Hey!!! We tried metric! Once in the 70's, and once recently on a probe to Mars. But it is meant to be an historical book. Therefore, if you are seeking detailed photos or drawings, that is not the reference which can meet your needs. The text has by far the major share of the available space and pictures are generally small and not too clear, as far as details are concerned. Drawings are provided for most of the machines produced by R.A.F. before and during WW1, but they are small and I am not sure about their accuracy. Almost no views of cockpits and / or interiors. A book for the historian, not for the modeller, but VERY interesting reading. If you are interested in getting a few historical books for your library, buy it. I can add though, that is was in the Bargain Book selection at Midland Counties for ?11.99, well worth it I thought, I bought it for myself for Christmas. Also got the Sopwith book, which is similar and a couple of the Aircraft Archive series; "Junkers" and "Air Transport the first 50 years". I made sure I had a nice Christmas! /Neil C, ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 17:39:49 +0100 From: Crawford Neil To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: RE: R: RAF Book opinion Message-ID: Could have fooled me;-) Your description sounded just like the Crowood book, except when I think about it, I'm not sure there were any line drawings. Still a good book! /Neil C. > -----Original Message----- > From: a.casirati@cornali-trasporti.it > [mailto:a.casirati@cornali-trasporti.it] > Sent: den 4 januari 2002 17:28 > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: [WWI] R: RAF Book opinion > > > My previous message about this topic deals with a different > book, albeit on > exactly the same subject and by the same author: sorry for > the mistake ! > > Alberto Casirati > > ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 11:46:48 -0500 From: "StefenK" To: "WWI Modeling List" Subject: Re: Hippel DVa "blitz" scheme question Message-ID: <3C2A4F4F000D3134@mail.san.yahoo.com> (added by postmaster@mail.san.yahoo.com) To WW Modeling List re: von Hippel's Blitz Some random thoughts on this interesting markings question: 1. There are deep and wide pitfalls to assigning hue identities to the grayscale tones of black-and-white photographs. This is especially so respecting the darkest tones, which on prints made from otrthochromatic emulsions might represent black, red, orange, or even deep green in the original scene. As noted by others, even black cannot always be used as a benchmark for reasons of possible differences in the properties of different paint films. One of the clearest examples of this is the edelweiss-marked Albatros of Kissenberth, assuming we are confident that the fuselage *was* painted black. In the reproduction on p 43 of Osprey's Albatros Aces the fuselage ovefpainting is two to three grayscale steps lighter than the fuselage cross. Also, if we accept current evidence for the transfer of Kirschstein's "Optical Illusion," even the redoubtable Dan-San Abbott has been led astray by such tonal anomalies in his (attractive but suspect) red-and-blue interpretation of the photographs of this machine. 2. Despite the foregoing, it is interesting to note that in the photo of the flipped Flashar D.V (p. 9 o the Profile), the fire-breathing dragon *is* cleanly lighter than the black of the Eiserneskreuz. To my old eyes, this cannot be said of the "Blitz" in any of the photos. 3. Hans makes some interesting points about the possible chronology of the photographs. I am not sure whether the photos are as clear-cut as he suggests, however. The "prang-in-the-snow" photo of the 2-tone-wing "Blitz" is must obviously be before the end of the snow season, approximately 1 April. But both the port 3/4 view and the front view of the pranged lozenge-wing could have been taken anytime prior to the leafing-out of the trees that are visible behind the hangers (at Cappy, I believe). It is probably not a coincidence that these latter views are taken in front of the same two hangers--nos. 1 and 2--and are both credited to the same collector, Egon Krieger. I am led to suggest that for one reason or another, these were taken very close together in time. Is the former an "after" photograph with the proud von Hippel in front of his newly repaired Albatros? I do not see the diagnostic fairings on the two-tone-wing that would positively identify it as a D.V, and Volker's quote from C&C (GB) vol 1 no 3 (1970)—"the Albatros D Va he [von Hippel] himself later flew (from 12th March to 5th May 1918)"—suggests that there was but one machine during the time frame suggested by the seasonal evidence of the photographs. That J5 appears to have re-equipped with Fokker Dr. Is prior to June (see Data File Special, p. 9) is consistent with the proposed chronology. 4. The vagaries of historiography may be more interesting than the markings themselves. It is perhaps ironic that Gray seems to be the source for both interpretations of the markings, and it would be interesting to know on what basis he made his red interpretation in the Profile five years before the C&C article. Since publications in this field appear to be a little shy of providing the necessary scholarly apparatus, we are often left with these problems, and the persistence of errors or outdated interpretations. I thank Vollker for providing the C&C quote, and in the absence of any further reports from eyewitnesses or other primary source documents, it would appear to be the definitive statement about the "Blitz."
