However, while we can all easily recall the number of times Fokker products were recalled, we somehow have group amnesia about the way other firms products failed repeatedly for one reason or another, nor do we seem inclined to consider that the Fokker products were "cutting edge" at a time when no-one knew enough to predict the behaviour of the aircraft until *after* enough had failed to prove something was wrong. It's not as if it doesn't still happen, mind you. The (ot alert) F-111 was a highly successfull aircraft despite being recalled a couple of times for repair to systems built on the "cheapest bidder" principle. Almost everything we read about Fokker is seen through one of two prisms - Fokkers own biography and his egotistical manner, or Weyls hatred and his half truths. Ninety percent of the other stuff is influenced by whether the "historian" believed the one, or the other, and I'm afraid that Fokker is not a very sympathetic character (Mark me as a former believer in Weyl, now highly suspicious) Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s). Main character was a H-P 0/400 pilot in 207 Squadron flying night bombing missions. The copy I have is copyrighted in 1989, first printed in the US in 1990 so I doubt it is the book you referred to. Another book, Green Balls, by Paul Bewsher, first published in 1919, is the account of a H-P 0/400 observer who also flew night bombing missions. the title speaks for itself. I suppose this green ack-ack had a profound effect on the night bomber crews, especially when they couldn't reach the higher altitudes due to weather, etc. Some accounts also mention the distinctive smell of the ack-ack. Along with being trapped in the spotlights, the flaming onions were probably the biggest worries of any night bomber crew and would be mentioned in almost any book about them. The translation of a brilliant aeronautical design idea into a mass produced fighting aeroplane involved an incredible amount supervision and attendance to seemingly small details. Fokker was working at a time when aviation was progressing from the one man designer/builder/flyer stage to the corporate effort it is today. The whole process became too complex for one or a few men to handle. AF was a great designer, a superb test pilot and an agressive businessman. However repeated problems with quality control and materials, (even into the 20s, ask any Notre Dame fan about Knute Rockney), leads me to believe that QC was not his strong point. Now whether this deficiency was due to deliberate cost cutting, poor choice of people in charge of supervision, or a monumental ego incapable of learning from mistakes, the fact remains that Fokker quality control was not an industry standard. sp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Aug 2001 14:39:40 +0100 From: David Fleming To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Handley Page O/400 Question Message-ID: <3B6E9E1C.1F430811@dial.pipex.com> Does anyone have a photo or references for the aluminium doped used as transportd for the 1919 Peace Conference. During the war, as much as one of three shells didn't explode, and how about the reduction gears in the 200 HP Hisso? There were inspection 'standards' set up for components, but these were set up by each company, and varied widely. As to 'industry' standards, how about the lower wing on the Albatros DIII/DV, (which the Austrians redesigned immediately, and never had any trouble with) which was never truly 'fixed'? Tony Fokker was "trying to make a buck", no question, and his ego got in the way of admitting mistakes/miscalculations, but what about all those "patriotic" German and French firms who also built major disasters? does greed explain them as well?
