Also, at the moment I really don't have time to fully describe what I was going to suggest;-) In any case, one technique to keep in mind that woodworkers (and especially those that make handmade bamboo fly rods) use is what's called a shooting board or tapering jig. It is two parallels surfaces between which you can clamp the work piece, allowing you to use a plane (standard, low angle, or scraper) to make a perfectly straight edge, and by setting the work piece at an angle, creating a controlled taper. I've set up small versions of these, using an X-Acto blade as a scraper for modeling purposes. Speaking of that I've found that full #11 X-Acto blades flex under scraping more than I like. I always keep old blades, and I make all sorts of scrapers that are shorter (and therefore stiffer) and also create special shapes, just by grinding them while held in the knife on a bench grinder. The resulting 90 degree edge with a small burr is perfect for scraping. Just keep a glass of water handy to keep them cool, is the steel turns blue, throw the blade away and start over;-) -----Original Message----- From: wwi@wwi-models.org [mailto:wwi@wwi-models.org]On Behalf Of John_Impenna@hyperion.com Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 10:11 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Bamboo Thanks Lee! Ray, I sell a lot on eBay and I ask 5.00 for up to two kits, and a buck each after that. Priority mail with delivery confirmation is usually 4.95. If you call making a nickel on mailing making money.... Please don't forget that one usually takes a loss on most kits sold on eBay. A smart buyer will check out the current cost of the kit. And to my friends in Canada I always ship a gift under $5.00 regardless of the final bid cost :-) Tom S ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 21:25:16 -0700 From: Phil Bytheway To: "'wwi@wwi-models.org'" Subject: RE: Ebay sa;les and shipping prices. Priority is competing with overnight stuff (like FedEx/UPS/etc)... if you REALLY want your stuff in 2 days, stick with Priority... if not, ask about First Class, which is usually less than $2.00 US. Too many folks want instant gratification and can't wait for their stuff... fine, Priority is a good option for them. I can wait. I have run into at least one seller that won't do the First Class thing... MUST ship Priority... so I just budget my bids based upon the $4.00+ shipping fee. Priority is l lb $3.50, 2 lb $3.95... most single kits WAY less than the pound! This is just my opinion. phil -----Original Message----- From: Ray Boorman [mailto:Ray_Boorman@telus.net] Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 7:59 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Ebay sa;les and shipping prices. Last Thursday was holiday here, so we didn't work on Friday also (and I visited the dentist to extract my last two wisdom teeth - something I don't wish to my worst enemy) and yesterday I went to Rio de Janeiro to teach some new employees... and have tons of messages to read now :-))) I started the Revell Fokker D.VII this weekend. I'm proud of it and having much fun. Perhaps it will be finished in two or three weekends. Thanks to the puttying technique Michael Kendix taught me the seam lines disappeared (the only one which was not perfect was between fuselage and elevator), you'll see when I send the pictures. And I'll paint it in Berthold's markings. It will look very, very beautiful! But I am confused. The Colt-Browning machine gun, while it was used in WWI, is totally unsuited for a fuselage mounting owing to it's lever action. The French (and Russians) used this gun (reluctantly) as a free weapon. No doubt the French would have been delighted to pass it on to the export market, but I can find no evidence that the Italians were ever so victimized. Harry Woodman reports, in "Early Aircraft Armament", that Macchi-built Nieuports and Hanriots were equipped with some Colt VICKERS guns, and that these used the Alkan-Hamy interrupter gear. Vickers guns on SPADs and SVAs were equipped with the Birkigt interrupters. Pages 99-107 of the above-captioned book describes the Italian guns and mounts. Descriptions of the Colt-Browning begin on page 74. I can offer more information about the gun, but I'm sure we're not talking about the same weapon. Have you a picture? Trying to help...
