D.VII Finish? Message-ID: Hi Stephen, Very good observations. --Per typical Fokker practice, prototype machines V.9 and 11/1 are CDL with bare metal cowlings and dark (olive?) struts and axle wing (p. 6 S/S, p. 2, DF 9). I concur. --V.11/2 (p. 3, DF) retains CDL wheel covers and unpainted engine panels but is now brush painted with light-colored interplane struts. Check. --In two views of what may be the same unserialed early (pre?) production machine (p. 9 S/S, p. 4 DF), perhaps V.11 or 18, the finish is as V.11/2 above. I agree. The upper cowlings seem to confirm this. --Machine 353/18 also retains the V.11/2 scheme, but with two small detail differences: the landing gear struts and wheel covers are light gray--perhaps underside blue--the tonality of which appears match that of the interplane struts. (The finish is of further interest for the retention of the olive wings, as printed fabric appears as early as serial 244/18.) You state, "retention of olive wings", are you certain about this? This doesn't seem possible to me. I don't recall any D.VII's having olive wings, (except perhaps the p鈚閑 on white field aircraft with no serial number, which is probably 227 - 230). Production aircraft with an olive fuselage, yes, but not wings. --Airframe 507/18 p. 11 S/S), a fully covered in printed favric, nonetheless appears to retain natural metal engine panes, as suggested by the tonal difference compared with the interplane struts. I have always wondered why Fokker took a number of shots of this aircraft. I have thought there must be something different or "special" about it, but have not been able to spot anything. The plane is less guns in the photo, so it's hard to say if the cowlings may yet need to be painted. Secondary sources, however, are at odds with these photos. RLR's caption (p. 28) to his rear cover profile of an early brush-painted machine in the DF states "Undersurfaces are light turquoise...Forward fuselage metal panels and struts in pale grey," although the color choices are a little ambiguous with respect to the use of gray and turquoise. Dan-San Abbott, in a private communication, is also adamant about the use of pale (greenish) gray on struts and metal areas. Nonetheless, early D.VII finishes certainly seem, to me at least, to bear significant commonalities with those of Dr. I's, and at least those photographs referred to above suggest that at least some machines were delivered with unpainted forward metal areas, olive center section struts, and light interplane struts whose color identity may be in doubt. There is no question of the very early D.VII's being finished in the same style of Dr.I's. They were coming off the "assembly line" at the same time. The acceptance sheets bear this out. I love to study the subtle differences in the application of the various national markings with the first D.VII's as well as the variation in finishing. I swear that 244/18 has "diamond arm" p鈚閑 crosses in the photo as shown in the Fokker Anthology. Look at the rudder as well as the fuselage. I thought it was the lens of the camera, but I'm not so sure, (food for thought). Was there an Idflieg order that would have changed the use of underside blue on strut work from the turquoise of triplanes to the pale gray of the biplane? Grounds for Grosz or Abbott. Make sure to look at the Anthology's. I will attempt to dig into this further. If you have any other insights, please share them. Best, Dave W. Citation of additional reference photographs bearing on this question will be appreciated. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 12:12:36 +1000 From: Neil.Eddy@dhs.vic.gov.au To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Pegasus Poll Message-ID: Witold; Not everyone is experienced in resin. They provide decal paper and fixatives for ALPS, Laser, and ink jet printers. Has anyone had experience with the Inkjet system packs? - They consist of white or clear decal paper, and a fixative for spraying the image after printing. Also if anyone has, do they take setting solutions etc.? I'm asking because if Listees experiences have been positive, I'll probably buy a set. I've just had a look at the above link to jimshobbies and succumbed to a bad attack of nostalgia. I note that jim has several "Sterling" models on his list including the "Ringmaster". In my garage there's barely room for the car as it contains among other things a Ringmaster...a Kenhi Cougar (54" stunt)...a "Peppy Trainer (air trails plans)...a "Berkeley models Pitts Special"...a 36" Zero and 30" V/S Corsair(Jap kits)... a scratchbuilt P-51...a B class teamracer own design... 4 combat 'bombs' and a 72" span towline glider...plus 17 engines including 2 Fox 29's, Fox 35, OS 35, Mills.75, 2 Aussie Taipans 2.5 diesels, a Aussie Sabre 49, Arden 19 etc. etc. The youngest of all the above is over 40 years old. They are mostly in good nick and one day I'v promised myself before I finally take off on my last circuit I'll have a go at flying some of 'em.Several of the above were built for my kids but after a circuit or two, like most kids of their era they were lured away initially by the 'Idiot Box' and later on by the roar of motorbikes. So I remained hoping that perhaps the Grandkids would be interested but they are scattered around Aust. with a couple in LA. To keep this somewhere near OT also have a Comet Alb D3, Guillows Rumpler, SE5a and just finished a Dr.1. with a DH4 on the building board. Cheers Jim P. http://briefcase.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo!
