Message-ID: Friends, this belongs to the sad part of WW1, but Nigel expressed interest into details about the woman who got excecuted by the Germans at the station of Arlon so I will tell you what I found: During the battle for Rossignol, French troops occupied a nearby factory and its environnement. I still don't know what was produced in that factory, but it belonged to the industrial family of Mr. and Mrs. Hurieaux. There was a fierce fight between the French and the Germans but as the French got aware of the Germans encircling the factory, they retrieved and left the factory to the enemy. As the Germans entered the mansion of the Hurieaux family, they only found the parents and their three 5, 7, and 9 year old children. The French had all gone. "You shot at us!" the yelled. Then they took the parents with them, leaving the frightened kids in the basement of the mansion. They took the parents to a big meadow just on the other side of the road, opposite to the mansion and the factory. From there they had to watch the Germans plundering the mansion and setting the factory on fire. That meadow was the place where the Germans also brought the captured Frenchmen to - the place today known as the "Camp of Misery" that I mentionned in my earlier mail about the topic. Mr. Alfred Hurieaux and his wife Marie was executed in Arlon simply because the Germans claimed Franc-Tireurs having shot at them from their factory. In fact, it was regular French troops that shot at the Germans, retrieving from the location maybe before the Germans could identify them, but this is unlikely. Like both, Mr. and Mrs. Hurieaux got executed, they left three orphans. The children was later adopted by the family of Lucien Beckers-Héger from Uccle. As the night fell, the Germans knew no other means to illuminate the place for better surveillance than setting the house of the Dewez-Moreau family on fire - a practice they used many times to illuminate important places, regardless of the families who lost all of their belongings in that way. That house was closest to the meadow where they kept the POWs and the civilians. The Dewez-Moreau family was a young couple with a newborn baby that got baptized August 21, the day before the battle. The 22nd, the family had to escape. Passing via Suxy, Chassepierre and Carignan they went to France. Providence watched over the young mother and her child - it was in June of 1916 as the people of Rossignol learned that both, mother and child was going well. But nothing is mentionned about the fate of the father. Perhaps he became one of the many volunteers who enlisted to the French Army to fight against the "Boches"? The rampaging Germans plundered and burned many houses in the days following the battle. And they came up with most rediculous reasons to accuse the civilians. The Condrotte-Blasen family for example: As the battle raged, the family searched for shelter in the basement of their house. After having spend 5 hours there, they eventually decided to go to the house of Mrs. Condrotte's brother because they believed his house - that was located out of the village - was safe from the German artillery bombardment. Being there for only one hour, they saw Germans approaching. They first knocked at the door of the house, then they broke it to enter and search the house. They found all of the inhabitants in the basement, on their knees, praying. Immediately they separated the men from the women, asking the owner of the house to step forward and say his name. Then they tied him up, doing the same to the other three male inhabitants. An officer yelled: "On the wall, everybody! Ah, you gave the French to drink - well, for this you all will be executed!" The women crying for mercy, tried to convince the Germans that the men was innocent, but nothing helped. They then searched the men. One soldier nearly strangled Mrs. Condrotte's son Georges as he grabbed him tightly by his neck, shaking him badly. As they found nothing at the men, they pretend weapons being hidden in the house. The owner told them no such things ever was in his house but they did not believe him, searching the house in every corner. After they finished their search and found nothing, they untied the men, telling everybody to return home quickly... The day of the battle, not a single civilian was executed, but the day after, the Germans systematically separated the men and boys from the women, gathering them at various places before briging the selected ones to the Camp of Misery. Among them, they also took the husband, two sons and two sons-in-law of Mrs. Condrotte. She never saw them anymore as the got executed in Arlon a few days later. On tomorrow I will go to a historical place regarding this matter because we plan to visit the Christmas fair in the center of Luxembourg City. There at the place where the fair is held - the "Place d'Armes" - on the terrace of the "Café du Commerce" the German Colonel von Tessmar sat at a table together with other two other German officers as he received the news of the captured civilians. The orderly who brought the message informed him of about 120 civilians being brought to Arlon. Von Tessmar asked if they have enough railcars in Arlon and the orderly denied. Then von Tessmar said to telegraph to Trier for they will send more railcars. The orderly saluted and went away. Von Tessmar exchanged a few words with the other officers, then he ordered a waiter to call the man back but before the waiter reacted he called him back himself. He told him that really too much is bothered about such a bunch of Franc-Tireurs. In German he said "Was machen sie so viele Geschichten?". He said they should be executed right at the place. After that, von Tessmar went back to the "Hotel Continental" where he resided. To the manager of the Hotel - he nicknamed her "Kratzbürste" (means she was vicious) - he said: "Madam, I would like to invite you to a very special event. On tomorrow I will have 120 Belgians to be executed in Arlon." Well, the people had been brought to Arlon by train, in freight cars, like the Germans transported the Jews to the Konzentration Camps a few decades later. They had spend all the time from late August 23 'til the morning of August 26th in the cars without food. After the order arrived in Arlon to execute them, they was taken out of the cars and put on the wall of the Schoppach bridge by ten. The first group was brought to the place at about 10.00am. As the bodies of the first groups laid on a heap, the next ones had to climb onto the fallen for their execution. After each group being shot, the commading officer - a certain Feldwebel Sonntag - discharged his revolver onto the fallen before the next group arrived. Between the execution of each of the groups, about 10-15min passed. The whole carnage needed more than two hours to finish. Mrs. Hurieaux was among the last group. It is sounding very patriotic but it is said Mrs. Marie Hurieaux walked to the place upright. As the Germans took aim, she lift up her hand, shouting "Vive la France! Vive la Belg..." before she fell. A truck driver of the Colas-Maass Company eyewittnessed this. He also eyewittnessed the Germans turning the dead bodies to search them. They had orderd him to load the dead bodies onto his truck and bring them to the cemetary, but the man refused to "touch his own blood" like he expressed himself. The Germans did not insist, but ordered Arlonian workers to organize the funeral transport then. It was a dull, rainy day as this all happened... I have a BM N.11 , The paper that comes with it says it's number 500 something out of 1500. Chris Gannon has sold out of several runs. With 250 List members including Lurkers, (Hi Lurkers :-),That would mean 6 identical BM kits each to account for a run. Some of us might be well off enough to afford that, but not me. I have something like 150 unbuilt kits I have heard some list members have over 1000. Even if all had 1000 kits on the shelf that would account for 250 of the many hundreds of thousand WWI kits produced world wide over the past several years. My point is we are a very small, albeit highly vocal, segment of WWI builders who are in turn a small but growing corner of a very large hobby. This isn't a put down of the List but rather an idea of just how many WWI modelers there are out there. I always find it a hard choice whether to buy a kit off the shelf to encourage the shop owner to stock more or leave it there for someone else to try. Its a bummer when a kit I had my eye on disappears by the time I show up with cash in hand but it also means another WWI kit is in somebody's "to build" stack. sp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 07:16:25 -0800 (PST) From: Matt Bittner To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Availability of Eduard releases was:: Ho, Ho, ho, bah! humbug!
