And to Poles in 1940, with the Caudron Cyclone, so called 'flying coffin'. And even if French authorities banned after many crashes to fly Cyclones, Poles wanted fight Germans so much that they were still flying and scoring kills. Americans in WWII made the same with Russians, giving them Airacobras, Tomahawks and Bostons. It is normal in wartime, not to give away your best weapon, even to ally. Ah, but the Russians had the last laugh with the P-39. Most of their aces flew the Airacobra and made most of their kills in it. The West still doesn't believe it and still says that they only used the P-39 against ground targets... Correct, Omega (who does all three, the SA.2, SA.4 and SG.1), Rosemont (SA.2 only) and Amodel (SA.2 currently, but they plan an SA.4). If anyone wants my opinion LMK... ;-) Yea, I have a load of updates to do to that page. One of these days...one of these days. I still have two more modeler's "stuff" to upload to the WW1 site, plus the work on my other sites. So, unfortunately, the French pages are low on my priority list. They could be seen on the new page of our modelling club at http://kpmpresov.host.sk The page isn't yet completed but I hope it will be up tomorrow at 8.00 CET. Funny thing. After the WWI,the French banned German aeroplanes being sold to Finland, but were very eager to sell Caudron G.3s (this was _after_ the war, remember!). Our little Air Force got only three Fokker D.VIIs, which they would rather have as main fighter type, plus some miscellanious two seaters. Then during the episode two they donated the remaining Caudron 714s (the Cyclones) to us after the poor Polish pilots had found out hard way that they are not combat aircraft. (KTR)~U" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: SPAD 'pulpit' comparison Message-ID: Okay, I'll do this in a short message. The three I have are: Roseplane SPAD SA.2; Amodel SPAD SA.2; and Omega SPAD SG.1. Overall I give the nod to Roseplane. While there are some problems with it - no cockpit detail (well, that's not true, but what's there isn't accurate), the rear of the nacelle isn't right, the nacelle is missing the "channels" for the air going to the engine coming from the "grates" in the nacelle, decals aren't that great - overall the level of detail is superb. Thin flying surfaces, dimension-wise it's spot on, and a better presentation overall. Next is a toss up, really, although I give the nod to Amodel, but for one major reason only - the landing gear struts are molded in-situ with larger parts of the model. The main parts are thick (hence my reason for replacing the floor of the nacelle) as are the sprue gates connecting the smaller parts to the trees. However, the flying surfaces are thin enough and the smaller parts are very nice. Another reason for the Amodel to nudge the Omega down to the third position is the fact it's injected plastic, versus resin for the Omega. Decals are very nice in the kit as well. Molded in cockpit detail is extremely nicely done, even if it is square. ;-) Third is the Omega, although it's difficult to give a complete view, since I have the SG.1 and not one of the "open" nacelle types. The SG.1 nacelle Omega has molded as a single solid part, so I can't compare the nacelles of the three kits fairly. Niceities with the Omega includ the p/e, which includes the "fence" behind the gunner's head (which both the Roseplane *and* Amodel kits lack) as well as their unique design wheel spokes. Decals are also nice, and a very nice addition (actually subtraction ;-) is Omega molded the sides of the fuselage right by the cockpit as "open" - if you're wondering what I mean check out the photo on the front of the Mini-DF of "Ma Jeanne". This is the only one of the three to include the "console" I've been complaining about, although it's not 100% accurate. Omega also has molded in cockpit sidewall detail. Omega's engine is the best. So, if price isn't an object, I prefer the Roseplane. However, "price per pound" the Amodel is probably overall the winner. Both the Omega and Roseplane are around US$30, while the Amodel is around US$10. My ultimate plan is to combine some parts. I'm thinking of lowering the nacelle on the Amodel I'm working on, which means I'll use the Omega engine since it's by far the best. I'll probably stick the Amodel engine on the Rosemont, and use Rosemont's engine on the Omega. ;-) I used the Omega "console" as a partial template for the one I scratched for the Amodel. I'm probably going to use one part of the generally inaccurate interior detail of the Roseplane to provide a template for a piece in the nacelle. HTH... Sorry. This is a pet peeve for me, almost as bad as calling the Iosef Stalin(IS)-1, -2 or -3 tank a "JS". There is no Dorand AR.1/2. Dorand was some military figure that came up with the idea, but I believe it was Renault that actually built it (or had some hand in the building of it).
