I actually got him from Ray Rimmell, who was selling off a stack of (presumably ex-review) accessories, so I'm not sure how much he costs. I gave Ray 30 quid for a bagfull of figures. PE, resin and metal bits. I'd forgotten that I used the HiTech elevators and ailerons, from this source, on Jacobs Dr1. Just joking about the brass, he's a 1/48 resin character with a Galloise fag in his hand - In the competition, I thought of making him stand in a pool of petrol leaking from the SPAD - but then thought that would probably still be safer than flying the bloody thing. He also adds a couple of non aces like Holden (4) and Hay (3). It isnt up to Osprey quality though but for $20AUD ($10USD) who is going to argue. Above the Trenches has a similar amount of bio information for each ace. I tend to use it for reference. About the only thing Newtons book has over ATT is the photos, plus it covers all the WWII Australian aces but I am not really interested in that. There is a similar style book, "Flying Squadrons of the Australian Defence Force" which is also a good introduction to the Squadrons of the AFC and RAAF. cam AFC - [soon] ______________________________________________________________ Get Your Free E-mail at http://www.prontomail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Oct 2001 12:12:35 From: "Michael Kendix" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Cooo-eee...again No2 Message-ID: >From: "Ross Moorhouse" > >I have thought of building the SMER 504. $10 sounds ok. I think this would be a valuable resource for all. Being able to compare the products of various manufacturers side by side would be very helpful for everyone to employ "Dicta Ira". The key is to be sure all the images are scanned on the same scanner, so there is no variation in the interpretation of colors. Apples to apples as it were. Message-ID: <002d01c14b46$9873bbc0$1e67f4d1@stefenk> Sat, 29 Sep 2001 Scott King replied with three conjectural scenarios: (1) Scenario - Paint underside and return area first, with turquoise, return area slightly oversize, apply 1" masking tape along longeron, then apply olive streaking, and lastly remove 1" tape leaving nice 1" turquoise border. ---This is rather what I now suspect, except without the use of masking tape and involving a rather broad overlap of the excess turquoise/sky blue. Steve Perry suggested off-List that sign painters/letterers use a 'shield' tool in their work to mask areas, and something like this would be the most efficient. As Dan-San Abboott reminded me elsewhere, there was another 20 feet of edging around the tailplane--some 50 feet of edging in all for each airframe. Taping all these surfaces seems rather too time-consuming. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire tail surface weren't doped with the sky color. The other two options again seem too time-consuming. You can see the seat and inside(plus more) of a Fokker E-V/D-VIII under my photos on the site. http://www.wwi-models.org/ Seat was "Brown leather" with the belt "harness" almost white. Difficult to explain. It can be seen in the photos as well I took one directly into the open nose of a E-V/D-VIII a couple years ago and you can see the color of the plywood panels, which were varnished inside, and the interior of the lozenge material. The "dope" soaked through and it was slightly glossy. Also notice the control column extending below the fuselage. Some plans do not show that very well. The plane (replica) was made using original WW I documentation and it is (now) on display at the Fort Rucker, Alabama Museum. For example, Hans Schultz' J.18 Fokker D.VII--the British report on this captured aeroplane stated the loz was visible beneath the red paint on the wings. At the moment I am using the abysmal old, old Superscale loz to cover a Fokker D.VIII which will then be overpainted to represent a D.VIII used by Udet for stunt work after the war. Any suggestions? Also, doing the Blue Water Navy kit of the U-35 - really nice kit, really lousy instructions. Anybody got suggestions for paint mixtures? I've used the assumption that German colors pre-second unpleasantness were the same as WWI, and gotten the colors off the S&S chips, but I could use someone's match for RAL 7026 and 8013, if they got one - these aren't on the sites I know of with mixes.
