Nice to see you here Welcome from Poland -- Witold Kozakiewicz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 10:56:55 -0700 From: "Bob Pearson" To: ww1 mailing list Subject: Vegemite and Marmite explained Message-ID: <3BA688B500114FEE@mail.san.yahoo.com> (added by postmaster@mail.san.yahoo.com) Hi all, Home again .... all in all it was a most trying two weeks made good by the excellent company I met along the way. Ray Boorman met me in Vancouver and put me up for two days while we got together with various SMML members to dicuss those floaty things. Ray also introduced me to the wonder of Marmite .. salty axle grease does not begin to describe it. . however it did answer the question about those nasal accents common to the UK and Australia .. they are trying to talk with their throats costricted shut !!!!!!! Across the border where I met Chris B-R for breakfast and then another 31 hour bus ride south to Long Beach to hook up with RK. Had a nice (spaghetti, of course) dinner and then after looking at all of RK's cool stuff it was bedtime with plans to meet Rick Ewing at Chino in two days to head off to San Diego ... The world changed while I was in the process of waking up. .... suddenly some strange comments from the radio were entering my head .. crash, towers .. etc etc .. quickly the TV was turned on and what came to be refered to as "the Bob shaped dent' in the couch began to take shape. .. OTF was cancelled and I was interred at Casa Karr for the duration. Robert, Cia and Tony made my stay very enjoyable all things considered and I had many long talks with all three ... Tony also inspired me to add lighting to my 1/72 ship (he scratchbuilt a 1/24 RC yacht - tres cool). Cia baked a pile of cookies for me to take on the next leg, which was .. North to Seattle .. (not quite the ring of Alaska. . but oh well). The buses from LA to Seattle were full with every seat taken ... I sat with a driver who told me that all buses were running, but they had run out of drivers. All extra drivers were being used, but many were time-expired .. he could only drive 2.5 hours that day or get a $2000 fine. Chris and family met me there. Chris and I did a tour of Seattle area hobby shops where I picked up various tools and supplies that are unavailable here since my local shop's demise last year .. I also sold some of my CDs to two shops there .. so it worked out that I returned home with the same amount of money I left with. . how many people here can say they walked out of a hobby shop with more money then they went in with? My final day in Seattle was fun, I went for a ride-along with Chris' wife Ginger who is a police officer at the University - lots of time to talk without him there to interrupt :-) That night we met up with his regular Thursday night model buddies .. among whom I met John Amendola (sp?) of numerous box-top fame as well as IM contributors Jim Schubert and Norm Filer. Friday it was a drive up to Vancouver to catch the bus home .. It only took us about 15 minutes to get throught the border into Canada .. but, well ask Chris how long it took him to get back into the USA .... after a quick lunch I then spent the longest 6 hours of the trip waiting at the Vancouver bus station to head home. Luckily both buses to get home had at most 20 people, so I had a seat to myself all the way home. Having now experienced Greyhound travel in the US and Canada I can say the following applies - Canada has better buses and services, ther attendants will tell you what you need, but be very surly about it - The US on the whole has far friendlier attendants who are very polite when they tell you they can't help. Home to 178 messages (mostly spam), not the 2000 of last time - whew. All in all I am very thankful to the list members I met for the first time who put up with me for the past weeks ... Ray, RK, Chris. . thanks a lot guys. And I must also mention tom Cleaver, he also offered a place to stay if RK kicked me out .. none of these people had met me in person before this trip, so once again the list proves its hospitality. I'm about to enter the painting stage and I haven't yet mad my mind on which one it'll be. The IRAS book shows a profile of an Anasal in Czech markings but I wonder if the colours are correct because the true thing I was able to see at Prague is painted in a light greenish grey colour overall (cowl excepted) and the book depicts the fuselage as being natural plywood with flying surfaces in CDL. Then again this particular aircraft was used up to the 40's for teaching purposes (so the A-H book tells us) and it could well have been painted at a later stage. I would like either to do a Russian or an A-H machine. I know Windsock once published a feature on the Anasal. Could any of you with that particular issue check and let me know what they say about colours? There are VCR's available form all the major Japanese manufacturers which will play back from PAL or NTSC to PAL or NTSC televisions. Some also include SECAM though you have to look hard to find them. FWIW you'll certainly be able to play back those (ahem) graphic European videos, but the quality won't be as good as if you had a proper PAL TV because NTSC has 20% less lines of pixesl and correspondingly lower resolution (and poorer colour performance, but that's another issue!) Message-ID: <20010924000400.47973.qmail@web11107.mail.yahoo.com> Thanks Shane.
