Message-ID: The main thing about British claims was the morale boost it gave everyone involved. Saying that they were a 'gross exaggeration' does everyone involved a mis-service. The claims were, in most cases, made in all honesty and reflected a personal victory to those involved, whether by actually destroying an aircraft, or forcing it to flee. Except for Bishop's aerodrome raid, British claims were not accepted on the basis of the pilot's say-so alone, it would have to be supported by another pilot, or ground report. Bishop's claims were accepted by a very over-zealous OC, Scott, who was very much concerned with promoting his squadron as the best on the front and would stop at almost nothing to gain recognition to it. British pilots could gain 'shared' victories, while USAS pilots would all get a full victory to all involved. Regards, Bob Pearson Peter writes. .. >> The British claims were mostly gross exaggerations. A man's >> word that he >> shot down an airplane was enough. Read "Bloody April, Black >September" for a disquieting look at how few RFC, AFC and USAS claims result >in a wrecked aircraft. That's right, but also read sources like the contemporary GP Neumann's History of the German Air Service to see how a 2-seater put down with bullets in the engine is flying again the next day with a new engine. Kill? Lets face it, if you are in friendly territory and you've taken hits, what is more sensible than breaking off and landing for repair. You don't have that option if you are in a DH4 100 miles behind German lines. This is an inescapable corollary of the fact that most of the air fighting took place deep inside German territory. The "ooc" and "forced down" categories were partly designed to recognise the fact that a machine could be forced down with damage but could well fly again. Doubtless very many mistakes were recorded but this system seems a fairer way to encourage allied pilots' success than any other I can think of. Why do we have to have these stupid "gross exaggeration" messages again. We've been all through this before. You can try to rewrite history a century later but you won't change the events. The records are as they are, and a lot better interpreted at the time than looking backwards now with 21st century anachronisms. This is like the arguments for rewriting Mozart's Requiem again. When Mozart died with the work incomplete, who could be better to finish it than his pupil Sussmeyer, to whom he had dictated his intentions. Yet we get learned musicologists from Milwaukee to Liverpool to Sydney who think they can do better today (after growing up with the Beatles, punk, heavy metal, Philip Glass....)! I call it a a royal pain in the posterior. I spent 3 hours last night tying to get this piece to fit correctly on the Revell kit I'm trying to turn into a re-worked set of masters. Probably they called it an exhaust chanel. sp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 13:53:51 From: "Michael Kendix" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Subject: Re: Albatros rigging question Message-ID: >From: Shane Weier >All these formula things tend to fall down in the face of the way the > >human mind works. Why - >the mind knows that the detail *must* be there (wood >does have grain >y'know) and if it isn't then the model won't look >right. Exactly. I think that when you build a model, you're trying to send a message about what is going on. The mind reacts to detail, even though "mathematically", it shouldn't be there. Same thing goes for the so-called "scale effect" of glossiness and colour brightness. Yes, a new machines in WWI was fairly glossy - a trip to Hendon Aerodrome Museum shows this. But if you dip your 1/48th or worse, a 1/72nd scale model, in Future - the mind says "Plastic" rather than "Canvas". Slavishly matching paint chips or lozenge fabric to paint colours or decals on your model results in the same. So, we like to do things like put in wood grain and draw in panel lines. Of course, if you overdo it, the panel lines will look like they were drawn with a 3B pencil, as I have found to my cost. It's an art form, not a science; which is why different modellers' interpretation of the same aeroplane can look equally valid but quite different. Message-ID: <47637867E285D5118FAE00B0D0D1C976BF9C67@TECOM03E> Good Morning All, Not to drag this thread out too long, but as I slowly approach the assembly phase of my DML Dr. 1 I have begun to visualize the build sequence in my mind, and during several "Dry Fit" attempts. My approach to affixing the wings will be to first begin with the interplane struts between the lower and mid wing. 1) I plan on using a thin coat of white glue on the lower alignment tab into the lower wing first, then position the mid wing and line everything up by sight. 