At that time I will be out of my current display case. My 1/700 scale ships will be coming home in less that a year and the misc models will follow soon after. My goal of having my display case filled with OT only is within reach. And I feel a building spurt coming on. I feel like pulling some of the vacs off my shelf and putting them together before someone releases them in injection. I hope to turn out 2 vacs this month, the Ni 27 and the MS Type P. To most Americans (those not involved in history related hobbies, like modeling) ask them questions like 'when?' or 'where?' that happened more than a year ago, and the answers you get should mortify the nation. As a retired 30-year veteran of the US system of higher education, I could tell you horror stories all night long relating the ignorance of the last several generations of college students. I taught (among other things) art appreciation to totally bored and disinterested general college students, and art history to art majors. I used to torture myself by giving "bonus questions" on art appreciation tests: one time, as the test happened to fall on Columbus day, I offered a 5% bonus if they could tell me what year Columbus sailed the ocean blue--out of 90+ freshmen, three (yes, 3) knew the correct year. To keep this OT, not a single student could tell me which current US holiday used to be known as Armistice Day--much less why. To teach art history, I had to teach history, arithmetic, literature, religion, basic science--not to mention reading and writing. As a matter of fact, WWI had a significant on the development of modern art, with several talented artists killed in action and a group of pacifists in Switzerland doing strange things in the name of art. In my world travels, I am always delighted and dismayed at the breadth of cultural knowledge of European, Australian, and even Asian young people. I am embarrassed by Americans. The levers on Pfalz and Albatros columns though, are *locks* to hold them in position while bashing the cr*p out of reuctant Spandaus (or just cocking them, according to several sources) Shane ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s). OK, I've had enough of this crap. My wife, God Bless Her, is a history teacher. She gets numerous e-mails each year from parents asking her "what did you do to get my child so fired up about history?". She puts in a 12 hour day, Monday-Friday plus some work on Saturdays doing this. She is a hard teacher, a demanding teacher, and will accept nothing but the best from her students. She teaches in a very depressed (economically), rural public school. Most of these kids have parents that don't even have a GED, if that much. So, all of you who like to trash the current state of affairs in our school system regarding history, I will ask you what my wife asks people who whine about it: What have YOU personally done about it? Have you volunteered as a teachers aide in your child's, or your local school? I myself help my wife, and any other history teacher that requests it, with presentations to her class regarding the US soldier throughout history. I have spent thousands (ask my wife) of dollars on uniforms, accouterments, weapons, etc. to do programs at historic sites and battlefield parks, with no remuneration. My reward was the one adult or kid who came up to me out of a couple of days of interpreting, and said "Thank you, I think I'll go to the library now and read some on the subject you spoke on". The children in my wife's school are not PROUD of their ignorance, they are embarrassed by it. They will not let you know this though, you have to get close to find out. Instead of us carping on here, I suggest you go out, sign up at your local school, and try to let your enthusiasm for history infect some of the local kids. You won't change the world, but you can affect your corner. I'm through with my rant now, I'm sorry. Yes, it seems worse and may be, but the isolationism that the US has suffered from time to time is possibly at the root of the problem - because to a degree the US has chosen a vision of where it wants to be and consciously or unconsciously chosen to ignore everything outside the direct path to that future. While I see some minor symptoms of a lack of national general knowledge even here, I also enjoy the idea that the US listees are obviously people who *want* to learn, and are doing so using the internet in this forume (and probably elsewhere) by interacting with each other *and*all*us*weird*and*wonderfull*furriners*. It occurs to me that this is the future version of a village, and we are all soaking up general knowledge from our "list neighbours" - and that if *we* are doing so, maybe all those young US (and Australian, and British, and Swedish, and Luxie, and Argentinian, and German and etc.) kids who are discussing something revolting to my senses (c-rap music ;-) on other lists are simultaneously getting their own version of a broader education. I hope so. Do you really believe that Argentina would want to invade the Malvinas/Falklands if Diego and Sandy were in charge? FWIW Sod it. Soapbox is all slippery. Whoa! You're preaching to the converted. None of the US members who has posted on this has blamed the school system at all IIRC. Mostly, they blame a lack of interest by the kids. And they've quoted stats and surveys to back them up. IIRC not one of them said "Teachers are lazy and stupid and don't teach history properly" > My reward was the one adult or kid who came > up to me out > of a couple of days of interpreting, and said "Thank you, I > think I'll go to > the library now and read some on the subject you spoke on". Only - they weren't attacking the teaching of history, but the fact that "kids nowadays" don't seem that interested in it.
