OK, it's not plastic, and it's a little off-scale for Matt's taste, but
I put a small page up of photos of my 1/9 scale Fokker D-VIII as it
currently sits 'in the bones'. Still to do are landing gear undercarriage and
cowling, then rigging it up to FLY!

enjoy,

Neverforget, you may be assistant warden, but I run this assylum!
It was someone else's idea (Shane?) but I was on-board pretty much from the
get-go.
This is one good group of people :-)

I was hoping to look through the archives, but it
looks like Al was also in on it. Maybe I'll stop with helping
with the site updates. ;-)
Me? Taken in? By what? :-) No, I knew when I read the dates
what was "going on". Plus it didn't help anyone's cause when I
talked to Eduard and *knew* what was being released.
You all are one sick bunch, that's for sure!! :-)
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Many of those compasses could be removed to an indoor location while parked
since it was a really great idea to protect them from weather, and, potential
vandals or thieves. Watches were mounted as removable also. You could also
lose binoculars by being foolish. If that was really what you wanted to do

Howdy!
So does anyone have some Bittner Tales from Chicago? I only had one chance to bust his chops... I knew he was standing behind me as I was setting out my photo request cards. So I spoke to myself as I set the cards down. Or in case of a French aircraft when I did not set a card down.
"French, nah. German, YES! French, nah. SPAD, uh-uh. Albatros, YES! Nieuport, nope. Morane, no. Halberstadt, Oh yeah! Fokker, gotta shoot that!" etc.
Anyone else bust his chops for building dinky French models?
Later!

Many early compass mounts extended upward from the floor like a ships compass
and they were not necessarily dashpanel mounted. Those came a lot later. Many
looked like a small model of a compass on board a ship. Also remember the
planes only carried enough fuel for moderately short flights. Miniscule
compared to today and many were only about 20 or 30 miles from home base to the
combat area. Flight duration was about 3 hours out and return.
Even when moving around it could have been only a 100 mile move, or, as little
as 15 or 20. The front was quite static for a very long time.
Remember Europe is not like Australia and the Americas. From Holland to
Switzerland is about like crossing Texas.

Pretty deep fix-it job on that venerable old kit- about the only thing I
could spot was he didn't correct the trailing edge cut-outs in the middle
wing. The kit has them as blunt - they should be brought to a thin edge.
It's good to see someone mention the oversize tail feathers too. It's obvious
that the tool makers used the old Nieto drawings, and these showed the
elevator span a foot greater than any other source. An old C&C US had a chart
listing all the major Dr.I dimensions as given in five sources- German and
British, plus Nieto's numbers. The five all had the span in the 8' 10" range.
Nieto had 9'10", and this royally goofed the whole tail.
I still love this kit- it's got POTENTIAL!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
you have read it already, Matt asked for a Ni17 in1/72. My personal
connections ( Czech Connection) informed me about the first attempts to make
exactly this type in 1/72. I have got test shots and test packages. I am not
the great Nieuport expert, but the kit looks o.k. for me. The V-shape of the
wings matches perfectly with the large scale drawings in the DF.
Eduard says that the 1/72 business is running low. Therefore they decided to
make highly attractive markings and a Profipack version only. No french
markings, as they are not wanted by the modelling community, as Eduard says.
More to come after finishing the kit.
Hans

I'm still highly doubtful. Afterall, the subject line is
misspelled. ;-) In the typical fashion, "I shall believe it when
I have it in my hands"...
And if French markings are not wanted by the modeling community,
then explain the markings in the first release of the Balloon
Scale Nieuport 11?... :-)

I'm confused here,
Why do we need more Nieuports. We already have a perfectly good Revell N28
and N17 which are in and out of production all the time. With the addition
of the Toko/Eastern Express Nieuport 11 types. It would seem we have plenty
of good models. Admittedly too too many of them have boring French camo but
hey we can't have everything.
Now what we really need are some more Sopwith types, these are really
under-represented, or failing that we could do with a nice injected Martin
Kitten or even dare I say a 1/72 PKZ 2. I mean think of the sales. Nieuports
are tapped out imho, how many 5 colour aircraft can you build before you get
bored......
Well thats my two cents, I'm off to look at cars, lets see I really like the
look of an Edsel......

The Nieuport 28 by Revell, altough it can be built OOB and get a fine
looking model is fairly unnacurate, and is no match to modern WW1 kits. It's
a case just like the Fokker Dr.1 by Revell and Eduard: both are good kits,
but there's no choice but to get an Eduard if you like a great model built
with little effort.
The nieuport 17 really needs retooling and a lot of improvement. Let's wait
until Roden or MAC gets without new german subjects, in view that Eduard
doesn't seem too enthusiastic about reducing their 17 to 1/72

Yup,
Greg VanWyngarden took a few well deserved shots at him during his presentation.