2) After this dries the interplane struts should be solid enough to "stand" on their own attached to the lower wing. I then plan on going back around the outer edge with a fine brass wire in a piece of dowel rod to apply a thin line of ZAP super thin CA. Since the strut is held in place by the white glue, I see no need for a kicker, and hope to get a solid bond by letting the CA cure for about an hour before moving on. 3) Next step is to attach the mid wing to the fuselage, and then running a bead of CA around the join of the interplane strut and the mid wing. 4) Repeat the white glue process for the interplane struts between the mid wing and the upper wing, and after that dries, applying CA to the midwing joins. 5) Then I will white glue the cabines into the UPPER wing getting the proper alignment with the cowling and the fuselage, and after drying, CA the cabines to the upper wing. 6) Then I plan to flip the bird upside down on the top wing and CA the interplane struts to the upper wing, and the cabines to the cowling and fuselage. May be a bit tedious, but I think it's the best way to get a visually appealing alignment. Hopefully Lance's jig will assist in holding everything together during the white glue drying process. What Hans said. If the eye can't tell its crooked, then its straight. I use Zap Plasti-zap CA as it gives a little wiggle time. Applicators are needles and wires of various sizes stuck in bamboo handles. Same applicator for kicker only a little bigger. Depending on the model, stick the cabaines or mainplanes on first. Then slap on the top wing and fit &fiddle the remaining struts in place. I've never used purpose built jigs as I'm not craftsman, (or patient), enough to make and use them effectively. A note on kicker: A little on the end of an applicator held close to the joint and the fumes blown gently over the joint will accelerate the reaction without chancing that the kicker will mess up a finish as it can in direct application of the liquid. sp > John, > hmmmmm... > hard to believe, I never used jigs. Message-ID: Hi Folks, I have been using the glue and fiddle method myself and am starting to wonder if this isn't the easiest way. The only digression is that I have been using 5 minute Expoxy for the main interplane struts...Once this starts to cure, I fiddle the wing into its final resting place, let it dry overnite and then put the cabane or any smaller struts in place. I'm starting to think that a jig may be suitable for larger wings...Still planning on building a jig.... Message-ID: All of the ideas sound good. If the cabin struts are cast as a unit (not separate struts), I approach this step from the other direction. The lower wing is glued in place first. I then glue the cabins to the upper wing with liquid cement (has more working time than CA) then glue them to the fuselage. While the cement is setting up, I can fiddle with the alignment, looking down and from the front. When this has set up, I reinforce the joint with CA, then pop the main struts in place and glue them in with TenX or CA. I am planning to build an Oeffag type H (A11) checzmaster resin.I want to get some bibliography before building it. O碈onnors "Air aces of AH.." book have some scarce pictures of the aircraft. Hikoki book points two references: Schupitas "kuk Seeflieger" and Hauke "die Fluzeuge..". Wich is more accurate?. Is there any cockpit pictures?. How can I get it?. Schupitas seems to be difficult to find in bookstores. Is there a bookstore in web where to get it?. Regards ----------------------------------------- Santiago Mart韓 Alfageme Avda. It ought to make you feel better. Mere mortals like ourselves ought to be able to rig models in the massive 1/72, or Bittner scale. This is really an incredible model. http://www.artofthesea.com/images/mcafferty/Mcaffrey_USSconst_lg.jpg Enjoy! Message-ID: Howdy! I am still partial to the Blue Tack method. It is easily adjustable yet strong. The only time I don't use it is on lozenged decal wings. I spend so much time decaling them I can't risk the Blue Tack pulling the decals off. That being said my 4 year old daughter and I banged out an ot Japanese biplane/seaplane last night. I just filled the holes in the top wing for the struts with Pro-Weld and stuck the struts in. When those were dry-ish I repeated the procedure on the bottom wing and installed the top wing. Since everything was still a little melty I could squish it around and make everything right. The model has survived an evening flying around the house, buzzed Mom a few times (very hazardous) and several water landings in the tub. We'll see if it lives until Show and Tell at school on Friday. I'll be amazed if it survives until Saturday. Anyhow... Would I do it this way with one of my more "serious" models? Probably not, but the model is definately strong enough. Heck, we built the whole thing in less than 30 minutes... Good fun! Later!
