Generally I don't like overloading my computer with a lot of shareware stuff, but WinZip, GetRight, ArlesImageCreator, AceHTML and MagicFileRenamer are my 'must have'. MFR is amazingly good and useful commodity. It's available at tucows site. Of course *my* shelves of shame ("ready use locker") already has one and my garage of shame has a couple more, so I could care less *personally* but I do feel sorry for those salivating at the thought of building a few at eBay prices. Meanwhile, I expect the AEG to sell for well over the A$100 mark so watch eBay if you need to buy a child or two.... As Bill lived in Canyon (about 5 hours away), I doubt these are his. The owner also mentioned that the deceased would not let his wife touch his finished models, even for cleaning, and that the widow seemed somewhat hostile to the man's hobby. This does not meet the description of Bill's wife, whom many of us have met and talked to. Another giveaway is that the owner said the man was very deep into airliners in his last years. I would say that only about 20 percent of the collection is WWI. There's the same proportion of ships, including about 15-20 1/2000 WWII warships from Otaki. This collection is where I scored the Halberstadt CL II a few weeks ago. I was back at the store yesterday and picked up the K&B Albatros C III and the Mikesh Albatros DV book. I hadn't seen any books the first time around, but saw plenty yesterday. The owner is still sorting through boxes and puting things out. There were some profiles: "Gotha IV and V," "SE 5" and others; as well as the Munson books on 1914-1919 bombers and fighters. When I was in the first time, the onwer had said he wasn't interested in doing mail order on the collectin as he hasn't had time to go through and price everything. We locals get to go in, pick what we want, then discuss the price with him -- a little hard to do over the phone. There aren't many bargins, he's charging mainly market prices, but not Ebay prices--if you know what I mean and I think you do. He still hasn't priced everything and still is not at the point where it would be convenient to do mailorder. Another complicting factor is that the collection is in a part of his building that is not near a telephone. Forgive the long post ... Nothing a piece of card coulsn't cure. The rest of the kit looked quite buildable. Yes, but that particular race can be more like a Marathon/obstacle course event. In theory, a a few large sheets of plastic card and plastic rod constitutes a "Kit". Practice, however, is something different for most people. Regarding "Australia day" - I was going to wish our Australian folks a "Happy One" when I saw it mentioned on Hyperscale. However, I was uncertain whether Hyperscale was having an "Australian" special - in other words just Australia-related topic for enjoyment, or if it was really a National holiday. I was going to look it up before possibly showing my ignorance. Happy "Australia Day", belatedly. a fair diescription of the old Aurora kit and it's clones, but not the Monogram re-tooling which has improned detailing and particularly fine struts.I'm still hopeful, but hanging on to some of my DML <155.7f19197.2985921e@aol.com> Yesterday, I was talking to Mike Ridlon of Bluprint Models and I mentioned John Adams vacform techniques. Mike told me he uses drywall & plaster sanding screens, considering them much better than sandpaper. I picked some up at Home Depot (a large hardware/builders supply chain store). It's made by Norton. It's a stiff, double sided screen cloth coated with a silicon carbide abrasive. I found it in 120, 150 and 200 grits and three sizes: 3 1/2X9, 4 3/16X11 1/4 and 9X11 inches. The package gives Norton's website as: www.nortonabrasives.com I haven't checked it out yet. Mike said he places the screen on a white plastic kitchen cutting board and uses it in the sink, running water over the work to rinse the residue away. I'm going to try it tonight. I use a small one (palm sized) to shape wood when trying to rough out larger size patterns but it'd be far too coarse to work on a vacform shell. The Sanvik however.... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 09:34:08 -0800 From: Rory Goodwin To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Hi-Tech AEG G.IV enroute Message-ID: <3C543A10.8F9DE2BE@earthlink.net> FWIW, the only HiTech kit I ever opened the box on was the Nie. 24/27, and the worst part was the fuselage (scale texture roughly aproximating stucco)- because all the rest were from the Eduard Nie.17 kit. Don't recall PE, but I guess it must have had some - probably duplicating the Le Rhone intake pipes error of the Eduard kit. DML has really done its homework -they're nearly museum quality miniatures suitable as reference for modelling projects.
