the photo of the JN-4D in the list Photo Archives. Roger is flying from the rear seat. Not because he liked it. It is essential to the balancing of the plane. Most WWI planes were similar in attributes. Engine and fuel up front . Pilot toward the rear equals balance... A suitable center of gravity. The plane flies... Students and Observers usually rode up front. (As mentioned they were on the center of gravity.) They had almost no instruments on the panel. They got to the instruments, later, after they could make it fly straight by the seat of their pants, and, a then few other basic manuevers. Like landing... There are full controls in both Cockpits. Can not do much trainig with only one set of controls. That is how the student learned to fly... I am not sure any other method would work. He has to be able to control the thing while learning. Also remember some student got a whole five to eight hours of flight training before they went overseas. It didn't take long in those days. I do not know when they invented the Gosport tube but it could have been used in Jennies. I suppose they had a pre-planned, manual, message control system so each would know what was going on., I do this, you do that and away we go. My uncle taught me by tapping me on the head with a piece of broom handle. That's what makes me the way I am today. To many hard knocks. He may have thought I was sleeping. Hope you like the Jenny it is one of my best shots. That is "The Photo". It was not corrected in any way. Lee M. I have WF1918, AQOTWF, Wings, Dawn Patrol, Blue Max, Paths of Glory, The Light Horsemen, and a couple of more forgettable titles. Of these my favorite is Paths of Glory. I think Kubrick captures the French experience in 1917 very well from several levels. WF 1918 is also a favourite. For Australian films, The Light Horsemen isn't bad, if a bit clichéd. I've just finished reading the Hornet/Goshawk Squadron trilogy and am wondering why this hasn't been filmed (perhaps the cost?). It would make a great film.... Another book crying out for the big screen is John Harris' "Covenant With Death". A really good novel about the first day of the Somme. Also have "Four Years of Thunder" - I agree with other Listees, its well worth getting. I'm sure that you'll have a good time here. About movies... "The Great Waldo Pepper": Great aerial footage, and a lot of OT planes. Best scene? Susan Sarandon falling from a wing. "Paths of Glory" Already commented "All quiet ..." Already commented, just another advice: avoid the newer version with Ernest Borgnine. It sucks! "Galipolli": I wonder why no one mentioned this one. I liked it. "Dawn Patrol" I liked the one with the young David Niven. "Capitaine Conan" A french movie wich I can't say if it was released in USA cinemas. It's about a little known episode happening after 11/11/18. A french captain refused to end the war! "Lawrence of Arabia" Needs any comment? About documentaries, I still have to watch "four years..." but I saw a movie once that was a good synapsis of the war. It's called "The Guns of August" and it's based on a Pulitzer Prize book.
