But since Flashback re-released the Berg from the same master and with decals as well. It would seem to me that the Macchi might not be far behind. As to the DML DVII, it'll be re-released either by DML or Hasegawa so I'm sure there will be lots more chances. Models I am still trying to get and hopefully havent missed out on, are the 1/72 CMK Junkers D1 and J1 and the latest Morane by CMK. I did order them from AvUSK months ago. I'm hoping they will turn up eventually. No criticism of AvUSK by the way. CMK models just are problematical sometimes. Whilst were on the subject, the local hobby store has a RHVP Sopwith Swallow At $40 CDN I'm wondering whether its worthwhile or would converting the Revell Sopwith Camel be a more cost effective way to get a Swallow. -------Original Message------- From: Todd Hayes Date: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 07:32:17 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Kits You've Missed Out On (and really wish you hadn't!) Rhino is a modeling/animation package, good modeler, fair rendering system. NURBS stands for non-uniform rational b-splines, it and patches are the two major spline-based parametric modeling methods. NURBS are particularly useful for organic shapes (like faces) which have constantly changing curves in all dimensions- there's a number of ways of controlling them, but in all cases you don't manipulate the surface directly, but rather with control points that lie outside the surface itself, and which have an effect on an area of the surface. Think of stretching a thin rubber surface over the top of a bowl, and placing ball bearings of different sizes and weights on the surface- depending on the size and weight of the ball bearing, the surface will curve in different ways. It's kind of like that, only much more complicated;-) Kind of surprising they would use NURBS to model ships, that wouldn't be the way I'd go. -----Original Message----- From: wwi@wwi-models.org [mailto:wwi@wwi-models.org]On Behalf Of Ray Boorman Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 11:02 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: OT Ship Shtuff (Dreadnought site and Beatties report of the battle of Jutland) I know this is a little off topic, but I found a site that has the beginnings of a 3D HMS Dreadnought. Relates to buying OT shtuff Message-ID: <3.0.5.32.20010620000750.008fc6e0@spot.colorado.edu> Greetings All, I'll de-lurk from the archives on this one. I've sold over 400 items, many OT, via eBay over the past 2 years or so. The problem with shipping is that the Postal Service substantially jacked up the price on Priority Mail and changed the Rules back in January. Yes, by the book 1 pound via priority mail is $3.50, the CATCH is that for the USPS one pound is 13 ounces. If the parcel is below this threshold you may send it via first class mail in the US. To send a parcel via first class the item cannot be in the familiar (and free) red, white and blue USPS boxes, it must be in "plain" packaging. If you are a fraction of an ounce over the 13.00 limit, then your choices are Priority or the slower Parcel Post. My experience has been that it is quite difficult to put a light weight model in a sturdy, mostly crush proof box and keep the whole packet under the 13.00 ounce limit. I've essentially given up on trying to ship all but very small kits via first class mail. Overseas (i.e. outside of the US) mailings are a different issue. For me, as the seller, these usually require two trips, in a car, to the post office so that I can stand in line (queue) to get the box weighed and report the results to the buyer. If this is from a consignment sale (most of mine are) then my minimal take on an overseas sale is consumed fixing the postage. I've sold items to a number of subscribers on this list (and perhaps a few lurkers like myself). I hope that those concerned have had a good eBay experience and received their item in good condition. Certainly there are a lot of folks selling on eBay charging unconscionable amounts of money to mail simple items. I try and avoid these sellers, so far reasoning has failed to work. I agree that it is useful for sellers to post in the auction description what the postage charges will be. This is a bit more work to what can already be a somewhat labor intensive task. I try and charge reasonable rates for shipping and get the item there in good condition. I've also been burned on postage more times than I want to remember. My current impression is that the only people making any money on eBay are those owning the company's stock. I got the scan, and can describe what it depicts based on descriptions and drawings in the Woodman book. The Colt-Browning was belt fed, from the left, and so the rectangular feed in the picture's foreground is the ammunition going into the gun. It discharged on the right, and the usual practice was to wind the belt on a spool; I am sure that is what the smaller chute to starboard is for. I would expect there to be a spool and a small crank on the starboard cockpit wall for the pilot to take up the belt as he fired the gun. [Casirati Alberto] Could this be spring.operated, like it was for the Vickers armed Ni.17 ? Empty brass would be ejected into the slipstream on the starboard side. The gun was called the "potato digger" by the American Marines who used it during the Boxer Rebellion, as a lever swung out from under the muzzle with each round. For this reason there could be no obstruction below the gun that would impede the lever. Page 74 and 75 of the Woodman book illustrates the gun, and shows a French obseerver winding the belt.
