You, old man, are a cruel bastard. Well, I've sort of permanently stalled my Albatros W.4 Makes no sense to continue, given that the fuselage is basically a D.II and Eduard will surely release one without any further assistance from me. That leaves the LVG C.VI I started two years ago and.... > I sure some > East European kit manufacturer wants to know. ....I don't know that Chris Gannon is in Eastern Europe :-( > Kits will > follow. Please don't keep us waiting. The other is a Caproni Ca.3 started right after I finished my Biff, whenever the heck that was. Lest anyone get excited, I doubt if I've gone anywhere near the point of no return on either model. If a decent injection moulded kit is released, they're bin liners, (Ummm, trash can liners) so there's no way the Modelling Gods would get sufficient perverse pleasure at this point. FWIW here is the status of my scratchbuilds - you will see very little progress :-( W.4 Fuselage almost done, wings and empennage all roughed out. One float master ready to cast. LVG Fuselage finished, from basswood (wooden bits) and plasticard (metal bits). Some details made (louvres, seat) W.4 Engine masters made ready to cast. MG master made, needs detail. I imagine that we've all (at some time) thought.... "Wow, it'd be nice to build a collection with one of every *****" ....but lifes realities have intervened and the opportunity, if not the enthusiasm, isn't there. I'm just wondering whether anyone else on the list has a super collection project (or projects!) for completion, when they win the lotto, and their partner runs clean out of honey-dos, and the kids leave home and ........ I have one project that I've thought about for years which is both OT and ot and which I have *started*, another of which Ross would approve and a third which may be small enough to acheive in, say, 30 years ;-) Project 1 - The Sopwith Series - Every Sopwith *and* Hawker type up to and including the BAE (Hawker)Hawk with selected important aircraft skeletonised to show the advance of technology. I thought to build a Camel, Hart, Hurricane, Hunter and Hawk in stripdown mode, and finished the stripped Hurricane about 10 years ago. It's *okay* but bloody lonely ;-) Project 2 - The History of 2AFC/2Sqn RAAF - I originally intended this in 1/72 because I couldn't see a 1/48 Lincoln being all that popular with SWMBO, but if I ever attempt it, it'll be 1/48 because I'd hate to give Matt 40 years worth of gloating :-) Project 3 - RFC Two seaters - I think this one is doable. I have a Biff, and good kits of Harry Tate, Fetubi and Quirks are available from my shelves already. DH4 and DH9 kits are coming and with a scratchbuilt Martinsyde and not too much other work we have a collection! Hmmm, all PC.10 stuff. I also admit that Americals sheets caused me to fantasise in turn about building entire Jastas, complete RFC squadron and about a zillion Storks, and now Volkers wondrous Jasta 40 sheet has me wondering if I can build eight 1/72 Fokker D.VII without going crazy - but these are only minor flights of fancy, not the Full Monty craziness of "The Collections" Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s). There is a really fundamental question (or two!) here. 1) Who are you primarily building for? I am building for ME! I try hard to get the technical craft bits right, ie straight and with no horrible seams showing, correct scheme. But as far as the colours go, I do it to please me. Apart from anything else, I have spent the past thirty years of my life closely allied to the art and science of colour reproduction, and I must admit I resent some amateur judge telling me the colour is wrong. It's right for me. 2) How can you possibly sort out who is right and who is wrong? You can't so don't bother, but remember that fashion plays a big part. There always seems to be "this years weathering look". If you want to win prizes, you tend to have to subscribe to that. Build for you, and have a GREAT New Year. Message-ID: I think you will find that the swirls have a practical use; ie they delay the onset of cracks in the alloy. Early aircraft were notoriously shaky, what with big engines and light airframes. The sheet alloy parts were very prone to cracking from this minute flexing. Someone determined that these microscopic cracks started on the surface of the sheet, and propagated across and then through the metal until it fractured. By turning this pattern in the metal, all the micro cracks followed the "valleys" of the swirls until they found another one at 90 degrees, and then stopped. That is the theory, and in practice it actually works, although to a limited extent. In modern times it tends to be used for its decorative properties, although doing it perfectly evenly and repeatably is very hard. (I know, I've tried). hth N -- Nigel Cheffers-Heard photography + design tel: +44 (0)1392 87 58 57 fax: +44 (0)1392 87 74 97 mobile: 0771 261 4514 nigelch@cheffers.co.uk www.cheffers.co.uk Laburnums, Bridge Hill Topsham, Exeter EX3 0QQ, UK ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2002 11:14:50 +0000 From: Paul Thompson To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: WWI digest 4019 Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.0.20020101111339.00a5f860@pop.xs4all.nl> Dear All, Happy New Year (belated since my ISP went out yesterday evening and just came back on).
