A scene related to the aircraft is always a good idea to show the aircraft in a more natural environnement than just putting it in a view case without any base. But also I can imagine well to build a big scale aircraft or just a big scale cockpit with a pilot in the seat if the scale is big enough to give the pilots face a good expression. ....if I only had time....only time... Congratulations are dueto two listmembers who pulled in some OT awards at the Squadron Scalefest in Dallas this weekend. John Huggins earned three OT awards. A first and third in 1/72 and a second (I think) in 1/48 biplanes. Brent Theobald earned two OT awards a third (I think) in 1/48 and a second in 1/72 (with his Albatros Cook-up project). I didn't catch the name of the fellow who won the 1/48 Biplane category with an exquisite Fokker Dr 1. I'm pretty sure John won his awards for two of his Dr.1s. Brent's 1/48 award was for his mailed fist Albatros DV. I know John and I did our best to fill the table with 1/72 entries. I brought four and I think he brought as many -- including a very nice looking Roden Gotha. Brent may have brought more than one 1/72, but I didn't ask him. There were 13 1/72 OT entries and four 1/48 OT entries. Still not enough to outnumber the total of 1/48 Messerwhatsits on the tables. In the ot area, my 6-year-old son won two first place awards for a couple of kerosene burners, one of which was shaped like an egg. I got to talk to Brent and Jim Pliml, one of our listmembers from Abilene. Jim said he and Paul Howard have been too busy with life to particpate in any OT projects or list banter. Jim said Paul has a new son! Congratulations Paul! I picked up a 1/48 AMT DH-4 for $18, but had a hard time finding the elusive Revell SE 5a. I picked up a box for this model marked as $4, but when I opened it up I saw it was stuffed with those 1/144 scale cereal box models. I let the vendor know before he let that collection get away. Just shows the hazzards of storing things in misslabled boxes. He also had a triple kit of the SE 5a, Fokker DVII and the SPAD XIII, which I bought, just to get the SE 5a. One other OT kit I purchased was a card model of a 1/400 Zeppelin. I thought I'd give it a try and see how it comes out. Make the next model better in at least one way and you will build your skills. Once you get the outsides looking good, you'll turn to detailing, it's a natural progression. By trying to improve each model, you'll have a series of small successes which translates into continued fun. If you get too ambitious, the project will bog down and cease to be fun. It went together well, no fit problems, very little putty. The PE interior fits perfectly. The decal sheet for the fuselage actually does fit as mentioned last month by some one whose name I have long ago forgotten. It is a bright little plane with it's yellow and black fuselage. It's for a customer so my collection has not grown. Next up will be an IM build and I think I will add some French to my collection with the Cannon SPAD. I do like that red fuselage. After that will be my second scratch build. While looking for something in my back issues of WW1 Aero, I found I had plans for a plane I've wanted for a long time. I will do a Build Page and for those who think I have any shred of sanity left, this model will confirm I do not. I do hope that those who are off today have a safe day and weather as beautiful as it is here in Central California. It has cooled off to a pleasant 94 degrees. Hey, it was 102 last week, so 94 is pleasant. Enjoy.
