That being said, I have seen no evidence for ply reinforcement on the Ni 11/16, except for one photo of a stripped 16, which appears to have had a play panel from the firewall to about half-way back to the cockpit. This area may also, or alternatively, had an aluminum sheet facing. There would appear to be some necessity, however, for some side-wall strengthening, if only to attach (rivet?) the cowl cheeks. As an aside, do note that Eduard neglect to mold the oil and fuel filler caps on the cowl and fore decking, respectively. I can see obvious differences in the structure of the seat/joystick/aileron mechanism in the photo's from Windsock vol 5 nos 3 + 4, but I've no idea about the cockpit sides. Any answers Matt ? Technically superior to the vast majority of the snapshots in most printed references, crash photos such as this often provide invaluable information not visible in conventional views. How often are the details of the highly reflective wings often obscured by glare, or entirely out of the frame, for that matter. I must respectfully disagree with the knowledgeable Volker. The straight rear edge of the rudder appears to me to be diagnostic for a D. III--the offset rudder not being at odds with this identification, as previously noted--and the fuselage stripes definitely seem to take on a flatter line along the fuselage side appropriate to the slab-sided D. III. Additionally, I am not convinced that the late-style Balkenkreuz are factory applied, as at least to these eyes, there does appear to be a border around the port insignia that could accommodate the usual Iron Cross. (Is there any evidence for Albatros being delivered with Balkenkreuz?) Finally, given their (dark) gray values, blue seems quite unlikely for any of the striped markings. Regards, Stefen ___________ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 14:41:00 +0800 From: Volker Haeusler To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: RE: Interesting photo of Albatros in ditch Message-ID: Diego just said: "I wish I would have the Albatros fighter special here. I guess that the differences with earlņy and late D.IIIs were offset radiators and different control wire runs. OAW adopted the rounded rudder and in really late D.III there was printed fabric on the wings too. Remember that he D.III was still being made after the D.V was operational and kept in use to the war's end. There are D.III with reinforced V struts too." Absolutely right so, the radiator only shows itīs either an OAW or a late Albatros (past 2200/17) D III. Too, the D III and the D Va all had the same aileron control system (with the wires running through the lower wings). Only the D V was different, with the controls in the upper system only. The photo just shows the control wires (beind the V strut on the port wing), so the a/c is definitely no D V. I guess itīs a D Va, judging from the layout of the cabane stuts (those on the D III had a slightly "straighter" front strut) and on the fuselage/tailplane junction. The markings look very odd to me. They are *very* similar to the Jasta 6 markings, when this squadron was flying D IIIīs and D Vīs ), but that does not fit to the late style Balkenkreuze and the time this photo was taken (obviously late spring/ summer ī18, judging from the vegetation). At that time Jasta 6 did no longer fly the Albatros. Other options could be Jasta 76b (if the stripes were blue) or Jasta 80b (if the stripes were black - more probable, I think). Iīm not aware of any other Jasta flying D Vaīs at that time that had a similar layout of chordwise stripes on the tailplane (Jasta 71, for example, also used chordwise stripes, but they were different in arrangement). Thatīs obviously under the assumption that the tailplane stripes are a unit marking. Too, it might be an ex Jasta 6 a/c used by a school etc. Volker ---------------------------------------------------- Sign Up for NetZero Platinum Today Only $9.95 per month! http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=platinum&refcd=PT97 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 16:19:59 +0000 From: "Brent Theobald" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Four Colour Lozenge Message-ID: Tony, If painting lozenge is fun for you then great. The structure up front the girder of the Nieuport 11 fuselage has a metal frame from wich the engine hangs. At its sides, there are vertical members wich are wider than the rest, sort of a plank with a round metal fixture at the vortex of the shape of these parts (these are faintly drawn on the lower profile at http://mars.ark.com/~mdf/N_11d.html). You all know, Christmas is coming, and I thought of doing something special for the occasion. Then came to my mind the idea of a "secret friend". It's a game very popular in Brazil, and I'm sure it's found also in many other countries, but for those who don't know what is it, I'll explain. Usually it's done in family, or among work or school friends. Small pieces of paper have the names of all those interested in taking part. Each one picks one paper, and the name found there is his/her "secret friend". So, just before Christmas, all secret friends are revealed in a party and gifts exchanged. The biggest problem is, well, how to do it online? I found a website in Portuguese which can do this. Although quite "primitive", I believe it works. I made a little test. So, when we find out who is our friend, we can start contacting him/her to know what he wants (OT gifts of course). Last year, in another list's "secret friend", someone created an e-mail account like marciossecretfriend@hotmail.com and e-mailed me asking my address and gift suggestions. I can organize the whole thing, but first I want to hear you about the idea. Is it good? Was it already done before? What problems may appear in your opinion? Do you have another suggestion for an online "secret friend"? Let's first decide whether we will do it, and only then I'll start collecting names (if we accept the suggestion). I'm waiting for answers (off-list if you prefer)!
