I've been lurking for a few days, and have decided to step forward into "the light" and introduce myself. My name is Warren, I'm 40, and have had a great love of WWI aircraft since I was a kid. I grew up building all of the 1/72nd scale Revell WWI a/c that I could get my hands on, in addition to the 1/28th series they did. I've still got the Frank Luke Spad in my closet, unbuilt. I started buying up some kits in the early 90's to pur back for the day when I could have a place in the house of my own to build models. Kinda makes me a collector by default, I guess that happens to everyone who builds. I could access the FAQ list, so i have a few FNG-type questions for ya'll: 1) What does OT mean? On Topic? Off Topic? 2) What happened to Meikraft Models? Did he go "belly-up"? I know when I ordered a Gotha from him we talked about how expensive it is to do injection molding, and how the eastern bloc models were putting some pressure on him. I never heard form him again, and all attempts to contact him met with failure. This certainly seem slike a friendly group of folks. I have heard rumors of an aviation museum to open up somewhere near Chattanooga featuring WWI a/c. Have any of you heard the same? Perhaps they got some of Mr. Ryder's collection when it was auctioned off. If this comes off, then we in the Sunny Southland will have a place to go to see stuff fly. Or the >pastels first, a clear coat and then a wash? > Steve: First, you can use the wash on a clear flat finish but it will soak in more and stain more. With some things, that's what you want, armour topics being a good example. Second, do the wash first on a clear coat (gloss or flat), when you finish, let it dry. Then add a clear coat to seal it. Then do pastel chalk weathering, which really works on a flat, not gloss, surface. After that, you can seal the pastel chalks with a clear coat of either flat or gloss. Note that the final clear will reduce the impact of your weathering. I wanted to let you know there is a large fly-in at Dayton, with the next one being September, 2003. We had a good turnout with about 70 airplanes signed up for the last fly-in and about 40 showed up. There is also a large R/C contingent with some fantastic airplanes, as well as many vendors for authentic relics as well as several manufacturers of R/C kits. We only allow WW1 materials on the site. There are re-enactors as well, and they do a bang-up job. I may be biased but I think it is a great show, and it's free. Best, Dave W. P.S. I haven't bought any kits in a while. I do suffer from "multi-decade disorder" in that I like a/c and armor from 1914-1945. I am also "multi-scalar". Hey! At least I admit I have a problem, and that IS the first step to recovery, right? Of course, I don't know that I really want to be better, lol. I do! I Do!! I'd like to now how much of a difference there was between wartime airships and those built after the war like the Hindenburg.. Now it depends on which of the post war great airships you're talking about. The LZ-120 and 121 were finished in 1919 as commercial derivitives of the last of the OT ships. The 120 went to Italy ,and the 121 went to France as war remuneration. The US Navy built the ZR-1 Shenandoah by folowing the design practices (read "copied" if it works don't fix it!) found in the OT LZ-49. So to answer your question below the ZR-1 would be closest to a mid war German ship and easiest to retro. A company called Megatech advertises a 48" long Hindenburg made from balsa and plastic as well as some smaller kits. The plans for these kits have been around for many many years. I have not seen the Megatech re release, and I seriously doubt that there is as much material in them as what you are getting billed for. And if you will notice they are all box scale. At least two of the kits represent US military airships that were built in Friederichshafen, Germany by the Zeppelin Works in 1923 as a part of reparation payments to the US. Actually only one ship was built by Germany for the US the ZR-3 Los Angeles started its life as the LZ-126. The Navy's only other forign airship was the ZR-2 which was built in England as the R38, but was destroyed on it's acceptance flight for the US in 1921, so it never wore the ZR designation. The Graf Zeppelin wast the LZ-127 and a sister ship to the Los Angeles. These two "modern" post war airships would be most likely to retro to late war design. The Akron, and Macon are unique US designs, but they came from the Germans that moved to Ohio and set up the Goodyear ZeppelinWorks. Hindenberg, and the Graf II were the most modern of all the huge ships, and not likely to be back dated. And we're only talking Zeppelins here, you havent even touched on the Shutz-Lange or other manufacturers. "It's the doped fabric stupid not the hydrogen!" The weekend offensive is expected to secure the salient. The fighting has been mostly hand to hand scratch building with tweezers, #11 bayonetts and glue needles. Recent action included a belt driven device, probably a generator, mounted outboard on the starboard rear of the nacelle and a supercharger/blower thingie behind the engine in the rear of the nacelle. Bits of card, slices of rod, punched disks, fine coper and brass wire and parafilm made up the battlefield terrain. A platoon of "Diggers" were sent out on a forraging expedition to the spares box and returned with some Grandt Line bolt heads for terminal connectors on the back of the generator and who knows what other "souveniers" that may have fallen into pockets or under hats. The blower was made of laminated punched card disks and the ducting was brass wire with stretched parafilm rolled around it. At this point the Commander nearly succeeded in out-generaling himself again. He had ordered the nacelle framework built during the last attack and found the installation of the blower and ducting inside the framework a "sticky wicket". With a characteristic "Harrumphh" once the installation was complete, the Commander then turned his attentions to the panel mounting lugs on the nacelle frame. These lugs were what the removed nacelle panels screwed into when they were attached. The stripping regiment was turned loose on a piece of innocent 5 thou card. The Commander was fortunate to avoid a friendly fire incident, (this time), from the close action of the #11 blade. The strips were cut into tiny tabs and these were applied to the frame in due location and quantity. At the time of this dispatch, one nacelle salient stands at this point and the other will soon follow. That will leave both exhaust manifolds for the final offensive . The Commander plans another halt on the AEG front after the nacelles are secured. He will turn his attentions to a few minor millitary commitments elsewhere before, and against all sound advice, he assaults the fuselage. sp After action recon photos expected soon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:21:31 -0400 From: Marcio Campos To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: More Brazilian stuff Message-ID: <945A5180E4D0D311BF620008C7A457B90DAF0CDB@nyexch01.starmedia.net> This message is in MIME format. I don't remember if I told you, but that decal sheet with Brazilian markings for the Spad VII is made in the right scale. However, there's salvation outside 1/72 (perhaps). For those who build that other scale, I discovered a decal sheet with Brazilian markings for an Avro 504k. Take a look here: http://www.lepidoptera.hpg.com.br/fcmdecal/48-09.htm and be patient, because the image takes some time to load. Once again, if someone is interested in the decals, just write me off-list. I'll be happy to send them. The decals for the Spad are here: http://www.lepidoptera.hpg.com.br/fcmdecal/72-11.htm More about my package: I'm delighted with the Windsock Datafile on the Hansa Brandemburg W29. And the Roden Pfalz D.IIIa comes with markings for Degelow, Berthold and another pilot, I don't remember who. I've already decided I'll build it in Degelow's markings. However, the instructions ask me to paint certain parts in Humbrol 180 (Red Leather), but my Humbrol color chart doesn't have this one. What can I use instead?
