If ya'll haven't checked out the latest IPMS (USA) Journal, see Commander Perry's build article on the CSM Sopwith Swallow. One of the best build articles in the otherwise worthless (full of kero burners, tanks & cars) rag has to offer. Steve - I really learned a lot from the article. Particularly on joining resin to white metal, the cowl clean up and your paint mixing secrets. On the other hand, did anyone else notice CSM Eric get bashed in the last SAMI? I thought it was really unfair. The kit was the Halberstadt Cl.IV - a former Tom's Modelworks vac that Eric recast in resin. Eric freely admits this was one of the worst kits produced in resin or vac and is certainly sorry for ever putting out for release. Unfortunately, reviews like that cast a pall over all Eric's other wonderful subjects. Kind of got me PO'ed. - JG -----Original Message----- From: wwi@wwi-models.org [mailto:wwi@wwi-models.org]On Behalf Of Steven Perry Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2001 2:14 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Dispatch from the AEG Front Whilst in the midst of preparing for an offensive push on the AEG Nacelle front, the Commander received a request to to attack in a different direction from the Minister of Cyber Propoganda. Unlike certian inflexible generals, the Commander executed a textbook wheel and with great elan, charged. The battle was sucessful and the acount of the action is due to be chronicled in an upcoming Internet Modeler. With deadline met and flanks secure, the Commander has now turned his attentions to the Nacelles. The engines have been secured to the nacelle bottoms, This position is supported by the radiator/cowl front and surrounded by a network of tubular framework. The nacelle frame was scratched from bent rod and brass wire. As of this dispatch both the port and starboard nacelle salients are even. Exhausts and a few minor details are the remaining areas of resistance. The commander is forced to conduct fundraising activities in order to support the war and plans a final push to finish up the Nacelle front when he gets off work. sp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 20:02:56 -0400 From: "Allen H Besser" To: Subject: Re: OT PE Message-ID: <000f01c0f78a$0894f060$3de02a3f@compaq-computer> Thanks, when I typed in great models I got the usual few hundred hits. Sometimes skewers - but often they're a bear because when split they end up twisted and useless - which negates the benefit of them starting out about the right size. Usually I use chopsticks. I pack of disposable bamboo chopsticks would make 100 kits if the damned wife and kids didn't keep swiping them! Making struts is a piece of cake. Bamboo splits easily into long flat planks which can be worked down to just over the thickness of a stut and sanded flat, then split to the right fore-aft dimension. Cut into lengths about double the correct length for your strut and use a sanding block and Xacto knife to finish each strut - maintaining the excess length as a handle to allow staining and sealing and to make holding it easy. Trim to length, insert a wire pin in each and and you're done. I think the younger set has just become too much of the "instant gratification society". They have not learned the fine forgotten art of finding things for your self, or building something yourself instead of having every thing provided for you. It is kind of scarry. And in the proper scale also. I'm not sure who makes it, Classic Plane or CS & HP Resin as the handout I got from Volker is a bit confusing, but I ordered it anyway no matter who made it, Price DM 32.90. Candice, those two Fokkers certainly made me do a double-take; and Russ, I envy anyone who can whip together a Pfalz in a weekend and have it look so great. Takes me a weekend just to get the box open and the pieces laid out. And they're in the grown-up scales, too! Message-ID: <004b01c0f7aa$8b600280$9c885ad1@default> Just got in the door from Rhinebeck! Uh,.... the one I have is a star-strutter, approx. 1/72 scale with a plastic rudder and wheels. There is also a Berg D.I. These have recently been re-released by the 'Italian (?) co.' (whose name I don't have handy and I'm on my way to bed after a 7 hr drive.) and are currently available in the gift shop of the National Aviation Museum (of Canada).
