The London press at the time said much the same about the ANZAC troops. Australia had ludicrously high standards for entry in the first two years of the war and *never* dropped by much - remember ours were all volunteers too. Meanwhile, by 1918 the remaining French were drawn from levies which included those rejected earlier in the war - to use a tired phrase, the flower of French youth were already long dead. I had the whole series, these are all I have left unbuilt. (All those I built were triumphs of the vacform manufacturers art at the time IMO. When the guy who produced them died, we lost a great master maker) FWIW "the guy" was Jim Wood - a great modeller as well (as well as an interesting personality, with a background of driving a lot of military and civil aircraft and lots of stories about these experiences), and one of those guys who made the trip to London´s "Southern Expo" worthwhile in the late 80ies and early 90ties (and sadly enough, he died on the day before the SOuthern expo in ´91 - at least as far as I can remember). But thinking about the "triumphs of the manufacturers art", it seems to me that this is sadly enough becoming a lost art, with fewer and fewer producers around. Schaedler (the guy who invented Airmodel) is long gone, Joe Chubbock as well, Richard Frank and Gordon Sutcliffe sold their stuff, Airframe is no longer, Detlef Schorsch will not do any vac´s any more, and the master of them all (Gordon Stevens of Rareplanes/Warbirds fame) also has dropped out of the business. While I admit that overall our situation for modeling in general and OT stuff in particular has substantially improved over the years, I really miss that variety and creativity brought to us by those guys with their vacs in the 80ies and 90ies. And to me at least, a resin still isn´t the same (plus who does a resin 72 scale Staaken or Vickers Virginia/Victoria/Valentia FIVE pack, to name a few?). (as well as an > interesting personality, with a background of driving a lot > of military and > civil aircraft and lots of stories about these experiences), Yes, that's him. I learned of his passing in an "Icarus" or "Vacform View" column in SMI - both written by the also sadly missed Geoff Prentice. I lay the blame for whatever standard of modelling independance I've acheived to four people, Saint Harry of course, Dick Stracey in Toowoomba, Queensland Australia who sold me my first vacform kit about 25 years ago, Joe Chubbock who mastered some of the first such kits I built (whic turned out so well that I found a better model in the bag than any WW1 injection kit of the day), and Geoff Prentice whose advocacy of vacforms in SMI led me to trying many I'd never have known of including the beautiful Esoteric vacs. > > But thinking about the "triumphs of the manufacturers art", > it seems to me > that this is sadly enough becoming a lost art, with fewer and fewer > producers around. In part, variety was the attraction. Until I found that vac models of 1/72 WW1 subjects usually looked more nearly like the original than any injection kit AND provided a greater degree of entertainment as well. That discovered, I'm prepared to bet that between 1980 and 1990 I built two vacs or *more* for every injection kit I finished. > And to me at least, a resin still isn´t > the same (plus > who does a resin 72 scale Staaken or Vickers > Virginia/Victoria/Valentia FIVE pack, to name a few?). Also, are there 1/32nd aftermarket decals for this plane? 'cause I plan to build a dozen of these puppies. And just as important, if you guys know of any inaccuracy about the Hobbycraft model please let me know. All the reviews I've found are pretty lenient -at least that's my suspicion. Lacking in some details such as cowl flanges and underwing strut fairings, but a decent kit. I have Estonian and Russian markings (sans cockades) from the "International" issue that you're welcome to. And don't forget the captured Turkish one with the big black squares! That's true, and I'd forgotten. Funny how the great outburst of vacs in the eighties can largely be attributed to maybe fewer than a dozen people, some working for multiple "manufacturers" (most of which were in reality one man and his dog working in the garden shed Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s).
