The second application beside decals where the printer excels are photos - an excellent addition, if you have a digital camera. The prints really look like a printed photograph, the colors are much more intensive. operating cost: basically sky high. cartridges cost are something like 6 to 10 US $ per cartridge, you need cyan, magenta, yellow, black, white, finish, primer, the thereīs the metallics - and those cartridges do not last as long as a typical inkjet cartridge. Especially the white has a shorter ribboin, and is one of the most expensive. Iīd guess the operating cost are 4 to 6 times as high as those for a high quality laser or inkjet printer - at least. reliability: The printers are not very reliable, judging from reports on the ALSP decal list. the achilles heel of the printers is the print head, whiich consists of a number of elements which transfer the color. If one dies, you will have a "banding" problem, where there will be thin white lines in the print. The printer will last longer if you donīt overheat it (do not print to many things at a time), and if you carefully clean it "The decal fans think this is the greatest printer in the world. Why hasnt it caught on?" Iīd say: price, operating cost, relaiability problems. Plus you obviously need more than the printer itself (ie, graphics software) to produce the decals. "- is there an online site that has a comparative review of this printer?" None Iīm aware of, but there is the ALPSDecal site, where you find sooome useful comments under http://www.catskillarts.com/alpsdecals/index.html "- would you advice against buying it used, on say, eBay. What should I expect to pay. - I saw some postings on the list about it going out of production, do I have to worry about supplies?" These can be answered together: ALPS stopped selling these printers in early 2000. The MD 1000 and itīs sisters are AFAIK no longer in production. The OKI DP 5000 and 7000 are still in production. Therefore you will have to get a used one - EBAY is one chance, but you also find them sometimes on the ALPS decal mailing list. Or you get one from Europe or Australia. The cartridges are obviously still available. The question is more whether OKI will continue the series or not...
