That said, I would like to thank all on the list who have offered condolences and understanding in this tragic criminal attack on America. President Bush has said that there will be no distinction in response between those who carried out the attack and those who harbored them. If that is truly the response, then the next contact with many governments should go something like this: "You in the Mideast invented the phrase, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and its converse, "The friend of my enemy is my enemy." It is obvious from these and prior attacks that persons of your nations and authorities are acting on these phrases. If you continue to give any of these any type of shelter, the US will respond as the whole of your government is responsible for these and similar acts. "We are no longer looking for Understandings, Accommodations, or Protocols. There will cease to be any terrorist groups, period. Here is a list of your nationals that are suspected or indicted terrorists. You have twenty four hours to arrest them and bring them to open trials monitored by our allies or we will assume that you are supportive of their actions. You will also arrest their associates and any others they might lead you to as supporters. If we do not see such action taken, and must assume you are shielding them, your country will be at war with the United States of America with all that entails to your nation's population. Since there are a number of nations that require our attention, and we do not wish to suffer any additional major casualties, we will use all means in our arsenal, dependent on the level of responsibility we feel needs response and gauged by the public evidence of your country's popular opinion of the US. Those who hate us will not hate us any more for the destruction, but the survivors might have a little more circumspection. We await your answer." The next step might widen the discussion to other nations that have not totally reigned in terrorism. Of course, Ireland and the UK might find it somewhat amusing to receive one of these; but then, it would give them a final reason to round up all the three-letter armed groups in Northern Ireland on both sides. I think the vast majority of people living on that Emerald Isle would breath a huge sigh of relief that the petulant children were taken as just that and they were left to live in peace with one another. My angry, hurt, and frustrated US $0.02. I hope I have not offended anyone too seriously. .Mark. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 22:05:09 +0800 From: "Carol & David Solosy" To: "WW1 List" Subject: To our American friends Message-ID: The deeply disturbing news of the terrorist attacks on NY and Washington hit us here in Western Australia late on Tuesday night. Not many of us slept after that. Australia and America have always been the best of friends. As always, you can count on us to do whatever we can. The first thing we can do is give you a shoulder to cry on. I believe we are sending fire-fighters and blood. So far three Australians have been confirmed as killed. One in one of the WTC crash aircraft; one in one of the towers, and one in the Pentagon crash aircraft. This has indeed been a heinous crime committed against the people of the free world. Two years ago, almost to the day, when my wife and I were tourists in your wonderful country, we walked through the foyer of the WTC. We enjoyed the energy and friendliness of the Big Apple and its people. It's hard now to comprehend the enormity of what has happened. Today, our city traffic was driving with headlights on in broad daylight as a mark of respect for the casualties of this horror. Our thoughts and hearts are with you. Working at UNH I have a large 'community' of people that I know. The losses from the terrorist attacks are already becoming recognizable to me. Matt Lablanc - Geography Professor Emeritus, who I took a class from, was killed in one of the Trade Tower planes. Several other people from or related to UNH were also killed in the four aircraft attacks. Hopefully we'll get a resolution to this quickly so the nation can heal. As most of you know, I'm in Ohio to help with my ailing father. I'm still here, and won't get out at the earliest until tomorrow - probably later than that. I was in the airplane, doors were about to be closed when the airline "people" came through announcing that we would have to de-plane, then when we were in the terminal, that all flights have been cancelled. By the time I made it to the ticketing area (luckily I had only carry on baggage), the airport was closed, and they weren't letting *anyone* else near it. I ended up walking quite a ways to wait for my mom to come pick me up. It was weird, because while I was waiting for the plane, they had CNN on the TV, and I could see it was a "high-rise" on fire, but there was no sound, and I didn't think anything of it. Heavens! It also effected me another way because the USAF base I work on is shut down as well, although I'm not there to be effected directly. This is indeed a scary time. The author certainly forgot or ignored the Europeans who build the Airbus - the strongest competitor to the US aircraft industry. The reasons why the Airbus is a much demanded aircraft is its reliability, where US aircraft, especially Boeings had to fight a lot of technical problems in the past that cost them a large piece of the cake of the world market. On the military side the European aircraft industry builds the Tornado, the backbone of the German and British Air Force and I guess the Italians fly it as well. The French have their Mirages... So how the heck can this man write that only the US build aircrafts? That's rediculous! YES there are countries in the world that build equals to the Boeings - it are no Arabs but it are Europeans! > > > > Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on > > the > > moon? Just THINK of who would have walked the moon first if the Americans would not have had >>>Werner von Braun<<< on their side! Then THINK of where this man came from! He was no American but GERMAN who formerly build the V weapons for the Nazis! Without him, it would have been the Russians who walked the moon first. The Americans financed the moon programs, but the brains behind it was von Braun! And assigning cars to the Germans plus radios to the Japanese is as stupid as assigning Spaghetti to the Italians. Eacht nation produces many more other first class products than those just mentionned. Where would this world be without the merits of the French, the Italians and the many other nations not to forget about the Luxemburgish steel industry that holds a major part on the world market? Ever been aware that most German cars are build with steel made by ARBED - the Luxie steel company? > > > > When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down > > through > > age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When did the Americans build railroads in Germany and France? As far as I know history of the European railroads there was no Americans involved in its modernisation nor its planning. Rest assured that the little but rich Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg donates more money in percent of their GNP than most other countries in the world. Wherever disaster happens, our governement immediately frees large sums of money plus the population collects money and goods for the people. Saying that only the Americans help is a demostration of sheer ignorance of the rest of the world! > > > > Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned > > tired > > of hearing them get kicked around. Such statements like the above simply saddens me and angers me. > > > > This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the > > United > > States.
