Message-ID: If anyone has been wondering what on earth the Aussie contingent has been gibbering about recently, I will try to explain. It came to be that a team from where Shane lives beat a team from where Neil lives in the final of a hybrid version of football played only in Australia. It seems that when the convicts and squatters wanted to play football there were people who knew some rugby rules and others who knew some Irish football rules, these rules were combined resulting in a brawling and rather violent code of football. The term "to beat another side" literally means to batter them. A very infamous final some 25 years ago saw 3 of Dandenong's star players carried off the ground on stretchers before the referee had even blown his whistle to start the game, so the announcement on the evening news that Dandenong had been beaten by Port Melbourne surprised no-one. It is a strange game in that players are free to roam the field without ever being called offside, the fullback doesn't kick for goal, a goal can be kicked without first scoring a try, if the kicker misses the goal posts he can still score points, there are ruckmen who never ruck the ball and the game is started with a lineout between only two players in the centre of the ground. Like I said, a very strange game. By definition - Rugby Union is gentlemen playing a gentleman's game. Rugby League is thugs trying to be gentlemen. Aussie Rules is very simply thugs just being thugs. To conclude on topic, it is reported that Aussie Rules Football was played in Europe by Australian troops during WW1 which convinced an already wondering world that we really were a crazy nation.
