If the assembly plant was near Southampton, England, it might have been named for the Isle of Wight, which is directly across from Southampton on the south coast. Southampton and the Isle of Wight are separated by a strip of water called "The Solent". Isle of Wight is also famous for the 1970 concert that took place there (the English "Woodstock") featuring Jimi Hendrix et al. The latest take on this Jasta 11 bird (I know, because I built it) is the rest of the airframe was streaked. The thinking is a very heavy streaking, hence everyone thinking solid red up front. Chris Cato has a page with images from the US IPMS 2001 Nats. You can see my Tripe there. Unfortunately I can't post it anywhere else until I finish the other two Tripes and write the article for IM.
