Writing from home after a wonderful weekend in Campinas. More than 1000 kits, great for Brazilian standards. Lots of B***9s, Sp******s and, especially, P-4*s, the planes Brazilians flew in WWII. But the OT entries weren't disappointing. Let me tell you: 1/28 - A guy brought four kits: a Revell Dr.I's: 425/17 and 102/17. Also a Revell D.VII and a Rickenbacker Spad XIII, which got 3rd in the "1/32 and bigger - propellers" category. 1/48 - The category "Main (opposed to "Beginner") - WWI and Biplanes" had 3 entries. A Sopwith Triplane got 1st place, a S.E.5.a got 2nd and a Fokker Dr.I ("Kempf") got 3rd. Also in 1/48, but in the category "Beginner - Propeller - single engine", there was a Spad XIII. 1/72 - 8 entries in the "Main - WWI and Biplanes" category, including my Berthold's D.VII. Winner was an ot biplane, a wonderful Fiat CR 32. Second place was a Sopwith Camel and 3rd place, a RE8. There was also a 1/72 diorama that will bring tears to some list folks. It includes an Airfix Spad VII. Figures - A 1/35 MvR got 2nd place in "Figures - smaller than 100mm" category". These are the OT things I saw. I really believed I'd see less entries. And no Tiger Moths in the Biplane categories, curiously. "Pictures", you are thinking. I took lots of them, but only tomorrow I'll see the result. Fotometer batteries didn't work so I'm afraid pictures may be too dark or too bright. I met ex-listee Alexandre Triffoni and we talked a lot. After the event, I was waiting for my turn to take my D.VII and I talked with the guy who got 3rd with the RE8 and also made the MvR figure. He had 4 more OT entries and I told him about The List. So, folks, be prepared to receive a new Brazilian listee this week. His name is Adriano. I know his preferences but I'll let him tell you. Well, see you in the morning! I have to say first that I had a *lot* of fun, as well as being run off my feet, but some disappointments. The good! Lots and lots of WW1 models, decals, resin, brass, books on sale. At the first show five years ago there was (AFAIR) just one kit, and David Charles beat me to it! Small Scale OoB Aircraft was won by list lurker Graham Steel with a perfect Eduard Albatros D.V If my memory serves me, Graham has taken Gold with every model he has ever entered in this show. A Silver in Small Scale Aircraft (Modified) was won by an old friend of mine named Dick Stracey with an AVRO 504. Dick introduced me to vacform kits for the first time when he had a model shop and I was a 17 year old first year Uni student. I'd seen his shop display of WW1 aircraft and marvelled at what I thought were scratchbuilds of aircraft that had never been kitted. He convinced me to try one and I never looked back, so I owe him a lot. It was a pleasure to see him collect the medal. List member and wood and fabric aircraft pilot David Charles agreed to present the awards - we hope he agrees that we were honouring him as a member of the founding committee for our show. Plenty of WW1 models around, though not nearly enough to get a WW1 split. A very nice de Turenne Nieuport 11 showed that there *are* modellers who build quickly other than Dennis! I was quite taken by several of them, particularly SP's lovely SE-5a, which looks *much* better in person than it did on IM (sorry Bob!) It has been an *immense* pleasure to have SP's model in my house, and at our show and a great advertisement for the friendship of the WW1 list. *I* got a buzz out of having a friend on the other side of earth willing to take a chance and send a model all the way to Australia, and a still bigger buzz showing it to current and lurking listees and non listee WW1 modellers Incidentally, David C made up a set of list buttons and four listees proudly wore them throughout the show. The *Bad* We had a drop in overall entries, and a drop in WW1 entries in particular. I'm partly at fault, since for the first time I failed to get an entry ready in time. That meant I ruined SP's effort to be involved in a "head to head" at the Brisbane end, so I'd better get cracking and post off a return competitor to his show for October. The *Ugly* Or the embarrassing anyway. Does anyone remember that blasted 1:700 ot ship that I was building some months ago as a result of losing a bet? The one that had a death wish and near drove me nuts? The one I rigged several times as a consequence on falling magnifiers etc? Well the rotten thing won an entirely undeserved silver medal *and* one of the judges (trying to be constructive!) told me that it'd have won gold IF ONLY I TOOK A BIT MORE CARE WITH THE RIGGING !!! In addition it was rigged differently (sweep, incidence etc), to compensate for the lighter engine, and also had slightly longer undercarriage and cabane struts (but still slightly shorter than those on the 23). Every single report of a Nieuport 11 from 1917 onwards has turned out to be a Nieuport 21. The tail plane is on as is the lower wing. No fit problem with the tail and the lower wing will require on minor putty on the bottom. The side fit is perfect. Dry fitting the middle wing reveals no problems. Good thing. I can't believe the amount of decals I have on this plane so far and I still have the fuselage to go. Nigel has alerted me to a possible cabane strut problem but a side by side comparison doesn't reveal any difference. Oh, well. More decals tonight and maybe some more construction tomorrow. I see no reason why it will not be completed by late this week; no later than the weekend. Finally got my internet back and the models out there are beautiful. Very good work.
