Kit Hunter,
You are condemned to a model life of building planes that have only 3 wings.
No more, no less... ;-) How is the Tripe going???
Cheers

| Feturbi - FE2b? Quirk? ? What about Big Ack and Little Ack? Do they feel
| left out? and does operational use define inclusion? I like these sort of
| projects, - when I first returned to the hobby, I thought I could set a
| goal to build every OT type modelled in 48 or 72. Now I know this to be
| close to impossible - so now I just model what takes me. (except for an ot

I had to bring some work home to do on New Years Day, so I'm starting it
tonight again...first move is on to the computer to order an Oberursel from
Earl (and to try not to buy anything else.......), then sticking a
carburettor intake back on (again), and then its mixing PC-12 and maybe
some spraying.....
I'm not sure what comes after the Tripe....something eeeeeeasy and strictly

Then there's always the (ot alert!) Sunderland project......

Dear listees,
just came back from Oz, where we extended our stay to help the Aussies get
an overview over their wine reserves (by reducing them substantially...).
Saw the Sydney Harbour fireworks, and it was truly spectacular. However, I
could also see the terrible bushfires around Sydney after takeoff, and they
were really frightening. Hope our listees concerned (Ross, Shane & Lorna?)
are all fine...
Whatever, (even though somewhat late) a Happy and Successful New Year for
all of you out there!

Subject: ...and an OT report on Australia
Message-ID: <006901c19350$4f870500$236e160a@CSP00>
For those planning something similar and as a general information, here are
some OT remarks on my last trip:
1. Australian War Memorial
The AWM has (as already stated a number of times) opened the new ANZAC
gallery early in 2001. While quite impressive from the layout, this one has
one distinct disadvantage: In order to get a good "artistic" impression, the
whole gallery is *very dark* That's especially true for the place where they
got their SE 5A, which is placed in a dark corner of the display. You can
only see the front, and few details can be made out. On the other hand, the
2 OT tanks (an FT 17 and a Mk IV(?)) and some of the guns can be seen from
all sides, but it's still to dark around them. All in all, the whole thing
might be quite nice for the "standard" visitor, but is somewhat
disappointing when it comes to those interested in details etc.
BTW, the ot part of the galleries - also the Pcaific War Air Galleries in
front of the ANZAC hall - are somewhat better then the OT gallery when it
comes to lighting and access.
2. AWM Treloar Technology Center
One important remark: The Treloar Center is *officially closed* for the
public since ANZAC hall was opened. It is now more used as a storage and
restoration facility alone. However, after 2 phone calls I got the
permission to see it, and when finally there, I could not only get access to
the Mezzanine floor overseeing the storage hall, but also go inside. Bad
news were that
a) the lighting equipment (beside the emergency light) was not working -
difficult to take photos therefore
b) the aicraft are all dismantled, ie wings, wheels, tailplanes etc are
taken off.
OT aircraft consist of the DH 9 ("PD"), an Avro 504, the Pfalz D XII and the
Albatros D Va. The DH 9, the Pfalz and the ALbatros are all in an excellent
condition (even though the spinner of the Albatros is missing - Shane got a
story on that one), and after getting down I could close examine them (no
additional fencing etc...). Superb experience, but as I already indicated,
it took some effort to get the permission. ot-wise, there are some
interesting Beufort relicts, the Lancaster, a Ki 43 wing and fusleage center
section, a Bf 109 G fuelage and the Me 262 "black X", as well as a few more
modern "burners"
3. RAAF Museum Point Cook
Was only there in January, not this time. As already discussed earlier,
their Farman is beautiful. Too, I got an Aussie aircraft restoration
magazine on the trip which included photos of the new (replica) SE 5A and
Avro 504 build for Point Cook, and they look rather nice
4. Harrry Butler Memorial in Minlaton
Most difficult part was to convince my family to get there, as Minlaton
basically lies in the middle of nowwhere, when it comes to the touristic
attractions of Oz (even though the Yorke peninsula has some natural
attractions as well). The memorial houses the *only* original Bristol M1 C
still existing (according to the old Rimmell book on WW I survivors at
least), and it has been converted to "near original" standard recently (the
Rimmell book still claims it's in it's later status with an inline engine).
The whole memorial is very nice, the M 1 a beauty (even if not completely
original). Only bad point: The memorial closes at 1 pm each day, and I was
there at 3:30 - still a lot could be seen through the large glass fronts of
the building. However, if you're there before 1 pm, you can get direct
access to the aircraft. Potos will go to Allan after the weekend
5. Ross/Smith Memorial in Adelaide
As already described by Cam and Shane, this is THE (England to Australia)
Vimy. It's on Adelaide airport, between the International and the Domestic
Terminals (in a small building of its own). The aircraft bcan not be
accessed directly. it is protected by very thick (uncoated) glass and can
therefore not be seen to clearly, but it is obvioulsy in a very good
condition. Lighting conditions were not very good when I was there (early in
the morning, with a very low sun), but I could still take some photos of
adequate clarity.
Overall, I was quite impressed by the generally good status of most of the
stuff that I saw (and also of the effoorts that obviously go into preserving
it). Too, it should be noted that you stumble across some interesting OT
artillery pieces nearly everywhere in Oz - the climate obviously helps
preserving them in a good condition, as most of them are in the open on
market places etc. I personally liked the rather strange looking German 25
cm Minenwerfer (a kind of mortar, I guess?) that I saw in Hahndorf - but
then I maybe liked the wheat beer even better...

