Fortunately, the text is both German and English. Lots of lists of Jasta leaders and the organization of German aviation units. 30 pages of color side views, most of them fairly well-known but there are a couple of zingers I hadn't seen before. About half the book is photos, three to a page with brief captions--small, but quite good quality on the slick paper. Again, many familiar faces, but some shots of early planes not often seen: Tauben, DFW Mars biplane, Ottos and Agos, and a Rumpler G.I and G.III (now there's two I'd love to see kitted...) >> I have a sentimental attachment to that book. With my very first check from my very first job as a teenager I got a money order and claimed a pre-publication copy from John Caler Mail Order Books. I waited and waited and Caler waited and waited and the book never appeared.......a few months later I got a refund and an apology. When the book finally emerged, I was on to other things. Almost 35 years later I spotted the book at a collector show and finally got my greedy fingers on a copy. A lot of information has since been gathered and a lot of the book is woefully out of date, but it's still a classic, and on sheer pleasure level, it's great to flip through the damn thing and muse. Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 19:40:28 +0100 From: "Hans Trauner" To: Subject: Re: Background ideas Message-ID: <001101c1a698$ed751e40$8aad72d4@FRITZweb> There are several variants to make backgrounds: a) make a photo and enlarge it in the conventional way. As Matt prefers 1/72, it does not need to have a large size. I have done this but never was happy as it is surprisingly hard to find a appropiate subject! In March I'll go to Oberschleißheim, a real WWI landing ground which is still in business today and will try it again. b) take a look to large size photo calendars with landscape themes. They can be cutted to the right size and if the ground / earth is not suitable, simply use your airbrush to create one. c) take a look for backgrounds in the model railway department. Subjects are sometimes 'kitschy', but there are simple Sky subjects also. To create earth, follow b) d) What I did: I went to the Deutsches Museum, Munich. This Museum holds a first class Jasta 5 scenario as a diorama. I took several ( conventional) photos. I had those photos enlarged to the max. size my scanner could handle. After scanning I retouched them with Photopaint and for a 'sky plus earth' background I 'removed' several parts of my photo scans and stitched them together to one background. I printed this in photoquality on my HP deskjet. The max. printer size is good for 1/72, for 1/48 I put this print on a colour xerox machine and enlarged it to A3. These prints / copies were mounted with a spray glue on 'cardboarded foam', it's a foam core with cardboard on both sides. e) The need to curve the background depends on lightning conditions. If you avoid shadows with your light equipment, there is no need to curve it. f) What I did also: Take a photo a) or d) and scan it. Take your model and make a pic with light grey background. Take Photopaint/Photoshop and mount your model into the background... Samples d) and f) on request! Just send me a mail off-line. It was a sad illustration of what happens to an avid modeler/collector's stash after he/she passes away. In this case the poor widow was left with 6 large pickup truck loads of kits (obviously not all were OT). If the shop knows her well I might give her one of the kits once I complete it. I don't know if she'd appreciate it or not. I never know how to handle bereaved people.... Anyhow, the collection is so large that the proprieters haven't had a chance to go thru and price everything. I went thru and selected what I might be interested in if the price was right. I thought I'd list some of the other items in case some of you were interested. Some of this stuff is relatively hard to find. There are multiples of many of these. There is more I didn't see or remember. If there is something you are looking for let me know off list. I'll look again when I go back next week. I have know association with this company.
