Unfortunately VERY true. To add insult to injury this was after the same Poles had the same problem trying to convince the French that they knew quite well how to fly and fight. The saddest point in this tale of history was the Polish AF in England was, after being the most ardent defenders of London, after being in the majority of "English" aces, at the end of the war, England's socialist leaning government, in a pathetic effort to appease the new communist government in Poland, wrote a letter to all of the Polish pilots in the RAF telling them in no uncertain terms to "get the f$#k out of our country and GO HOME!" They weren't even thanked for their service, or given the opportunity to seek English citizenship. On returning to Poland many of these same men who fought the Nazis from English and French soil to free their homeland were persecuted in their homeland by the new government for being "traitors". A very sad end to a band of men who fought the war from day one. AND although this is very interesting let's get back to WW-I when the Poles were on the Austrian, or Russian side depending on where your village sat. I'd estimate about 100 Schiffer books alone; mostly WWII but a few of interest to us. Examples: British Aviation Squadron Markings of WWI, Les Rogers, $49.95 (yes, the one recently published at $69.95) The Zeppelin in Combat, Douglas Robinson, $36.95 Lafayette Flying Corps, Gordon, $41.95 French Aeroplanes before WWI, Leo Opdycke, $39.95 You'll find some of them at the website http://www.HamiltonBook.com/ click on "WWI and WWII" Through the website, you might be able to email them requesting the 'New Arrivals' catalog dated August 17, 2001. If you get this one, or you know someone who does, it is *well worth* the time to look through all the tiny print. Sad note: they do NOT ship overseas. I've dealt with the company for years: very reliable, quick, charges $3.50 shipping for ANY number of books ordered (not each--the total!), sends a refund check if what you order is gone. Remember the German pilot who was asked by fat Hermann Göring if he can do something for them and the pilot answered "Yes Herr General - please give us a squadron of Spitfires"? - that was Adolf Gallant who said it in real life, if I remember correctly. I love that movie because it is quite free of kitschie klischees and off course because of the aircraft. But I think it does not reflect the true horror of the battle, maybe because it was made at a time where to much realism was not demanded. Just compare "The longest day" to "Saving Private Ryan"... I must say that the tolerance of the list masters and members is the main reason why I LOVE this list. It's like worldwide streams of knowledge flow together from every corner of the world to form one big pool of wiseness everybody can drink from for free (hiccup...). Everytime a new member joins the list more knowledge flows in - that's wonderful. Hey what about "Vintage Aviation Modeling List" to cover the aera between the wars as well as before WW1? Tally-Ho! Message-ID: Hi Folks, Sometime in the last few days, someone posted a tip about using Rub 'n Buff for these type of cowlings..The site search for the archives is not working, so can whoever posted it, repeat it for me??? Since I had volunteered to collect tips and techniques and none have been forwarded to me yet!!!, but TONS have been posted daily, I think I am going to start "collecting" them and organizing them by topic. Are there any objections to this?? I will give full credit to the author. Also, I could contact whoever is involved prior to posting on the site...Let me know and TIA to the author of the above tip!! I'd like to point out that the Polish people, in general, get a very bad 'rap' in the US. They have always been industrious, inventive and very, very successful. I, for one, have a deeper respect for the Poles since I have taken the time to learn the true history. These are people to be in awe of.
