I've got another DVII question. There's a sheet of fabric seperating the cockpit area from the rear fuselage. I was going to guess that they used lozenge fabric for it, but a photo in the Windsock Datafile reveals that it is a light coloured plain fabric. Is natural linen a good guess ? I doubt I'm alone in feeling an odd sense of relief in getting that nasty furball of a Year 2001 behind us. 112 days ago, I never would have thought I'd actually welcome the year I'll turn 40 in with such sentiments, but there it is. Here are some things I'd like to see in my mailbox sometime this year: 1. The Hi-Tech AEG G.IV (like, hurry up already!) 2. A Datafile on the Breguet 14 (so I can finally work up the confidence to build THAT Hi-Tech kit!) 3. An affordable 1/48 injection Gotha kit up to current industry standards (hey, I can dream, right?) 4. Ditto Handley/Page 0/400 5. Eduard coming out with a 1/48 Camel and/or Se5a 6. The Classic Airframes SM.79 (sorry, ot, but I couldn't stop myself from typing that!) ******************** > Bucky, if you're listening, you do wonderful work. > the writing ain't bad, either.... > > Ken > Thanks, dahhhlink. It's my day job. ******************** > I have Photoshop 6 program and use it for general work, but do not > have the ability to change each of 5 colors in a lozenge decal sheet. > > > Don't try to print lozenge decal from Photoshop (if this is, in fact, what you're thinking of doing). A jpeg lozenge swatch may look OK on the monitor, but out of the printer, lines are going to be more jagged than John Belushi on espresso. My suggestion is to use Illustrator, which employs "rasterization" in rendering graphics. I'm not sure of the exact technology, but I think jpeg, etc. is based on pixels. It builds up graphics like its using electronic mosaic tiles. You can see this at work if you magnify a jpeg file. Lots of blocky lines, smudged edges. Raster-based apps, however, render graphics mathematically. No matter how much you magnify something on your monitor, your graphic will always have hard edges. In other words, line definition quality in your finished decal, etc., will be determined by the dpi capability of your printer. For the past year I've been experimenting with making lozenge on my ALPS 5500P. A nice machine, which can get up to 2400 dpi. Because of a happy idiosyncrasy in the printing process, the finished decals have a surface which looks EXACTLY like fabric weave in 1/48 scale. In other words, perfect for lozenge. btw, I decided to buy the ALPS when I couldn't find lozenge in the stores or online anymore. ******************** Hans, RE: your Albatros D.II masking worries: Why does the tail of your machine have to be matte? Other than tire rubber, perhaps, most OT surfaces (at least in 1/48) should have an eggshell finish. Certainly doped fabric should. I don't think there should be that much difference, sheen-wise, between a varnished fuselage and doped fabric. If you MUST make that tail matte, here's what I would do: Go ahead and leave everything gloss until your decals have set. Then seal them in with one more layer of gloss. I might want to use something industrial strength. Handbrushed Future comes to mind here. After that has cured, use an EXTREMELY low-tac artists masking tape to mask off the area of laminated wood in the vicinity of the tail. Then schpritz lightly with matte clear. Now, you have the problem of having half your tail cross matte and the other gloss, right? Well, you should be able to even the gloss out by handbrushing some gloss onto the cross areas on the tail. I don't think you really have sweat going out of the lines, etc. It will hardly be noticeable. Good luck (I'm right behind you with my own D.II! Looking at Bob L.'s work motivated me!) ******************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 17:47:08 -0800 From: "Bob Pearson" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: What we did on New Years Eve.. I wish to complete in 2001 a resin and vacuum kit. I have candidates I just need to follow through. I also wish to scratchbuild a major part of a model like a fuselage or wings. Thanks to this lists enthusiasm and knowledge my skills have continued to increase, two days ago I did a wood job on a Phonix in watercolours that I am mightily impressed with. Something that wouldnt have been achieved without the selfless knowledge swapping that occurs on this list. In 2001 my best completed model was the Belgian EE N11. It is one of my favourites, it was the first I used washes on for the engines and did some mild weathering. It looks excellent in worn French CDL and warm Belgian roundals. Looking forward in 2002 to create something even better.
