My wife was away today as the news about the terror attacks made it around the world. I felt so shocked that I immediately send her an SMS message to tell her to listen to the radio news asap. As she got home again with the kids she was speechless. Like we all, she could not believe it and took it for some kind of an "independance day" story while she knew at the same time that this was no bad movie, but the horrible truth. Then she said that we cannot go on vacation there next year... I said to wait before taking final decisions... I looked at our little Mel who smiled so sweet, with her 22 months not knowing how cruel the world beyong her toys is... And I felt terrorized by the thoughts such a horror might happen to my little darling too... I felt even worse as I got aware of the many children who certainly lost their young lives in that act of barbarism today, while my little Mel now lies in her bed, peacefully sleeping to regain power for a new adventurous day full of wild screams, laughter and happyness with daddy, mummy and her big sister Anna-Katharina. Later my wife said if we gonna fly we will fly with El Al... I got upset, asking her if she's completely mad now, but then she said: "They have steel doors to their cockpits, protecting the crew from highjackers". But I told her that steel doors won't help if a suicide bomb sits next to us in the cabin... We still feel to shocked to think of a visit now. But I am sure we will return to the US, if not next year, then later. No terrorist will keep us away from our friends! with love to you all Gaston > On only one earlier post will I comment specifically: > Gaston, please don't cancel your visits to the US. A great movie, everyone should see it. At a certain moment, the German officer who takes care of a POW field in a castle talks with a French captain who is a prisioner there. Both come from noble origins, and both know that their war will be the last one fought with principles and chivalry. Later, the world will belong to commoners (did I write it right? It's the opposite of noble people) and war will be completely different. Also US pilots attacked convoys of German refugees in WWII. Still in Ex-Jugoslavia US pilots attacked convois of civilians... I think this always happens on all sides and was not always intended. It is just hard to identify friend or foe from a fast flying machine. As for pilots shooting pilots hanging on chutes, well that's something I know for sure that not only the Germans did. Think this way: The Germans committed incredible crimes on the Polish nation... If you had been one of the Polish pilots fighting on Allied side against the Germans you would certainly have done so because you wanted to fight for your country. Would you have let a German escaped on a chute only to shoot one of your friends down the next day - maybe? One of the nation that wanted to destroy YOUR nation? I would probably not! I would have felt deepest hatred against a nation that committed genocide in such a horrible way they did and every means to fight them would have been justified to me if it only served to restore freedom again. We were on the observation deck of the Empire State Building and looking at lower Manhattan as I pointed out the various landmarks, all dwarfed by those magnificent twin towers. I even took her photo with that landmark as a backdrop. I watched live on TV as the second airliner exploded into one of the towers. I watched live on TV as those buildings disintegrated. Watched the Pentagon burn and a crater in a Pennsylvania field. I had to call the college where I teach to say I couldn't make it to classes today as I was so sick that I could hardly think straight. I wasn't the only one. My disbelief turned to the most profound sadness I have ever felt. All those poor people on the planes, in the buildings, on the ground. The families. Our country. Sadness is turning to anger. Anger at the cowards who could even think to initiate an attack like this. How could people want to do this to unsuspecting, innocent civilians? 60 years ago a military target was attacked while the sailors and soldiers slept. Today, women and children were attacked while they just tried to live their daily lives. I want to see those responsible punished. Punished in a way that will bring some feeling of justice to those involved and to the rest people of the world that respect freedom. How can I ever look at those snapshots again? That fine day when things were OK and I could point out Ellis Island and Liberty standing on her island, right over there, just to the right of the towers. I have no idea what to think or do right now... Friends,

I know emotions are high right now. Mine certainly are. Let's remember the

terrible
act will not end democracy anywhere. I think we best carry on with our lives
as before. Otherwise the terrorists win.

Regards,

Richard

The number of injured must be incredible. John Biskupski ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 3708 **********************
