Mine was somewhat different, I didn't wreck any models this weekend but I did get it into my head to build the Revell N28. Which for some reason I swear I had in my stash of models. I spent the better part of the weekend looking for it. (Well a couple of hours each day anyway). I even trashed the attic, which once my wife came home I had to say I was tidying up.... (Another hour or two cleaning old stuff out). Anyway earlier today I finally gave up, I couldn't find the N28. I had however pulled out some models to look at though. You know when you go through your old models you have to pull some out, since its as if they were new again. Among them a half built DH5 and a Sopwith Dolphin. But and this is the gold at the end of the Rainbow. About 3 years ago I traded for an Aero 72 Bristol Scout. At the time I recall I was going out of town so I never looked in the box. Anyway tonight I finally decided to open the box since I had pulled it out with the DH5. You should have seen my surprise tonight when I opened the little box and found not just one scout but two, and not the same model either. One is plastic with metal engine and other small parts, I presume this is the Aero 72 model since its injected plastic. The other would appear to be resin its definitely a different model but is a Bristol Scout, it has no instructions and is molded in tan colored resin. I'm still trying to think this through, the modeler I swapped with must have stored the resin model in the box to save space I guess. After all that I guess I had better start researching Bristol Scouts. btw if anyone has a clue as to the version and make of the resin scout it would be helpful. As to the Nieuport, well I guess the PC10 gods have spoken....... Last saturday, a pair of friends R/C modelers (so you may imagine how sick they are) dragged me to attend to a regional model show held here at my city. I'm not too fond of them, as I feel a bit akward for not finishing as many kits as I would want to and sometimes been unable to point at flaws of some of the models exposed just because of the same reason (noblesse obligue). Anyway, I went there. Not too many models but quite a few. Preferences are german WW2 subjects and cars. Some ingenious modeler did several Sci-Fi ships from scratch. A few 1/72 rather nice WW1 planes, probably done by a kid. Good work! I also saw for the first time an old Airfix 1/32 1914 London Bus... what a nice subject for a good WW1 diorama! Being a complete outsider from the local modelling clubs, I roamed the tables quite unnoticed, but even so I managed to bother two judges who were examining a small WW1 vignette, depicting a 1914 german soldier helping a british private. They were arguing -sotto voce- that the german spiked helmet was too small for the head. The poor modeler got a good amount of criticism for that reason so I tried to help the unknown (for me at least) WW1 modeler: "That's why the german headgear were made of leather and were quite small compared to later steel helmets" The judges, more used to see WW2 pot helmets turned and froze me with their glances: "what?" they said. "Those spiked helmets.. -I dared to say- were made of boiled leather. They weren't the same as lined steel hats. They fit closer. The figure looks right". "Harrumpf" they said and gave the modeler a good note. Then my friends came in and dragged me away from the room. It was a nice saturday afternoon, after all. Alberto Santos Dumont was born July 20, 1873, in the village of Cabangu, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. At the age of 18, Santos Dumont was sent by his father to Paris where he devoted his time to the study of chemistry, physics, astronomy and mechanics. Putting aside the aerostation, he began to devote himself towards solving the problem of steering the balloons. His first steered balloon, "Santos Dumont no. 1," ascended on September 18th 1898. In view of the success of no. 3 balloon, the Aero Club of France was founded and Mr. Deutsch de La Meurt instituted the "Deutsch Prize" to be awarded to the balloonist who, taking off from Saint-Cloud, circumnavigated the Eiffel Tower and returned to the starting point in less than thirty minutes. This prize was conquered by Santos Dumont on October 19th, 1901, with dirigible no. 6. Besides this prize, Santos Dumont received the sum of 100,000 francs which he distributed in equal parts to his workers and the beggars of Paris. Santos Dumont died on July 23rd, 1932, in Brazil. According to the law no. 165 of December 5th, 1947, enacted by the National Congress of Brazil and sanctioned by His Excellency President Eurico Gaspar Dutra, Alberto Santos Dumont was permanently listed in the Brazilian Air Ministry Almanac with the rank of Lieutenant Brigadier. He was promoted to the Honorary rank of Air Marshall on September 22, 1955, according to the law no. 3636, and is permanently listed in the Brazilian Air Ministry Almanac. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 08:06:47 -0500 From: "Mark Shannon" To: Subject: Re: Xtracolor Paints WWI colors Message-ID: When talking about WWI colors, it is hard to define 'accuracy'. You'll see a couple of discussions of this from the archives from about a month back. So, we do have certain colors, such as lozenge colors, that are agreed on from authentic samples and descriptions that still exist in the manufacturers' archives. Most WWI modeling colors, however, are discussed in terms of 'reasonable' more than 'accurate' So, Xtracolor paints in the WWI range are generally considered very reasonable. Their versions of PC-10, German Dark Green, Underside Blue, and Mauve/Lilac are relatively popular. But PC-10 is a case in point about matching the color. The mixture stayed relatively constant, but there is evidence that the brown ochre pigment used changed in tone through the war. In addition, the method of application changed as different sequences for colored and clear shrinking or non-shrinking dopes were used at different times. Add to that the fact that PC-10 was a proprietary RFC mixture for most of the war that was based on protective value more than color, and you have manufacturer variations and tolerance ranges. Then it goes out in the sun and fades. The best anyone really can do is say that it ranges from greener shades similar to FS34086, 34087, 34088, to shades that are more chocolate brown like 30099. There have been studies to nail down the French colors in the five color camouflage and the pre-five-color Jaune Claire (a beautiful young girl with striking blonde hair that was taken as a standard ;{)), called 'Project Butterfly', and there are color mixes based on these results, and Xtracolor paints seem to fit reasonably well there, as well. Xtracolor paints are easy to work with, mix well, and are tough as finishes. If you prefer solvent-based enamels, they are as accurate as anyone can claim, and if some color constable says otherwise, you have permission to hand him a tin and tell him to apply it liberally where the sun never shines. .Mark. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 14:18:07 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Fernando=20Cecilio?= To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: RE: Junkers D I - If I may... I emailed him back telling him if he didn't respond to me by the end of the day today with the books I ordered, I am lodging a complaint with Ebay and posting negative feedback.
