Peter: Given the relatively small amount of on topic stuff in the NASM/Garber facility, I am glad we have it in DC but it would have been nice to have it restored to its WWI colours rather than the gaudy red and white of its Hollywood experience. They should have a possibility to connect up to their online catalogue and check what is in stock. Don`t think it is room for them to have all the special items in the Colindale shop, next time I might send a list in advance for the items I want to look at. The Aviation Bookshop - they have a lot of old and new magazines and books that are hard to get hold of, always worth a visit. It is on the Northern line but not the branch to Colindale, so it is neccessary to go to Camden and then back-track. The RAF Museum - the exhibition covering first part of WW1 was closed, and a lot of other maintenance going on so some items were not visible while other had been moved so I got photos from new angles. Didn`t see anything realy new that was OT except for some engines. Like the way they present the aircraft, both a generic history on the type and a detailed one describing the exhibited aircraft giving information of what parts that are original and if it has been rebuilt from a number of wrecks. I didn`t get into the BoB hall, it was closed for special arrangement for the last two hours, it was on a sign I had noted the staff was setting up next to the main enterance, but I didn`t read it until later. The FAA Museum - I followed their instructions on how to get there, train to Sherbourne and a taxi to the Museum (10GBP). Most of the early aircraft are replicas, they are placed in dioramas. I was mainly interested in the Sopwith Baby, it is OK with the fence on one side, but why there is a brick-wall (made in plastic) that I can hardly peek over on two sides is beyond my understanding. Maintenance was being undertaken there as well, so I didn`t get into the room with the original Short 184 fuselage etc. There is a lot of WW2 and later stuff there as well, the "Carrier" experience is very well made, the helicopter flight felt real to me. It is possible to look into the restoration room, but the glass around is highly reflective and I don`t think it is possible to get decent photos. There is a stripped WW1 aircraft hanging in the Concorde hall, don`t know if my camera gear was good enough for getting pictures of it. If going to either of the museums, bring plenty of 400ASA film and the strongest flash you can get for your camera. When on Museums, I visited the NTM here in Oslo today and found that the Etrich Rumpler Taube had been removed and replaced with a pre-WW1 Deperdussin instead. The Taube has gone to Gardermoen (near Oslo airport) for refurbishing and display with Farman F-46 and BE2e. Will try to make a few detail photos of the Taube some time later.
