Simple answer - Dicta Ira! I suffered from the same problem, mainly due to the list. The high quality of the work on the list inspires me to attempt superdetailing way beyond my skill, meaning most projects take too long or just fail. It's the AMS problem (Advanced Modeller's Syndrome). So here's my solution. Pick one ongoing project that will be superdetailed, highly researched and take several years. Direct all of your AMS tendencies at that. At the same time, build lots of simple, straightforward out of the box projects. There are so many good kits available now where you don't have to do anything extra to them that you can have get good, reasonably accurate models finished quite quickly, having fun into the bargain. And the list can answer all your simple research questions. But you will never cure the buying problem. You will *always* have too many kits, but that is part of the fun of the hobby. My wife makes doll's houses and furniture (I should say minitaures, as these are not toys and are very expensive) and she is just the same. She has boxes of unmade furniture kits and a half-completed dolls house for which she has very grand plans! Also, I'd suggest you build more than one kit at once, but no more than three (otherwise half built things sit around for ever). I started doing this because I realized building one kit at a time increased the frustration if things did not go well. So at present I have two kits underway - an OOB Eduard Nie 17 in the simplest possible scheme (alumnium dope all oer) and a card model Hawer Hind. Next up is an OOB MAC Phonix. Haven't decided on my superdetail project, but just knowing I'm going to do one has stopped me doing too much AMS stuff on the Nie 17. [...] > Also, I'd suggest you build more than one kit at once, but no more than > three That sounds very fammiliar to me. I work in the same way. Usually I have two kits on the bench. One for superdetailing and second OOB or only with little aftermarket sets, mostly decals and pe sets. My last project was ot Aichi B7A2 1:72 build completely OOB just in two weekends. It looks like brand new plane with no weathering but this was for fun. But this not helps with buying new kits. For one completed I get two or three new. In last few months most of my new kits comes from you, mostly OT vac kits like Rosepalne Caudron, Sierra UFFAG C.I, formaplane Be.2c etc. Thanks to the list my stockpile grows much too fast. -- Witold Kozakiewicz ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 21:40:24 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: Re: Voss Dr.I (don't kill me!)