I'm still here but in a deep non-building funk. The Pegasus
Junkers D.1 is 50% but dead in the water. I'm using something beyond ot to
get back in the building frame of mind. It should be finished in a week or
so and I will post it on my web site. The last time I felt this way I did

Actually we also were at a beautiful little place called Warrenmang (near
Moonambel/Avoca) in Victoria, which had the most beutiful chalets
overlooking the vineyards one can imagine. I was quite impressed what kind
of quality those guys can produce in an area which obviously has less then
ideal conditions for wine production...

Same over here; what I did not mention is the fact that I could meet both
Ross (for a morning tour through Sydney) and Shane (for an evening dinner in
Brisbane). While the list is a great thing, meeting listees in person is
just one step better (especially true for me - I guess I got no listie
within a 4000 km radius). These discussions (and seeing other peoples
models, like Shane's new Dr I) are always a great motivation to get back to
modeling table...

Not me. I know that a lot of these guys sweated bullets over every little detail
of these things, and spent hundreds of hours and many $ on them (which are both in
short supply at my house). Some also tend to take the competition aspect so
seriously that they won't build outside their main subjcet/era of interest for fear
of not bringing home trophies. I respect the craftsmanship and focus, but some of
the fun is lost.

Thanks Rob. The article on the Rif War, 1920-1927 is good. I didnt even know
that this happened.. I like the plane profiles in that article as well. ;-)
Cheers
Ross

Subject: some albatros d.ii questions
Message-ID: <001201c19358$b11c1fa0$454f07d3@computer>
Doodz (et al.),
After finishing the BM Halbie Cl.II a la Dr. Tom (even same Schlasta...23b),
I am now jumping into the new Eduard Alb. D.II Profipack, which arrived from
Hannant's yesterday (along with Aeromaster Lancaster decals! Sorry!).
Decided that, as it's a D.II, it would be a shame not to do one with the
radiator "ears". Have since been burning the midnight oil checking up on
paint schemes, etc. A few "issues" I have, in no particular order, that I'd
be mighty obliged for help with:
- Rib tapes: As my D.I. said twenty some-odd summers ago, "The only dumb
question is the question not asked". So, here goes. As someone who has been
OT modeling since the Sixties, I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but
should the wing surfaces have rib tapes? Would these extend to the control
surfaces? How about the tail?
- Albatros "light" or "pea" green (the shade I ribbed you about, Bob L.):
The Datafile Albatros special has no mention at all of this shade in the
D.I/D.II series, or of the three-tone scheme employing it that is shown in
the Eduard instructions. Has some new research revealed this scheme/color in
the years since the Datafile was published?
- A related question, perhaps: the instructions call for this "light green"
to be used on the rudder of the machine I want to model (Hans, I believe you
are modeling the same scheme). Rimell has clear-doped rudders on some D.IIs.
Can't help shaking the feeling that, if Ray is right, then the Eduard folks
might have mistaken a clear-doped rudder for one painted with the elusive
pea green.
- "Albatros metalwork green": This is another shade about which there seems
to be a lot of different interpretations. Y'know, the green the Albatros
series used for engine covers, struts, inspection panels, joystick, etc.
NASM Albatros uses almost an FS 34097 dark green (this is close to the
MisterKit "Albatros Green" I just bought, but I think that shade is supposed
to be for camo schemes). Other folks use something very close to RLM02,
while still others have this color as being, for all purposes, a light gray.
Certainly, photos of the earlier Albatri seem to show a very light color,
but then again, who can be authoritative when dealing with orthographic
colors? Did this green just get darker as the war went on?
